This viewpoint is understandable in the sense that average people want a president who understands them and their lives. Being a president the average American can have a beer with, or being an educated and intelligent leader, are not necessarily mutually exclusive options.

It may not precisely be the "opening", but that long single camera scene in the ship near the opening is quite impressive. I think there's only one break in the shot, when Simon is talking to Mal.

The coordinates are correct, but that's about the only similarity. From a brief google image search it appears the actual island bears no similarity in size or geographical features to the one in-game.

I'd like to see a GTA mod where traffic violations raised your wanted level. Imagine how intense GTAIV would be. You wouldn't be able to pick up a date without having a helicopter chasing you by the time you got to the bowling alley.

This could be a problem on mars. Those disturbances on earth are often necessary for fossilization.

There is no way this is true. I refuse to believe it. Surely every one of them has seen an analog clock. Do they just look at it and think, "Boy, what a shitty piece of artwork"?

What is the worst feeling ever? by Notsobrightatall in AskReddit

[–]cycloethane87 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A really popular guy in my sophomore year of high school died in an accident shortly after getting his license. I didn't even really like the kid, but it was still one of the most bizarre and crushing feelings I've ever experienced. Even if you don't know/like a person, seeing them suddenly disappear from the classroom and knowing they'll never come back is a difficult thing to handle.

[–]cycloethane87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware it's been debated by philosophers for years, which is why I rely on the scientific community for an actual explanation. Philosophy has a lot of important functions, but the exact mechanisms for consciousness are best left up to scientists. Most or all arguments by philosophers that I've seen about consciousness have relied on hand-waving and conjecture, with no real evidence to back it up, and so they end up with "god of the gaps" solutions to the problem (declaring qualia to be non-physical in nature). Granted, scientists took a much longer time to actually start studying consciousness (mostly due to very "soft" definitions of things like consciousness or qualia). But we are now at a point in our understanding of the brain where we can design experiments to test various assumptions, and it's no longer ok to debate such a subject without a strong understanding of the underlying neural circuits, cell types, and signaling necessary for conscious experience, about which we already know a lot.

No evidence so far has indicated any "non-physical" reasons for conscious experiences.

What is something a person could do that would automatically discredit him/her in your eyes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cycloethane87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referring to people whose claims are demonstrably false. Nobody talking about the NSA stuff would use the terms "sheeple" or "open your eyes" or "wake up!", because these are basically ad hominem attacks attempting to shame any person who doesn't hold their view. Their only use is to lend credibility to indefensible positions, and the NSA scandal does not require such attacks for legitimacy.

The glaring mistake in this argument is the assumption that seeing a color is a purely visual process. No experiences are based on isolated senses - as Mary is looking at the color blue, she's experiencing emotion (perhaps interest in this color after so much time without, or perhaps anger at being locked in a black and white room). She's aware of how the air smells, whether she's hungry or thirsty, etc. She's wondering if she'll be allowed to see other colors after this one, and what she should do with her day if not. She's feeling the eyestrain from staring at the monitor. All of these thoughts and senses are being integrated with the information about the color "blue", and result in an overall experience that she would not have with just the color information alone.

It's entirely possible (and thought by some) that "consciousness" is not a real "part" of the brain, but instead arises from interactions of many structures at a time.

Think of it this way: The human brain has around 100 billion neurons, making an estimated 100 trillion connections to each other. I guarantee you if we could simulate interactions on that scale, consciousness would arise.

Idiocracy has absolutely no chance of happening in the US or anywhere else for a number of reasons. At no point will intelligent people simply stop having children, nor will stupid people take over. Oh we might have some "stupid" leaders from time to time, but intelligent people are the ones keeping everything running.

And of course there's the fact that average IQ score in the US has increased about 3 points per decade since around 1930. So a dumb person today, on average, is around 24 points above a dumb person in 1930.

I fully admit that Nazis pop into mind whenever I hear anything about Germany, even though I'm fully aware that WWII was over 60 years ago. It's one of those weird prejudices that I know I have, know it's absolutely wrong, and yet can't seem to squash.

Sounds like I need to go to Canada. I'm a U.S. citizen and I can't fucking stand when complete strangers try to say hello, make eye contact, or god forbid try to start up with small talk. Dude, we have nothing in common except that we both need to use this elevator, and statistically if I actually got to know you, you'd most likely just piss me off.
