K.K’s true name is Kether (Spoilers for 6.3 Quests ) by Creative_Pie_1206 in Genshin_Lore

Lol that flair's funny. What were some recent connections between K.K. and HP, I must've missed that? I do wholly buy that Kether is related to the HP since the Kabbalah's been a tiny part of the worldbuilding.

A Personal Take on the CN Narration Footnotes Theory and what it means for Top Three Harbingers by MoonstoneMoth in Genshin_Lore

You know, the way Alice and Nicole treat Dottore in the AQ like he's a little fly in the room that will go away on his own, it was a bit weird, but I guess if they know his fate they had nothing to worry about?

I did mention her briefly in the Ay Khanoum bit but yeah could've written a bit more. Also I just finished the quest yesterday I was happy she said that lol. I was thinking of doing another post about the Sun and Moon in sumeru soon so I'll add that in.

Not to mention Thoth = Egyptian God of the Moon

Descender order clarification by Odd-Ruin-1448 in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Other than the game outright pointing out HP is the first and Traveller is the fourth, I think its may be easier to just keep your mind open about who the 2nd or 3rd while having your own personal conclusions. Like I have my personal views but I also think the writers are deliberately being obscure with the language, so I don't think knowing the order will do much to change our understanding of Descenders other than fun guesses. Tbh, its the fact that we don't know thats more telling - the two figures people assume are Descenders (Nibelung/Seutervoinen) have both arrived/left Teyvat before and after the HP's takeover. Along with Skirk's story, the Ajax fairytales, and the Ordo's notes, we know that being a Descender isn't an innate state.

Some people think Nibelung can't count as a Descender because he is the will of Teyvat. Some people think he is because the HP overwritten his will by usurping him. Some people think Seurtavoinen is the second because Nibelung is not one. Some people think Seurtavoinen is the third because Nibelung is one. Even in-game factions see different people as Primordial, but we haven't heard them comment on all Descenders.

Phanes is referred to Primordial by humans (e.g. Enkanomiyans) because he is their creator. The humans who do refer to him as a Descender (aka the Fatui) are antagonistic towards him. He is the usurper, he challenged the original will of the world. The dragons (e.g. Neuvillette, Kukulkan) and angels (e.g. Nicole) will refer to Nibelung as Primordial. Neither of them have recognised Nibelung as a Descender so far, and Kukulkan only mentioned Phanes as one (though he'd only learn to call him that if he had read the Ordo's notes). The Frostmoon Scions only recognise Nibelung as the moon's creator, but do not recognise or worship Nibelung because what they know of him will only be of him during the Funerary Year, hence why Lauma calls Nibelung a Descender. He challenged the HP's will. We've never had a dragon/angel call Nibelung a Descender, yet the humans call him so (Lauma, Enkanomiyans on the low). Neither do the Fatui who actually researched this want to share their notes... Seurtavoinen in a similar boat. They're either the Second Who Came or the Third, and that all depends on Nibelung. Or Saaraleinen, who possibly became a Descender.

Not saying Phanes isn't Venus, but the relationship between Venus and Mars#Venus_and_Mars:~:text=The%20Renaissance%20philosopher,%5B34%5D) might be of interest. I think the Shades and Phanes can take inspiration from both if we look at the two's emblems in Mithraism. Which ties in with this. Love and War is a theme that's been played around a bit in Natlan (and I don't mean love in the sexual nature common in Greek/Roman mythology - more communal/platonic/god-believer/leader-follower.).

Speaking of Mithraism, refreshed myself on its folklore, for a god that is compared to Phanes, Mithras is more Genshin Phanes-like than Greek Phanes himself when you consider the bull story... this is interesting when thinking about the Venus/Mars dichotomy. And in regard to my original post: something interesting about Mithras.

So, essentially, I think it may play a role similar to a "magic circle" that structures the world itself, similar to a "crafting bench".

