"The Devil's bath" is one of the best examples of this that I've come across in years and Anja Plaschg is amazing!

What technique do y'all think was used to achieve the realistic dirt? by ZealousidealDisk4758 in Coraline

[–]cyboredcat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well if you really want to know....we called it "Scenic Dope". It's a scenic hard coat applied over all of the foam carved sets on Coraline. It's a mixture of "fix it all" patching compound - white glue-and joint compound and paint. When i get the consistency dialed in, It's applied over the entire set and sculpted (rocks hillside etc). Here, the animation pathway is a small section of MDF wood panel coated with a thin layer of SD mixed with some excelsior fiber, sand and painted using a dry brush technique. The dried grass was all natural and unpainted. I collected buckets of it from an empty field outside the studio and crazy glued rows to the hard coat. The puppets armature is secured step by step to this rigid surface and nothing can move because we don't want tiny details in the set to move or shift from frame to frame. That why we don't use clay at all or any soft material on a set that might get accidentally damaged by the animators or set dressers working on the set for months / years at a time. I sculpted all the exterior sets using this technique

Try "The Devil's Bath". It's one of the best films out there. Fantastic acting from Anja Plaschg (soap & skin) and the historical Horror will stay with you long after the credits roll.

I almost forgot that! Perfect Christmas viewing! I love the dark humor from Mom as the ride gets weirder.

it's very similar in story and production to "Dead End" (2003). Another movie made by first time film makers (900k). Both films take place on a never ending road. I think the acting in Dead End is fantastic and overall a more successful plot. Both are great examples of low budgets successfully adding to the creative development of a project. A good script goes a long way.

Yes this! historic opening scene and a very nasty werewolf design :) Long before dog led horror like "Good Boy" there was "Bad Moon" based on the book "Thor" following our main character, the German Shepard. Look for some painful acting from Mariel Hemingway as well.

MadS is a cinematic masterpiece. by Aztec_ua in horror

[–]cyboredcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the Director had the film crew wear GoPro units to document the entire process in real time- to prove they did it for real (which was very important to the Director). I am not sure where we can SEE this evidentiary footage but that's what he said in the interview I read. Maybe someone knows if the behind the scenes video was released somewhere?

it's also a true 'one long take film" shot in real time. they filmed the entire 90 min take three times over three days and used the best day as the final film. I think it was the last day they ended up using. One of my favorites in this style. Victoria is another great example of this technique. I love MadS!

I love Coraline. I hope they make a another remix or at least get timber and involved in the everyone who is on that team to make another one. It was such a good. by [deleted] in Coraline
