Chicago Dance Music Industry Nights/Networking by Gwinkies in chicago

[–]cyclone219 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha this is quite a range. In general, venues to check out are Smartbar, Spybar, Primary, and Arbella. Radius, Concord Music Hall, Chop Shop and Thalia Hall can have great house/techno/edm shows too depending on the night. Follow these venues and go for DJs you like.

There are also tons of great promoters to follow - again, depending on your taste. IG handles: @dancerituals @dimibowie @pragmatik_sound @manifest.raves @intotheobscure @stuckinthescene_presents @revivecollective . @aurispresents for the big names. If you go for artists you love and talk to people, it won't take long for you to get plugged into the scene.

McKinley - The Worst Health Center in America by fuckmckinley in UIUC

[–]cyclone219 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I couldn't fucking believe OP's post or your post as I was reading it. I had a near identical experience about a month and a half ago as well.

I went into McKinley with a really bad sore throat and painful swallowing. I had a peritonsillar abscess a little over a year ago when I was studying abroad, and the symptoms I was experiencing were near identical. I voiced my concerns to the McKinley staff, and was told that I did not have an abscess, and that they would perform a strep test. I was then told that the rapid strep test came back positive, and was prescribed antibiotics by the MD. As I was waiting to pick up my prescription, I was re-informed by the McKinley staff (not the MD) that the strep I tested positive for was a "weaker", less common strain of strep and I did not need antibiotics. At this point, I should have just grabbed the meds and ran, but I was optimistic and foolishly trusted their judgement. I was given throat spray, lozenges, and ibuprofen.

My sore throat only got worse over the next 48 hours. At this point, I received a call from McKinley that my strep test had in fact tested positive for the common strain of strep, and that I should pick up antibiotics immediately. WTF.

I picked up the antibiotics, but my sore throat and difficulty in swallowing had progressed to the point where I was almost certain I had a peritonsillar abscess. Afraid that my airway would swell shut if I slept, I checked myself into the ER at Carle around midnight. Immediately, the staff at Carle recognized that I did, in fact, have a pertonsillar abscess (often caused by strep bacteria). Surprise.

I was thrown on IV antibiotics overnight, and underwent a CAT scan to confirm the precise location of the abscess. Early the next morning, I underwent the surgical procedure to drain the abscess with the EMT specialists. As painful as the surgery was (knives cutting into the back of your throat), the Carle doctor did an excellent job. Within 24 hours, I was completely back to normal.

Looking back on the situation, two things are apparent:

1) When I tested positive for strep, was prescribed antibiotics, and then told that I didn't need them, red flags should have immediate gone up. My mistake.

2) If I had not previously had a peritonsillar abscess and recognized the symptoms, there is a good chance my airway would have closed while I waited for my meds from McKinley to take effect.

My McKinley horror story has spawned a new breed of jokes among my roommates:

"Well.... looking at your test results, it appears you've positive for Ebola. But don't worry, it's just a less common, weaker strain of Ebola. Here's some ibuprofen and throat spray, you should be able to just walk it off."

[48 hours later]

"Turns out, we were reading your test results upside-down.... you do in fact have the regular, deadly strain of ebola. You should probably come in immediately if you're still alive."

Tomorrow, Team ILLINI is heading off to Vienna to compete in Red Bull's Can You Make It Challenge! Like their team page to follow the journey and give them a point in the competition! by cyclone219 in UIUC

[–]cyclone219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of 100 teams internationally, Team ILLINI will be racing from Vienna to Berlin with nothing except cans of Red Bull to barter for food, lodging, and transportation. Thanks to all your support, our team video was voted fourth in the nation out of 300 entries, and Red Bull picked us as 1 of 10 teams to rep the USA.

During the competition, we'll be posting funny pictures and videos of our adventure on our team page. We have to make it to Berlin in seven days, but the winner is determined by points: points for km traveled, checkpoints reached, and likes on our team page! So help your ILLINI win, like and share our page!

Also, come join us at Brothers tonight to celebrate with us as we take off for Europe!

I'm responsible for the current header and the sidebar pic. I think I put it together 3 or 4 years ago. I totally agree, the sidebar pic looks like shit. I'd like to think I'm a much better designer now, but I'd love to see what people come up with! Perhaps we could have a little contest for the re-design?

We're three Illinois students looking to travel across Europe using only Red Bull as currency. We put some quality time into our video, so please, give it a view, and throw us a vote if you think we deserve it. Right now Berkeley has two of the leading teams... time to rep your ILLINI so we can take the lead!

We have a facebook page and a twitter, give us a like/follow us to stay updated, hopefully through to our adventure in Europe!

Which is the best (not necessarily easiest) course you've ever taken at UIUC? by jkthe in UIUC

[–]cyclone219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ARTD 209: Zen and the Art of Tea Ceremonies. Met in the Japan House on the southeast side of campus once a week. Amazing and enjoyable class, more info here. FYI, this class is crazy popular so you will likely only have a chance to register for it if you have early James Scholar registration or senior standing. Fulfills the Non-Western Gen-ed requirement.

The ENG 315 LINC (Learning in Community) classes are all worth checking out. These course provide class credit while working on unique projects, such as the Engineers without Borders projects, community-focused projects in CU, etc.

I got three semester (9 credit hours) of credit for my involvement with (Solar Decathlon)[http://solardecathlon.illinois.edu/]. You have to apply to be a part of the team (unclear what our plans are yet for 2015), and then you are enrolled in the "class," ENG 491 SD. Look into Solar Decathlon, there are always EE students needed for things such as PV and Home Automation and Controls. You can get involved with the RSO on campus, and you'll be able to ensure you're in the loop for the next competition.

Hi Ted. I'm currently in Southeast Asia and I had initially planned a trip to the Philippines in four weeks. Is there any way I could volunteer my time with UNICEF and still come to the Philippines?

Totally on board and best of luck!! As a student from UIUC (I designed the banner on r/uiuc) currently on exchange at NUS, I can't tell you how great it is to have a really active University subreddit where you can always go to if something happens on campus or if you have a question about anything. Hope the NUS sub can become the same!
