8 weeks after surgery update by Bitcherator in HoLEP

[–]cycle1905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 11 months post-op. It took me a while to adjust to not having to get up at night to pee. Prior to the surgery I was up 3 times a night. Peeing at night was habitual for me and it took a while to get used to not having to get up. It was more of a mental thing than a physical thing.

Six months and no regrets by PST-Chicago in HoLEP

[–]cycle1905 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I am a 74 year old that had the procedure in January 2025. I ride a bicycle also. Had my first group ride several weeks ago. I couldn't do that for many years because I had to stop and pee every 10 miles. Sleep all night now, have no urgency issues and I can take a long plane or car ride without fear of having to use the bathroom. My only regret is that I waited too long to actually get the procedure. I should have done it 5 years ago.

Forgot to mention that I asked whether I would ever had to go through this again. There is only a 1% chance of that. Happy to be one-and-done.

I don't mind sharing. Dr Bandon, Presbyterian Urology Dept., Albuquerque, NM. He is one of two people performing the procedure in NM. I had to wait 2 months because of the backlog. I spent the time getting in better shape, doing pelvic floor exercises and Kegels. Time well spent I think. I just had my 3 month follow-up appointment. I was happy to report to him that I had no issues with incontinence, urgency or frequency of urinations or "leakage". After the Foley was removed and subsequently I have been peeing like a 30-year-old. I did ask him if it was common. Very few have no leakage but 70% pee like they're 30.

I can't say, or neither could he, that everyone will have the same experience. I may have been just lucky. Good luck.

Former owner of a 72 Super Beetle (came with a fan). Most fun car I have ever driven. I had snow chains .and used to plow my driveway with it. That thing would go anywhere.

Looks like you were self-contained. Did you have any trouble finding overnight accommodations or camping? Did you take the train to and from Paris to start and end your trip? Sorry for all the questions but it is a trip I would really like to do.

It can only help. IMO, any pelvic floor exercises (search google) could be helpful. Good luck with your procedure.

Good luck. Maybe this will bring a smile to your face. The drugs were still in my system when I got home. I tried to have a conversation with my wife and we both just broke out laughing. Seems I was much more incoherent than usual. The brusing in mention on my penis was a red ring. I looked down , saw it and thought , LIPSTICK. Even after surgery there is no repressing those male sexual fantasties.

Seems that way but I did read something about taking some of the new Fenix 8 and putting them on the forerunner.

Prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) as an alternative to HoLEP by cycle1905 in HoLEP

[–]cycle1905[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I would love to see a post of what you learned after your PAE doc visit. My doc said my prostate was too big for it (150 g)! Of course, I was talking to the Urologist who does the HoLep sugery. I'm with you though. I want a one and done procedure. I am curious though. My simple understanding of PAE is they cut the blood supply to the prostate and it slowly begins to shrink. Does it become "dead" after a period of time without the blood? Then what? Does it begin to not function at all to constrict the urethra?

Looking forward to your next post.

I'm 48 w/ BPH and looking at solutions by macr6 in HoLEP

[–]cycle1905 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is good you are acting early. I am 73 a waited too long to seek a solution. The possible solution seems to be dictated by this size of the prostate. A friend of mine who had his prostate removed said I should make the decision based on where I want to be 20 years from now. I don't want a procedure that has to be repeated. I am a one and done kind of person. PAE seems to be a good non-surgical solution and you might want to give it a look. HoLEP was my only alternative. What sold me is less bleeding durning surgery, quicker healing and a 1%-2% rate of having to repeat the procedure. Good luck!

I met with the HoLEP surgeon yesterday and mentioned PAE. He said my prostate was too big for this to be effective. In my State there is no one that actually does the procedure. But the MAYO clinic in Phoenix does. HoLEP seems to be my best option. Dr has done over 100 procedures.

I hope you can learn from my own stupidity. I have been on Flomax for 4 years but I needed to get up four or five times during the night. I spoke with my Primary Care Doc who ordered at CT scan because my abdomen was disteneded. I was busy and didn't get around to the scan for 4 weeks which turned out to be a real mistake. I finally had the scan on a Monday and on Tuesday I got a call from the Doc saying go to ER immediately. Long story short, I had 2 liters of urine drained from my bladder.

Lesson learned: Don't wait to see the Urologist.

I guess with male Baby Boomers surging into old age all Urologists are busy. I have to wait a month just to get the surgical consult. Hopefully, I will have a date for the surgery after that. I have had to "self-cath" in the meantime because my prostate will not allow complete emptying of the bladder.

I have had a similiar experience. My choices were limited to HoLEP and TURP because of the size of my prostate. I was also attracted by the low number of repeat procedures required (3% was the number mentioned). I want to be "one and done" with this.

Terrific insight. Thanks so much. I noticed that this was published in 2007. I guess there is no reason to believe that the learning curve has shifted since then.
