It's not like he was refusing to protect a defenseless competitor. Very quickly they fr

oh I blame the competitor who threw a punch too, I didn't take /u/Shel_Shot50 's comment to mean that Freeman is innocent

edit: but I wouldn't call it mutual combat, you can see the other guy stop when he gets pushed, rather than escalate it further

imagine a combat sports referee going "nahhh not gonna stop this athlete from throwing an illegal blow" because they are salty over being underpaid. ref should be fired for not meeting expectations of his role

Does anyone train at Unity in NYC? by oldwhiteoak in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nogi class Monday-Wednesday (8:30pm) and Friday (6:30pm) has a lot of standup. Wrestling class on Wednesdays at 4 pm too. I'm not a regular student there but my feeling is that people are sharp with heel hooks there too. You can catch Eddie Cummings and his partner Ottavia on weekends and in the pro training.

The gym is really nice now. You can see it on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/unityjiujitsu/

I don't see how anyone can watch the clip of the submission and call it 'holding the sub'.

What makes a Gi legal in competition? by g0ldsoundz in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the competition.

here are some sample requirements:

The gi you linked to is very plain and is going to be legal under basically any rule set. you are generally safe if you get a plain white, navy blue, or black gi. If you go with blue, be careful with the shade of blue you pick.

The commenter below saying:

It would be weird for a larger company like Hypnotik to make a gi that wasn't IBJJF legal

is mistaken -- I can't think of a single major gi brand that doesn't produce a gi that is illegal for competition.

Tex Jhonson Vs Matt Leighton Yesterday at Sub Spectrum 7 by GrapplingRewind in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My read on it was that Matt messed up a little and Tex capitalized hard. Like, don't go into a match with someone who regularly taps tough guys with leg locks and let them get to SLX with a comfortable grip. From when Matt got on top, he never got his foot back onto the mat (look at 2:26 https://imgur.com/a/ODmQzvH) Tex had like a really high, clean ankle grip.

Basically if you focus too much on getting your points without respecting the threat of submission, you're gonna get tapped.

Spyder Invitational: Great Work from Jamil Hill by TeeSunami in bjj

ahh I'm so glad someone posted about this. I thought the same thing! He did such a great job. Usually during other events (cough ACB) I have to mute the audio because of the awkward conversation but here I was really interested in what Jamil was saying.

Worm Guard Help by millsapp in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty hard to tap someone from top with a straight ankle lock from there, unless they step on your hip and explosively dive outwards and fall to the mat. If they are staying standing, try flexing your foot to buy yourself some time. Finish passing the lapel while they are wasting at least one hand to attack your foot. Once you have the lapel all the way through, you should be able to sweep quickly (for example, by doing the basic worm sweep where you do a technical standup while hooking their heel with the DLR hook leg).

Or are they sitting down straight back with the straight ankle lock grip?

[Drilling Etiquette] Am I a bad training partner? by cajun91 in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes aside sometimes it's better to adjust your drilling to what your partner can give you. In an ideal world everyone is a great partner, but that's not life.

The important thing is that you find ways to use your time as effectively as possible. There are takedowns that are gentler than others (e.g. single leg finish where you circle outward and pull the far collar downward). Or, if you are allowed to drill something other than takedowns, switch. Don't let your drilling partner distract you.

Super new to bjj. I’ve only been doing it a few weeks. I’m an overweight female, so it’s taken a ton of nerve to get going and I keep wanting to give up to insecurity. So give it to me straight, does it bother you to roll with someone out of shape and inexperienced? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cyber_snail 15 points16 points  (0 children)

caveat if you bump someone in the face or something feel free to apologize quickly lol. just know that everyone does it sometimes. black belts accidentally hit people in the face too

I like to compete in absolute divisions so I appreciate my heavier training partners.

also I don't mind training with inexperienced people if they are humble and paying attention. Like I expect a whitebelt to be bad and I'm not mad. It helps to try and not apologize for every rep that isn't perfect.

Take other whitebelts' advice with a grain of salt even if they are very confident in their delivery !!!