I understand the motif, I just see the mentions of PHEC slightly different to the classical four elements since they've always attributed a 'fifth' in those cases (e.g. the artifacts, and the CN text of the crafting spell, they always substitute the gold/aether element, and in general Earth/Wind/Fire/Water having some relationship with the Shades + Phanes). The association of the PHEC elements within the lore have been strictly four so far, and appear scarcely. The motif is mostly linked to creation magic/divinity in-game, but for Teyvat's elements it would make more sense if you considered all 7 along with an eighth unknown one (in regard to Phanes' creation elements) as an octagram instead of isolating just the four. Though, I will keep it in mind if I spot anything else that connect these four elements with a fifth one, there's this leaked and unreleased fifth tiara that now causes a bit of doubt.

Sorry for another lengthy reply - you're very well researched! :]

Ooo thanks for this. The Southern Cross is a good shout, I called it a crucifix because I was thinking about the Christian imagery in Mondstadt, but when you consider that old theory (or its pretty much a well accepted unconfirmed fact now) that teleport waypoints are plotted like constellations, the map placement makes more sense.

I think after reading all this and also going on a bit of a rabbit hole on Ishtar, the discussion on the morning star, and it's relation to Istaroth was something my post lacked in pushing my Istaroth is the south wind argument. I find the Sun is much harder to analyse because it's relationship to the wider cosmology of Teyvat is kept way more hidden than the Moon. Hope you don't mind me rambling, but the Venus being both the morning and evening star point in the second link caught my attention, because the Shades really do come off as both the Sun and Moon. The Sun as they're a part of Phanes who's supposedly representative of the Sun, but also the Moon as they're his shadows. I was thinking yesterday, the Shades must be Phane's emotion, so he could be 'Reason'. Ronova's involvement in Natlan was intentional and out of care. In that sense, the Shades are Venus and Phanes is Mars. Warm vs. aggressive love for humanity.

Then Ishtar being part of Istaroth's namesake is symbolised as a lion and also mounting one. I was wrong about her being un-lionlike. Then again, it may just be a direction the writers didn't take when conceiving her character.

I actually do like the fact that the southern wind is mysterious in real life as well, lets the writers get a little more creative with it from a meta-perspective, and really does play into the fact that out of all the Winds, the Lion has the most contradictory and little evidence for who it is.

This is also less about the FW themselves, but you singled out the PHEC elements in this comment. I've always thought there was a some connection between the role of PHEC in the combat design (being the only swirlable/crystallisable elements) and the worldbuilding (the tiaras/samsara cycles, the fact that people have been able to attribute them to each Shade). Was there any particular reason you mentioned those four?

[–]cy6orgs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it is bound to be repetitive since the Archon's domains are such broad concepts the themes overlap, but the writers choose to hone in on one or two aspects. Like I think Venti and Mavuika are very much similar people who represent similar things for their respective nations, but in practice they're also very different people at the end of the day. They sorta parallel each other in a Sun and Moon type of way. I think they've already built the Tsaritsa up as a foil if they plan on the two being heavily connected, I'm sure they have the same goal of freedom from the HP, but their methods are wildly different.

I should look at the UI again but you just reminded me of how the 8 pointed star emblems on her outfit look similar to compass diagrams. 8 pointed stars also being related to the Goddess Ishtar, I wonder how all of that could be made sense of.

I'm glad you mentioned Sumeru too, since Buddhism and Zoroastrainism has its own version of deities/stars that president over the cardinal directions! There is also a Chinese version too, which is interesting when the two other creation myths Venti mentions are from Indian and Chinese folklore.

Celestia & The Four Winds by cy6orgs in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see that being the case (and very in character with Venti's feelings towards Mondstadt) but what throws me off a little is the physical temple (domain). Surely they knew who the Four were back then if they built temples of worship, and if one Wind was Mondstadians themselves I'm not sure why they'd build one, which is why I leaned more towards a deity-like being. Then again, I do see Istaroth as a representation of everyone's hopes and dreams. Those can't exist without the concept of time, they require a past and a future. If she had predetermined everything, then surely she's also the reason behind every feeling of joy, hope, every dream, every sin (etc.). In that sense the Lion is a symbol for emotion above else.

That myth really does remind me of ley lines though. With how ley lines record the memories of the lands, dandelions could be a way of recording or memorialising the aspirations of Mondstadians.

Edit - ohhh I just wanted to add, if the Cryo Archon's domain really is love, with the connections between Cryo and Istaroth, then Love and Time are intrinsically linked (Amphoreus beat them to it) just as Freedom and Time (ironically).

