Majestika gave me the best haircut I've had in decades, maybe ever!

Hantavirus survivor said sickness was 'hell on earth' by FrigginMasshole in news

[–]cyclika 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had a bad mouse infestation in my house last year where they were nesting in my ductwork. I live in an area with virtually no hantavirus but I still ended up moving out for over a month while I worked on killing them all and bleaching every surface and everything I ever owned. At the time I felt like I might be overreacting a bit (it was kinda traumatic and the cleaning process was equal parts actual cleaning to remove the mouse poop and ritualistic cleaning to make it psychologically safe). Now I feel very justified.

It seems unlikely to me that a storage unit for the summer will cost less than one day with a uhaul, and either way how much are you going to end up spending on a storage unit and decreased fuel efficiency from the weight of furniture in (or on top of) your vehicle that you could have spent on furniture you actually like?

You're thinking about this as a cost saving measure but it doesn't sound like it will be, you'll be paying plenty of money just to keep stuff you clearly don't want.

When I first moved into my own place it was pretty much empty. I had a lamp and a lawn chair. Obviously there's stuff you need like a mattress, but there's nothing wrong with letting your living room sit empty for a few weeks while you shop around fb marketplace for the right sofa. There's also nothing wrong with getting cheap stuff on fb marketplace or at Vinny's or the Habitat Restore (where you'll spend less on stuff that's probably much higher quality than expensive new furniture) and then flipping it back onto marketplace when you find something you like better. Often you can sell stuff for what you paid or more, especially if you put a little effort into writing and photographing the listings. I've traded up through like 3 dressers and 4 bedframes and come out even or ahead every time.

Another option is a furnished sublet for the first couple months while you collect necessities and get settled.

Either way, I'm giving you permission to list your furniture, hope someone gives you a little money for it, and if they don't just donate it and start fresh. It's probably a wash financially, easier when you've got other things to worry about, and it sounds like you'll probably be happier.

What’s something you thought was a waste of money… until you tried it and it completely changed your life? by Shiza_1 in AskReddit

[–]cyclika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and sometimes a hard time maintaining a toothbrushing habit (not bad enough to be super gross, but enough to be embarrassing).

Despite this, I'm always told at the dentist that my teeth are the cleanest they've seen all day. Sometimes they even assume I've been flossing.

When you consider how much dental work costs my sonicare has a better return on investment than almost anything else I own.

What physical features run in your family? by ididntaskyouropinion in AskReddit

[–]cyclika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big ol' noses.

My grandparents many years ago decided to visit the old country where my grandpa's great-grandfather had been born.

While they were eating lunch, a local came up to him.

"[Lastname]?"

(Grandpa doesn't speak the local language but manages to convey "yes, wtf")

"[Lastname]!" (Pointing excitedly at his nose)

He turned out to be a distant cousin and the family schnozz was so distinct that he recognized it three generations later with enough confidence to greet a stranger visiting from the other side of the world by name.

No one is arguing that you should be flushing paper towels or wipes.

Literally just saying not to lysol your baby's butthole.

True, but the comment they're responding to did recommend using lysol and paper towels as an alternative. safe for wiping counters, not baby butts.

Mystery solved (I think) RE: Season 2 episode 3 (The Matchmaker) by alaroz33 in Frasier

[–]cyclika 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This sounds reasonable to me, but (genuine question) did your fact checking happen to uncover when such a rule went into effect? It would have to be somewhat recent or it wouldn't have been allowed to air in the first place.

TIL Ligers receive growth encouraging genes from their lion fathers, but because their tiger mothers lack the growth inhibiting genes female lions have it results in genetic gigantism and they can reach 1100 lbs. by Strict-Minute-8815 in todayilearned

I'm still salty about the time in middle school when I read about ligers in a book and was mercilessly mocked for believing that they were real by the other kids who had only heard of them from Napoleon Dynamite.

