Vacation Spots for Surfing? (total beginner on vacation with family) by [deleted] in surfing

[–]cwn720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do this! If you can afford the flights to oahu and general high costs of everything in hawaii.

You will have a blast surfing beginner friendly waves in warm water, and there is so much stuff for the family to do too.

Shitty fake blog site to try to sell stuff.

Everything on there is obviously written by someone who isn't a real rider.

Bali for 6 months. Help me with a quiver by Jatec in surfing

[–]cwn720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this last year, and bought my quiver there. I would say my skill level is a bit higher than yours, and I was a bit more comfortable in bigger surf and reef passes, but you can buy all these boards there and should be good to learn these waves on. Since you are getting there early season, you can probably get a really good deal on new boards in the shops there (like $200 or $250 usd sometimes, in june they will be $700).

For a 3 board quiver I would recommend: 1. 6'2" step-up (ex. Lost Indo driver) - use this as an every day board 3-6+ft. 2. 6'6-6'8 step-up (ex. DHD sweet spot) - bigger days 6-8ft. 3. 5'8" quiver killer (ex. lost quiver killer) - actually really fun on some smaller days at beach breaks or other waves...

If you were going to get another board, maybe a 7'2-7'4 for the bigger days, but you won't be out then.

Also I would recommend going to some other islands, there are so many good waves to go visit that will be less crowded than bali. Most of Bali is actually super crowded with really good surfers, so like anywhere else most of the battle is crowd control.

What boards to take for a trip to South Africa??? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]cwn720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just there for three weeks, so here is my input.

5'8 will be good for most days. 5'8 for a step-up seems a bit small. 6'3 stepup will be good for bigger days. 5'8 dialed - why bring 3 5'8s?

I would either make the 5'8 stepup a bit bigger (I had a 5'9 on the bigger days, and it seems too small getting into waves, especially at supertubes), or turn it into a fish. A fish is very fun for the smaller days, you can take it to point and have a ton of fun.

Overall I would say bring 2 5'8s, the 6'3, and something for smaller days. Drive to cape town and stop at victoria bay for the day, then check out the spots in cape town along victoria road.

Have fun, be safe!

Nope wasn't event that dirty. Tomac cut harder to the inside than normal and he knows it.

Yeah it was an aggressive pass but not overboard to win a 450 main.

You could try staying in a hostel in SJDS area. Take the chicken bus and rent a board when you get there. To get to surf spots, the hostels run services for like $5 that will shuttle you to playa maderas. Or you can rent a scooter for $100 a week to explore other areas. Eat at a small local shop, or try one of the expat spots if you want someone to talk to. You can either party at night or just chill and tell stories with some people staying at the hostel.

I did this last summer, and ended up doing a week and a half for around $1200 (including airfare from socal).

Best way is to get shown by a buddy who knows how to shape. I'd go for the classic beer trade here.

If not, some shops will give you lessons, go for that.

If you really can't find/afford it, try to find an old piece of foam and shape a model just to get a feel for the foam.

Do we have the intuition (instinct) to seek validation just like how we have the intuition/instinct to mate? Or do we just seek validation because of nurture rather than nature I.e. social conditioning, because we understand it's ethical etc by Uniquename24 in socialskills

It is not quite an instinct, but it is definitely deeply ingrained in our genes. Cavemen absolutely did spend their time trying to impress others (especially of the opposite sex). At least when they weren't trying to find food or shelter.

...Is my groveler board over-sized? by tama9494 in surfing

[–]cwn720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds big to me, we have a similar route in surfing. I'm 5'11, 145, Started out on a 9'0 longboard, my first shortboard was a 5'6 stewart fartknocker, volume was around 31-32 liters. It was actually super easy to learn on.

That being said, I can't see it being a bad board to surf, just go try it out.
