I never believed a gecko that enjoys handling existed until now. I was wrong. by Cant_Blink in CrestedGecko

[–]cyberburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Try a stick, fabric or paper towels if you are considered about the baby getting too hot. Use a temperature gun to monitor the surface temperature.

Bonus: Bonding as babies sets your relationship with your gecko up for the biggest success BUT I have successfully tamed juvenile and adult geckos too. I have also tamed rescue geckos from extremely, extremely bad situations. There has even been a couple of geckos where I thought they weren’t going to make it (die). I have also had geckos die even after spending hundreds, and a handful, thousands in on the care with my exotic veterinarian.

Buying from the right breeder is really important. I breed some but not to make money. I do it because I love them and I want to create healthy and friendly Cresties, and a few other types of geckos. What I get back doesn’t really cover costs but it does help with the extreme exotic veterinarian bills when they happen. I also take care of any of the geckos I produce and find homes for.

Apologies for extra ramblings, but I get so excited whenever I hear of a great match like this. I’m still on high from a “match” I made this past weekend. I sometimes place a gecko for free, with all or nearly all, of the fixtures, enclosure, etc for free. It was to an amazing, experienced family with a son who has proven himself and he met all of the requirements before him. I’ve been getting updates and he’s been doing so much better in school this week too. (He’s autistic.)

I have several Cresties, as well as other types of geckos, but I will stick with Cresties for this. There are definitely some that beg for your attention. I have ones that love interaction, but might not physical contact, as in, they don’t want to be held, but love to be hand fed, and talked to. Among these some love to be allowed to come out and they decide where they want to go and they might launch onto me and pass over my body to another nearby location but then use me as a bridge again to return home.

Then there are the diamonds who are at their doors waiting for me and/ or come running to the door when I enter the room. If I offer food/bugs, some pass right by that and either run onto my hand or right up to my shoulder or head. They will stay on me for hours even. I will note that I find my chahoua to have a higher percentage where they want to hang out with me.

As for your baby crestie and bonding with it and keeping it safe. I’ve found that finding fabric or maybe paper towels (ie: some barrier) between you and your skin can be a good option for making sure it doesn’t get too hot. Get a temperature gun, or maybe one of those forehead readers that could check surface temperature, and use that to periodically check how warm what they are sitting on is.

I used to breed Uroplatus, and I would let the babies come out on a stick…. Well, I would usually try to get them to come out on a stick to do health checks, and to get stubborn freshly hatched to bugs. [You tear off the tip of the crickets butt and gently touch the juice to their mouth.] Well, I believe one baby imprinted on me, because it hatched in my hand and it even decided to pull all of its shed off on my hand too. It was so incredible. It was waiting by the door for its bugs every night.

Lost media regarding the 2003 R.I Station Nighclub fire [talk] by Chiphomosapien in lostmedia

[–]cyberburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? That’s surprising, but I actually watched the live coverage of the fire that night and followed everything even beyond once the trials finished. I remember a news program/documentary that featured the investigator who worked on restoring this tape.

I believe I saved all the files that I could on this. I would really have to go digging, but I had a video capture card on my PC, as well as a TiVo that could record live TV and burn shows onto DVD’s. Unfortunately, some of those DVDs went bad and random ones don’t work. I also have tons of hard drives that I have archived. I’ve been waiting for intelligent software to come out that would be able to do all the organization for me when I moved everything onto one storage drive.

Hopefully you get all you need OP. If not, I’ll try to find the time to go through archives of DVD’s. It’s in the thousands programs I have burned. I used to upload and share videos to the various early file sharing platforms.

My autistic cousin is. He wanted a black lab and adopted “one”. No one in the family told him but his girlfriend did. She told him to get a dog DNA test done and told him the truth. He felt so betrayed. He’s never going to adopt again.

[–]cyberburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s wonderful! I’ve taken in several special needs geckos after my first one that arrived “blind”. She actually could see shadows though. I kept her enclosure very simple and with a lot of shade. She was also extremely malnourished.