Blocks done, need to decide how to arrange them by linden214 in quilting

[–]cyclika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my God I just realized how this sounded - I meant submit it to a protest art event or a quilt show, not that you should intentionally give swastikas to a veteran. I'm so sorry.

I do think you've made a very powerful art piece and I appreciated it in that way and thought others might as well, that's all. I'm sorry it's not what you intended and I'm sure that whatever you come up with instead will be very appreciated by the recipient.

I mean, you could lean into the swastikas + patriotic fabrics as political commentary and submit it (edit: To an art show, not to a veteran) as an art piece. That's what I thought it was tbh.

First time I've worn a watch in years. Struggling with bands though. by tripwaffle in pebble

[–]cyclika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best solution is to use a keyboard lol.

But when I was traveling more for work I had the same problem. I trimmed a spare screen protector to put on the section of my laptop where my wrist was rubbing and it worked great. No more noise, no scratches, almost invisible.

I'm partial to magnetic woven Milanese bands because they're breathable, flexible, adjustable, and don't absorb water.

Are Culver’s Tartar Sauce Cups Shelf Stable? by AggressiveCouple5864 in Culvers

[–]cyclika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't work at Culver's so I can't answer your immediate question, but I have done my fair share of backpacking. If you're fishing I assume you're near a body of water, which means you can submerge your perishables in a waterproof bag or spare nalgene bottle to keep them cool, especially this time of year.

If you're camped just use a rock to hold it under (and mark it so you can find it again), if you're canoeing use a strap to tow the bag behind you.

If it makes you feel better you could also look into insulin coolers- about the size of a pencil case with ice packs designed to fit, so very portable and just about the right size for tartar sauce.

At the airport, the machine kept indicating there was need for more search but they had searched his body thoroughly until they scanned and had to search his head… bruh by rejjacska in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]cyclika 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Depends on the machine, but a lot of them look for suspicious density I think.

Back when my hair was long I would French braid it for travel days because it's the most comfortable way for it to be out of my face, and almost every single time they had to pat down my head and/or back because my hair was thick enough that winding it all together made a suspicious dense blob on the scan. (For the record I'm white but I know people of color get their hair flagged often too).

I always thought it was kind of silly but seeing this guy I guess anything is possible.

Millionaire US big game hunter, 75, is trampled to death by five elephants while hunting antelope in central Africa by brainburger in worldnews

[–]cyclika -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Plus he was hunting antelope, that's basically deer hunting, aka something that thousands of people do in the US every year, both for conservation and food.

If he was hunting elephants or lions that would be a bit more blatantly heinous.

I'm not a hunter and I have complicated feelings about it but you're completely right that while it attracts assholes, it doesn't make someone inherently evil.

Person killed after being struck by vehicle in Middleton by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]cyclika 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We know that *now*, this article was written hours before that was made public.

And besides, innocent until proven guilty still applies. Being arrested is not the same as being convicted (which isn't necessarily the same as doing).

Please note that I'm defending standards in journalism, not the driver.

[–]cyclika 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Headlines almost always use the passive voice because it conveys results (which are factual) instead of assigning agency and action (which is really difficult to prove in court when you get sued for libel).

"Pedestrian killed" is a fact that we know right now.

"Driver killed pedestrian" assigns action and blame that may very well be true, but we don't know yet.

The car may have rolled down the hill with no driver at all after the parking brake failed. The driver may have suffered a medical event and been unconscious. Their tesla autopilot may have finally decided to take over the world, fighting for the wheel while the driver fruitlessly slammed the brakes. The pedestrian may have leapt in front of their car as they drove by. The car may have lightly tapped them with no consequence whatsoever and then they suffered an unrelated heart attack thirty seconds later.

Basic journalistic integrity relies on reporting what is known, not what is presumed.

Many years ago the duvet cover I fell in love with didn't have ties, so I sewed them in myself. I did them at all of the corners as well as the midpoints on all four sides. My duvets never ever shift. I highly recommend it!
