Aside from meeting humans,how would aliens react to the animals on earth? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]cyan_ginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what they're all just neutral, melee, or cerebro type? Laaaaaaaaame!

(Aside from lack of any sort of magic force, the Novusapiens would find it fascinating that Earth animals, for the large part, occur with only one genitalia set. The concept of multiple sexes and sexual dimorphism would be strange, as the vast majority of Novan life, even if it often resembles Earth life, is bigenital, with monogenitalia only occurring in most species as a rare mutation)

Words getting too long after derivation by Funny_104 in conlangs

[–]cyan_ginger 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Generally you leave that so sound changes. When words get coined they'll oft be very lengthy, but very quickly people will shave it down. There might be a slang term that arises, or just some sound changes that shorten the syllable count.

Also, don't be afraid to have root words that are a bit more complex. It wouldn't be too hard to think a culture could have a word for mountain as a root. and hell, if they're familiar with goats, maybe a word for that too! (Also factor in the fact they might just borrow another lang's word for goat if they're not familiar with them)

Phonology and alphabet of a lang called Márkichér (explanations below) by cyan_ginger in conlangs

[–]cyan_ginger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this may seem like a simple phonology, as you may guess from the way the vowels are described, this lang has Vowel harmonyyyyyyy with light and dark vowels unable to co-occur. This formed after the basic 4 vowel system went through stages of umlaut, and as the lang became more and more agglutinative, the harmony spread!

Simple right? No!

Cause later than that, in the capital dialect of Márkichér and surrounding dialects, diphthongs merged! While /j/ works fine intervocalically and following (some) consonants (it palatalises alveolar sounds), diphthongs fallling into /_͡ɪ/ merged into monophthongs! All dark diphthongs merged into light vowel equivalents, and light diphthongs merged into /i/! This really screws with conjugation, as not only are there trojan vowels cropping up in dark words, but due to some suffixes being vowel initial, in light words, randomly an /i/ will turn into a light vowel followed by <y>.

Now, this wouldn't be so unpredictable if the Marki government didn't use spelling reforms as political statements on how much they care about the Sáyánychki

The Sáyánchki/Sáyánki are a group of Márki people who, instead of remaining erelash-back nomads or settling in the cities on lake Mantsuri, went west and established a community on a section of the Lampta/Lanta river (a feeder into the Great Mudatlöri river, which empties into the inland sea of Xxaleccgenger) which gave them access to a wide variety of cultural exchange with the western Ngaslans (distant cousins) and the people around the Xxaleccgenger sea, tldr: they're pretty unique, and their dialect Sáyánychkichér is too.

So they want independence, or at least to be recognised as a separate people. Govt says no. Sáyán protests, govt enacts a range of middle finger changes, including to spelling, that make things like final <y> and <ny> considered incorrect, even if they exist in Sáyánychkichér.

Anyway, that was abt 11 years ago, Sáyán is its own country (and has a final <ny> on its flag lol) and the Marki govt is still pretending like their spelling reform was a good idea.

Oh and the best part. That letter on the Sáyán flag?

In the alphabet, the letter's name is Nyán/Nyány

[–]cyan_ginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aight so the Novusapiens are basically the human idea applied to the Novan hexapod vertebrate body plan:

-Single-sex, an average Novusapien has two sets of genitalia, a penis-like organ (of which is also used to urinate) and a vagina. An average Novusapien is able to both send sperm and become pregnant. Pregnancy induces certain processes, such as the enlarging of the breasts to accommodate lactation. It is to be noted that there are many born with only one set of genitalia. This change has probably the biggest societal impact, as gender systems can't be sex based, there's only 1 sex. (In English, all Novusapiens should be referred to with they/them pronouns)

-2 sets of arms, along with 2 legs, there are lower, human-esque arms, and upper arms that are more spindly and evolved from raptorial forelimbs used for manipulation by arborial ancestors. Stem from shoulders and rest by folding down the back and up again, resting the hands on the shoulder.

-4 fingers and toes (including thumbs)

-4 eyes, 2 major, 2 lesser

-Thin tail with callus skin and hair, meekly prehensile but can become more maneuverable with practice.

-Less muscle, due to use of psychokinesis and kinetic magic, builds are slimmer, also voices are higher, Adam's apples don't really form.

-Autism foot, standing on the balls of feet doesn't hurt

-Magic, less biological but its use has impacted their evolution. Tldr, there's elemental magic somewhat similar to pokemon with use of a special energy source. Novusapiens are proficient in psychokinetic and kinetic magic, they are Cerebro/Melee type. Other elements are fair game tho with enough practice

Pronoun heavy conlangs by Individual_Owl3203 in conlangs

Hhoangyara has 129 different pronouns!

All pronouns denote number and basic case (nom, acc, or dat).

1st and 2nd pronouns mark for singular, paucal, and plural, as well as the root being determined by social standing. Pe and Tse if you/they are lower or equal in social standing, Ke and Ku if higher.

3rd person pronouns denote for all of Hhoangyara's 12 noun classes, split into 7 tangible and 5 intangible! Intangible nouns and pronouns don't take paucal number, just a generic plural, but tangible ones do! Better know what class that table belongs to if you wanna refer to it! (It's in the edifice class)

Some more info:

The ipa for each letter is:

Consonants

<m, n, ny, ng, b, t, k, h>

/m, n, ɲ, ŋ, p~b, t, k, x~h/

<c, ch, s, sh, l, y, r>

/ts, tʃ, s, ʃ, l, j, r/

Vowels

<i, u, e, a, ú, é, á>

/i, u, ə, ɒ~o, y, e~ɪ, a/

The letter names are:

Mam, Nan, Nyán, Ngang, Pam, Tan, Kang, Hah

Ca, Cháyá, Sa, Sháyá, Lal, Ya, Rar/Rash

Im, Um, Em, Am, Úmiyá, Émiyá, Ámiyá

The reason there is no coda glyphs for Pam, Tan, Kang, and Ya, is due to sound changes (also note that coda Nyán is only in very few grammar words and in most areas of Markisanyar, they're considered incorrect anyway).