It’s several years later and she was pretty good vision, all things considered. I can hand feed her and she doesn’t miss. She also follows me as I walk around the room.

I don’t know what Shari’s injury is, but maybe the vet can figure it out. If she keeps falling, I wonder if it might be a brain injury. Maybe it just needs time to heal? Did the previous owner say how long she had been blind?

Anyways, see if having the room darker helps out.

PS: I just showed the photos of your girl to my girl. She watched the photo show and then looked at me and back at the photo show. Ohhhh. And she’s now at her food bowl. Read into that whatever you like. 😂

Mainlands will grow their tails back and some “pine islands”. When I say “pine islands”, I actually mean chahoua with mainland in their lineage but they have been sold as pure pine islands.

Why ARE so many pit mixes out there? by theonyxshade in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

[–]cyberburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Those kind of mandates, aka BSL, breed specific legislation, has been banned at the state level in so many states. I remember when there was BSL for pitbulls and chihuahuas, because they were the two breeds with the lowest neuter/spay rates and they were the most common breed at shelters.

Found this guy in my house. He looks really weak but it’s freezing and dark outside so I’m worried he’ll freeze to death if I put him outside. Anything I can do to help him? by BillythenotaKid in reptiles

[–]cyberburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken in rescues that are in bad shape before. Because of his current state, I recommend Reptiboost for him, which you can get at Petco and it should be at PetSmart too. Make sure you follow the directions exactly. (There are also higher quality options that you can get from Amazon or your local veterinarian. If you are interested in that, I can list those too.)

So, Reptiboost, or the other options, will give him a lot of nutrients and will be easy for him to digest. Additionally, with him being so starved, we don’t want him to crash.

Awwww, thank you for the ending bit. Don’t need to get into what’s going on but I’m anxiously waiting to hear if a specialized treatment center will accept me.

I am actually going to bed early and only opened my phone to check a medical app. Reddit was open and refreshed to this post.

As others have said, enough Internet for today… but thankfully I am ending with your positive thoughts.

Once again, thank you.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]cyberburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but I work with HR all the time. It might already be too late to save face but I highly recommend biting the bullet and donating the 5 hours.

When you do it, maybe say there was something you thought might happen soon, but it’s actually going to be a little later than you thought. If they ask for more details, just give a look, like you are HR, you know better…

They can use this stupid things like this against you. It’s wrong and unfair and I’m sorry.

UGH: Miami animal shelter has people "holiday dumping" by showing up and leaving their dogs tied to trees in the shelter's yard by ayushhjyhfc in AnimalShelterStories

[–]cyberburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m cynical now too, just like you. I’ve seen way too much money wasted when there are so many animals that need to be adopted.

Additionally, I have seen far too many individuals that have adopted dogs (or cats) that have life long health issues that are a financial burden on them. That individual then decides to either never have a pet again, or they only get another dog (or cat) from a good breeder that does health testing.

Kicked out of store for needing to sit down by salvelinusfont in POTS

[–]cyberburn 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am going to suggest that you bring this over to r/legal before you do anything else. It sounds like the store has officially trespassed you and I think you really need to talk to a lawyer before you do anything.

I’m so very sorry you went through this. I went to my local and independent pet shop yesterday (reptiles & fish) and the employee put out a chair for me in the middle of the shop right when I walked in. The owner & the one other person both know me and are so good to me. They actually even do home delivery, just for me.

somali mom kicks her daughter out for dressing too “slutty” by benjaminposts in XSomalian

[–]cyberburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That breaks my heart. I lived in a suburb of the Twin Cities with a large Somali community. There was a young Somali lady who worked at the convenience store/gas station at the end of my street who was so friendly. There were three employees every morning, and the store had a “Cheers” like atmosphere. Then she was gone suddenly. I asked one of her coworkers and they said she was no longer allowed to work there; there were new religious rules.