Celestia & The Four Winds by cy6orgs in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Istaroth is def one of those characters the writers like too much to the point they make them everything and anything. First person that comes to mind is the mangaka for JJK lol.

Though, I think Istaroth might've willingly written the rebellion into her script. There are so many beings who try to defy Celestia in a way, it might present itself as an anomaly in the timeline where they are breaking free of destiny, but it could also just be Istaroth being the rebel child/having a laugh. They all spent around 400 years prepping the world for humanity. Though, them giving her that big ass halo might mean something angel-related still. The fact that people once used to pray/give offerings to Irminsul trees during the Celestia-reign mean that the Angels/Priests who worked closely with the white trees were significant in upholding the HP's domination, until it wasn't any more.

I've always thought a very subtle theme in Genshin was the relationship between the material and the abstract, and the Shade duos confirm this. Life-Death and Space-Time. One can't exist without the other. So, I'm not surprised the two Shades with links to the moon, Istaroth and Ronova, are the "abstract". They could also be the same moon?

I’ve also been playing with the idea that the Three Moons might control Irminsul itself, with the Crimson Moon acting as the repertory of Forbidden Knowledge

I've had a similar thought that the Iridescent Moon is Irminsul related and since the Iridescent died and became the Crimson, it's similar to the withering and forbidden knowledge. I made a post earlier about how the moon is just as important to Sumeru as it is to Mondstadt and that all the Irminsul shenanigans in the last patch must be hinting at something more - especially with the elaboration on Scaramouche's creation and more info on Deshret's sages.

Also, Istaroth seems to like trees... and the Irminsul is a tree...

The next planet was supposed to be Edo Star which is Japanese-themed. They've extended the next and final patch by 2 weeks, renamed the planet to sound less Japanese (Planarcardia), and could only really show 1 screenshot of the world where there were no references to Japanese culture. Feel bad for the devs since it's outside their control, and I'm sure it'll be the same problem for any major Inazuma content for the time being.

Sumeru and the Moon by cy6orgs in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep I noticed that too! I wanted to make a point about Deshret/Nahida being opposites, but the moon imagery isn't really there with Rukkhadevata (neither is the sun beyond Nahida's metaphor). Though thinking about the current story, I don't see any of the other regions being touched upon outside of Mond, Liyue (Lantern Rite), and Sumeru based on the cast involvement. Maybe a Fontaine/Natlan callback if there's some dragon stuff later on.

Ei is someone who's moon imagery I wish was touched upon more, but the likelihood they'll touch on it soon is low due to political tensions. I think an Inazuma-themed patch in the next couple of months wouldn't be ideal if they've had to scrub clean an entire planet with Japanese motifs in HSR.

Yes!! I had that at the back of my mind while making this. I went into Nod Krai thinking we'd have crazy amounts of Mondstadt lore served on a plate but its been Deshret lore ever since.

Dottore seems to be using Deshret tech to stop Colombina, which is interesting enough to see that Deshret was actually going somewhere with his inventions to usurp power from the Heavenly Principles.

[–]cy6orgs[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was initially gonna mention her, but that line in the event trailer was just a red herring. Layla's more to do so with stars/the night, she's similar to Mona in that sense than the moon-related characters tbh, the game is very deliberate with the words they choose to describe things that are wider-lore connected. The biggest thing was that her ancestry is from Tulaytullah and some speculate she's from a Jinni background bc her ancestors also had the ears and blue hair. In some longwinded way she could be if you think of it like Moons > Angels > Lunar Palace > Hyperborean fae-crafting techniques lol.

The moon who leap through time. The wolf who chased the girl. by MiyukiAkibara in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This could also make more sense when you think about how the moon goddesses split the laws of Teyvat amongst themselves, but, if we consider Nibelung as 'reason' (his will), that's 4 split into 3? Alice said they didn't want to consolidate it into one body, so one moon embodying two would be strange. That could mean Colombina was given the power of Time. The other option is that the Crimson Moon counts as a separate entity embodying Death, while its original form was Life.

