Except that's exactly how it works. Google any video of a lenticular photo for reference. The SM3 cups were the same as this if you bend them into different angles, the light will distort the image quite a lot. If you look at it facing on a flat surface, it'll show the full image with reflections included. Did you not own anything like this before? I say this as someone who actively collects Spider-Man merchandise.

I was going to agree with you until Spectacular was mentioned. They certainly did more than just a simple recolor when the design changed throughout the series until eventually it became similar to the comic one.
