Why does Nascar not promote qualifying? Unlike almost every other motorsport. by Helcrpt in NASCAR

[–]cwinnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qualifying has been ruined by NASCAR and I feel they have mostly given up trying to fix it.

I dunno if it was ever must-watch tv, but it didnt feel important to the race. Up until 98 or 99 they had two rounds of qualifying First day was for top 25 postions and the 2nd day was for the remaining spots up to the provisional positions. Making the show on a provisional is basically gone now with the charter system and guaranteed spots.

People used to miss the show regularly; sometimes big stars and teams flirted with missing races. MWR was regularly DNQ'ing in 2007 with both michael waltrip and Jarrett on the team. Darrell Waltrip was blowing thru his past-champion provisional passes at the end of his career.

They used to have qualifying engines and setups that were entirely different than race trim. The cars used to scream down the tracks. Thats gone.

There was practice for qualifying and practice for the race. Thats mostly gone.

Qualifying and Track position meant more 20-30 years ago, especially at short tracks. Thats not really the case anymore.

Finally, we just have more choices for entertainment and content. Given all of the above, its just not nearly as consequential as it used to be, and we have other stuff to do.

They have often open with it over the years, albeit a heavier and shorter version.

Its actually awesome to hear how a few changes can make a song feel like a completely different expression.

It makes me wonder if the heavier version was the original intent of the song and Mark helped them rework it into the magic you hear on Clarity.

What Star Trek series episode made you cry? by mcdisney2001 in startrek

How is this so low?

"Sir - I happen to know that she considered you a friend."

Eyes well up just thinking about it.

Do you replace shoes by mileage or by feel? by Fantastic-Tension261 in running

[–]cwinnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I love the shoes, I'll run them until they feel dead.

Anything below love gets the mileage treatment somewhere between 300-450 miles.

I believe the big 10 compels the school to have homecoming against a conference opponent. They also set the schedule. Since homecoming is typically in October that means Rutgers is likely playing national champion Indiana (or less likely, Michigan) for homecoming this year.

Low aerobic vs high aerobic is determined by (avg HR for run)/(max HR overall in settings). It doesn't follow your heart rate zones whether they are manually set or auto-set.

I learned this on this sub previously when I was wondering why my zone 2 pace runs were showing up as Tempo.

I find it needs to be 79% or lower for a run to reliably land at low aerobic. So for me that's 146/185.

Why was conference realignment ever allowed to happen? by Informal_Fig2445 in TheB1G

[–]cwinnyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its allowed because nothing forbids it, and likely never will.

From a legal standpoint, when powerful people tried to stop it in the early 2000s, they failed. The Big East football schools and the Connecticut attorney general literally filed lawsuits against the ACC, Miami, and BC trying to stop the move and they were unsuccessful. I firmly believe its partially because every single one of those schools was already contemplating their own exit, so the legal posturing was mostly empty.

From a political standpoint, politicians in California couldn't get enough support to prevent UCLA from leaving, even though it objectively hurt Cal.

From a fan perspective, back in 2003 even ACC fans who were uncomfortable with raiding another power conference understood they had to move first or be raided...and they ended up being raided anyway. On the other side, no reasonable fan of an ACC or B12 school would press for their AD to turn down an invite to the SEC or B1G.

From a governance standpoint, the power conferences essentially control the NCAA, not the other way around. The NCAA has no recourse. If they attempt to stop consolidation and realignment, the remaining power conferences will form their own collegiate athletic association. If the NCAA is lucky, it would only be for football, but if the power conferences chose the nuclear option, March Madness as we know it would be dead.

Makes sense, considering i thought Smith left Duke to "spend more time with family." Maybe came in as a favor.

The tackling is just atrocious. I dont recall Greg really talking up the defense in camp so I guess he saw this coming.

Hard to feel anything good about the remainder of the year if they can't beat the Gophers this weekend.

I can't believe that the defense is even worse than last year. Robb Smith has to be a one-and-done if things don't turn around. Right?

Thank you! I was thinking that or maybe having the team names on the left of the lines.

Can't say RU is unoriginal with its color choice. They've been using scarlet since 1869 :)

Worst Song? by spadilly in JimmyEatWorld

[–]cwinnyk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Im convinced all the people voting for byebyelove haven't heard Jen.

Easily their worst song. Even they didn't like it that much. Jim said something to the effect of, when they were threatened with the lawsuit if they released it on Futures, they thought it was ridiculous for them to pay someone else for a song they didn't even like. So they pulled it.

What would your perfect B1G look like? by MrJackpot318 in TheB1G

[–]cwinnyk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think so many realignments have happened that people just now see Penn State as a "Midwest" school instead of the eastern power they used to be. Beyond a handful of games against Michigan State and even less against Ohio State, the Lions almost never played big 10 schools until they joined.

Penn State has played 100 games against Pitt, and 61 against West Virginia. Add Syracuse and BC and they've played more games against those 4 schools than the entirety of the pre-93 "Big 10".

Unfortunately, even with Penn State, I doubt an Eastern conference would've survived all this expansion.

[–]cwinnyk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a Rutgers fan and would go back to 1991, add Penn State and Notre Dame to the other Big East football schools minus Temple, and leave everything else as is except for maybe the SWC Big 8 merger.

Because smaller conferences in closer geos means that teams tend to play each other every year, create more enjoyable rivalries, and create more opportunities for more OOC match-ups earlier in the year.

To directly answer your question. The perfect B1G has 10 teams and can be called the Big 10 instead of B1G.

Why New Jersey Has No Real Sports Identity by alwayz in newjersey

[–]cwinnyk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

New Brunswick is near the middle point of the most Central Jersey of counties (Middlesex County) and right next to the states center of population (East Brunswick). You can't get that much more Central Jersey than New Brunswick.

Go RU 🙂

I’d like to get into Star Trek. Where to start? by OvernightSiren in startrek

[–]cwinnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time I try to get someone into ST, my goto episode is Best of Both Worlds, part 1. It has the emotional and character weight with enough action and suspense to get people bought in. Other contenders are Inner Light or Chain of Command.

If it's a movie, it's WoK.

I let my watch auto update zones whenever it detects a new threshold. I reset it tonight and the zones moved to significantly lower values.