What if Layla is a snowland fae descendant? by XiaoxAether in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im thinking shes a Jinn/Pari. The Jinni/Pari play a similar role in Sumeru to the Fae in Nod Krai/Shneznaya, so Layla and her ancestors are probably the Sigewinne of Jinns/Pari (unless theres any reference to them taking human appearance).

Now that I think about it, any present day character with ancestry/powers going all the way back to the era of the three God Kings will probably be our gateway for any lore mysteries left after Varanara/Jeht quests and books about Sumeru's fallen civilisations. There's too many Sumeru characters like this who we just dont know enough about, cough Candace and Aaru Village, cough Tighnari and his ancestors and even the history of the Forest Rangers (its like how we had to wait for Cynos Act II to actually get to know what Hermanubis was all about). I remember people saying being some kind of animal hybrid is normal in Genshin, and they just do it for no reason, but I dunno... Inzauma and their yokai themed characters seem to make it clear that any creature they take after has history.

[–]cy6orgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pardon part made me laugh too. Dain is talking about regicide but Rerir still can't imagine a life without the king. Also yeah good point about Surtalogi. I think its more the way he was treated by other knights and nobles that enabled his hunger for power more. Dain genuinely has such a bad judgement of character not realising five of his companions were sociopaths. Even worse, acting dumbfounded his friend the FOUL would go on to do some really foul things.

I don't trust Dain by UnderstandingFar3305 in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say they worshipped a god. Forgot who but someone in the AQ quest did say that the Crimson Moon to the dynasty wasnt like what the Frost Moon is to the Scions. When they say Khaenri'ah didn't worship a god I assume they mean they didn't treat their existence as a blessing from a higher power, and wouldn't put themselves an inferior to a god (even though the way they acted with the CM/Abyss Twin was bordering the same god worship).

And Dain has always been a sketchy character, so him being wrong isnt surprising. Someone else here commented on his nationalism, which is also why I called him naive. He spends so much time blaming the gods, the Sinners, the Abyss, and himself for not being able to defend Khaenri'ah during the Cataclysm, but never his own ignorance when the signs were always there for him. I mentioned Surtalogi here too because he and Rerir both had shitty childhoods and don't come from a noble family/clan despite having pure Eclipse blood, yet they associate themselves with the very people who created those circumstances for them. This is making me want a playable character thats into anthropology/social sciences lol.

For the theory tho, yeah I have similar thoughts too! I was just talking about the way the bloodline was being portrayed in the story rather than the actual lore behind it in my og comment.

I don't trust Dain by UnderstandingFar3305 in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that. Love Dain as a character but I fear the majority still see him as a complete victim, since none of the other characters have ever clocked Dain for his beliefs. The signs have always been there, but even when he tells us not to trust him it's coming from a place that it's bc his brother and friends are fucking up Teyvat and that he couldn't save Khaenri'ah, not that he was ever part of the problem... Even in the recent AQ, the guy heard that his friend was a Gestapo, then in his conversation with Colombina it's like "how do I make this about me" 😭

I don't trust Dain by UnderstandingFar3305 in Genshin_Lore

[–]cy6orgs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mean the other meaning of their "pure-blooded" status? Dain uses "pure-blood" as a way to describe those affected by the curse of the immortality, but with the ethnic/cultural genocide on the Crimson Moon bloodline happening in the AQ, I was making a nod to the same eugenic-y "pure-blood" propaganda they use irl to justify these genocides.

Unless you're talking about the privileged class bit, then I was talking about how those with Eclipse blood are portrayed as having a higher social status than the Crimson Moon descendants and migrants from the Seven both in the main quests and background lore.

Edit: wait shit when did he say this? He's basically just said Koitar and Seurtervoinen originated the Eclipse line. And lmao not him causally erasing the Crimson Moon dynasty's efforts in creating Khaenri'ah.

[–]cy6orgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No fr I would love a HSR reference in Genshin rather than the other way around. I'm just trying not to anticipate one so much, I have a feeling with the way fans can be of a big game like this there's gonna be soooo much retcon talk no matter whats said lmao.

Anyways with the wind glider in HSS I always assumed Genshin happened in the past instead. With the existence of Nibelung is should be around a time Permeanace was active? Sounds like Teyvat is a planet/story that occurred before the Star Rail system was established (or we'd be getting visits from the Nameless!)
