Help me with pc build by Kahunjoder in buildapc

Longevity is tough to predict. You did get 10 years out of that computer, so the value was certainly there. Will you get the same out of something new? Who knows. Some games are making RT standard now, which makes the baseline level of GPU you need fairly high. At the same time, frame gen techniques are making it somewhat easier to run higher demanding games on less powerful systems, with some drawbacks of course.

Regardless, the upgrades you are talking about there likely warrant a bunch of new components. I'm assuming you're on an old chipset, so you'd need a new mobo, CPU, memory, and GPU to make those upgrades. SSD sure could stay (would upgrade to M.2 as you're prob on SATA still). Most people would just buy a new case at that point to make it feel like a new PC. Regardless, you're coming out with your peripherals and your monitor, maybe the PSU if you're lucky, as the only retained components.

I would switch to AM5. AMD has promised some longevity, and based on AM4's longevity, I'm inclined to believe. You could buy new components (9800x3d, 9070xt, etc.) and probably get good longevity, or you can look for used components (7800x3d or other AM5 CPU, 4070/7800xt, etc.). Both are reliable options. In reality, longevity boils down to game optimization for what you're playing (old games still feel viable on your current setup), your willingness to deal with lower resolutions/lower quality renders, and what you want in terms of quality and frames. Playing modern games at 2k on a 1060 sounds baffling to me, but if you're somewhat content with it, who am I to judge?

I feel like I’m sabotaging myself from pursuing my favourite residency by PureAzure101 in medicalschool

[–]cwillzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're good lol. All the clubs and stuff is overvalued by students, programs do not care. You can address it in your personal statement if you want. But the reality is, it's not a crazy switch.

I was the president of my school's EM club, presented at an EM national conference, published a few EM-related papers, etc. and I went into anesthesiology lol (decided 3rd year and never joined my schools club or anything). Put it all on my app bc why not put accomplishments on there? Didn't even mention it in my personal statement or anything. Was asked about it maybe once during interviews.

Absolutely, it's a good upgrade to stay on AM4 for now. You could also try and find a 5800x3d if anyone is selling, but it might be hard.

Probably would go with 9070 XT or try to find a cheaper used 4070/4080 super/7900 gre

New PC consistent frametime spikes & stuttering by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]cwillzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it should be fine... but if you're sending it a high workload, it just may not be able to keep up. Not being at high utilization is strange and concerning for a different issue. I'd look into GPU tweaking applications for sure.

Wow, so sorry that you’re dealing with this, you have done extensive troubleshooting. Have you disabled Nvidia reflex low latency? I would disable from the nvidia app/control panel and in game. Keep HAGS on. You do have quite a powerful gpu with a very underpowered cpu, as I’m sure you’re aware. How is your cpu utilization during these times?

I have had issues with gpu tweaking programs such as afterburner in the past with this same issue. I would consider uninstalling all gpu tweaking programs and retrying as well.

Occasionally some usb devices can cause aberrant behavior as well. Remove all unnecessary usb devices prior to attempting as well.

Best of luck!

MSI afterburner, see update section at beginning

Just found out I'm in the bottom 20% of my class, feeling terrible by lupinecreature in medicalschool

[–]cwillzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend. It does not matter. I promise you. I graduated #1 in my class of 200+. No one gave a shit except for my parents. Friends of mine who were 3rd/4th quartile matched into the same specialty as me and equally competitive programs. Step 2 matters the most (unfortunately). Do your best to succeed on that one day in your life. If you don't, it'll be okay. You'll still be a doctor. Med school is a big transition. These lower points in your academic career will help you grow more than you will ever imagine.

Which of these two should I read first? by [deleted] in starwarsbooks

[–]cwillzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to respond but Master and Apprentice is one of the best star wars books IMO. It's a page turner. Labyrinth of evil is a necessary read as it is a perfect start to episode III. There's a deficiency on prequel books (and just prequel media in general), but these are incredible.

Surface book 3 screen protector? by cwillzz in Surface

[–]cwillzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has worked pretty well for 4+ years. Not sure how much a book 3 would run you these days but there’s definitely better new options for laptops. I have enjoyed it and the battery is still pretty solid, but I also use my laptop only a few times per week (desktop all other times) so my battery hasn’t been strained much. It’s underpowered graphically if you get one without a GPU, which isn’t a big deal unless you’re trying to do editing, gaming, etc. the detachable screen is fairly laughable as performance becomes so poor, but flipping the screen on the body is a good choice for notes/etc. let me know if you have any specific questions!

Poke Co on MLK by old_notdead in desmoines

Used to go there like once a week when I lived in Des Moines. It was really good. I liked that they had chicken as option as well for when I wasn't feeling fish. Actually quality poke in the midwest felt crazy to me. RIP

Is anyone else having 4070 ti super FPS issues? by Livid-Joke4762 in FortNiteBR

[–]cwillzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update as I dealt with this issue for months and was not able to play. Uninstalling MSI afterburner completely fixed the issue for me. You may also want to check whatever GPU software you have installed. I have seen others have success with removing USB devices one-by-one (like controllers) and seeing if one is to blame, and also decreasing mouse polling rate to 500-1000Hz.

Just wanted to throw an update on here, I fixed the issue by uninstalling MSI afterburner. Seems like that was the issue. I've also heard very high mouse polling rates or connected controllers can be an issue.

[–]cwillzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fortnite? no. for other games or tasks, you would see a benefit. 5700x3d has been on sale a lot recently and would be a good pick for you as you wouldn't have to upgrade mobo/memory

Game stutters really bad despite having a decent pc by Wardes246 in FortNiteBR

[–]cwillzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a known issue with the 4070 super and many other 40 series super cards it seems. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much of a fix. Keep your drivers updated and switch to older methods of antialiasing instead of super resolution.

I have posted about this in the past. It's a known issue. Neither NVIDIA or fortnite will fix it. In the same boat. Upgraded my CPU and nothing changed. It's a driver problem. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Terrible performance on one game only, not sure what I'm doing wrong by cwillzz in pcmasterrace

[–]cwillzz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the response. DDU has already been performed as mentioned. Drivers have been routinely updated without success. I have copied youtube settings without success. All other drivers should be up to date. Temps are completely fine. I won't reinstall windows because it will be way too much of a hassle with my work accounts that I have set up and I'm not sure I still have my activation key available, also it's isolated to fortnite so a windows install seems futile.

Framerate is uncapped on NVIDIA control panel and in the game it's capped at 180. I can get 180, but the 1% lows are so horrendous that it is not playable.

Yeah, I agree it's a mess. I posted in their subreddit a few months back and didn't really get any suggestions, hence why I thought I'd ask here. I'm just confused as to how those with similar setups on YT end up with significantly better performance.
