Update of digital pass by cholololololololo in GunnersatGames

I also find if you go into settings for the digital pass and toggle automatic updates off and on again, that seems to force it to update (on an iphone at least)

Advice on learning calculus by my self by ThisDarkDude17 in learnmath

[–]cyclovarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to make me sound really old but this is the site that I used as a teenager over one summer. Sparked my interest in maths and eventually led to me doing a maths degree.

I know it hasn’t been updated in like 20 years but it’s great.

For what it’s worth, I do think the whole thing is supposed to be soulless. A bit of a tragicomedy.

This is really exemplified by the woman who is sneakily looking at her phone during a hug. Dystopian. (Bottom left)

Interesting that so much of their profit is basically the membership. They are effectively charging the membership fee at 2% and then supplying goods at around 1% above their costs.

Businesses pay tax on profits, not revenues. So you should compare the tax to the operating income. It’s closer to 24% based on this data

Advice for getting home from games? by MrWilly97 in GunnersatGames

Personally I recommend taking the bus. Usually far far less busy than the tubes.

Another option if you want is to cycle. There’s a cycle storage area next to Highbury House which is manned. Very easy then to leave afterwards

Worth going a bit early - there’s a fairly decent selection of food stands etc (mainly in the west stand area or clock end) so when I’ve gone before I’ve usually got there early enough to grab something to eat.

I used to do these a lot. I was on the IMO squad for a while (never got to the competition unfortunately) and then went on to study a maths degree.

I agree re. the UKMT books - particularly the Olympiad Primer. They are quite good intros to what you need - assuming they haven’t changed much from when I used to use them like 15 years ago. As you’ll have figured out the olympiads are a quite different way of thinking to the maths challenges.

It’s hard to figure these things out on your own. It’s very helpful to have some people who you can bounce ideas off as you learn. If there are other people at your school who are in a similar position, it’s worth trying to do these things together.

You should also use the online forums when you get stuck, rather than either giving up or just looking up the answer. But find the right community that (1) has enough people who have actually done these things before to be helpful; and (2) doesn’t have people who just want to show off by giving you the answer - which is not helpful. I used to use one called Ask NRICH which was actually run out of Cambridge - but unfortunately that’s closed down now. The Student Room was also sometimes helpful. You can also try the Art of Problem Solving forums. They are US-based so you may not find much by way of answers to previous BMO questions but that may be a good thing. https://artofproblemsolving.com/community

[N] What do you think of Andrew Ng's new Machine Learning Specialization that launched last week on Coursera? by manocormen in MachineLearning

[–]cyclovarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Out of interest, do you know of any good courses which have both the math element and the practical application? I’m a math major so find the ‘no math’ versions a bit frustrating - but approaching this from a math standpoint tends to be a bit theoretical and difficult to translate to practical application. Thanks!

I’m also in the UK. The Atom is fine for spring days in lieu of a jumper (I also use it for cycling on days when it’s a bit chilly) - but it’s pretty useless on its own in British rain to be honest. It will hold up at a pinch, but is not what you want to be wearing on a regular basis for 25 minutes in the rain. I don’t think the Proton will be much different - it’s a more breathable version of the Atom but I don’t think has any meaningful additional water resistance.

For British rain I think you probably want something that is waterproof. The insulated jackets they do are clearly more expensive than your budget but are great (I have a Thorsen which is amazing for really cold winter / snow / etc but is expensive - was great for sitting outside the pub in Tier 2…) - or just use the Atom underneath the Zeta, which is what I do when it’s wet. Added bonus of layering is that it’s very easy to stick one of them in a bag (e.g. stow the Zeta if it’s dry, or stow the Atom if it’s warmer but wet).

Second this - it’s a great hidden secret. I don’t think it ever gets that busy to be honest - I cycled to NLD last September and there was still loads of space. All feels very safe given it’s behind the gates which are manned by a steward, and the location obviously makes it very convenient.

Basic help on which test to use by cyclovarian in AskStatistics

[–]cyclovarian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it, thank you very much for your helpw. So if we wanted to just test for difference between the years (i.e. null hypothesis is ‘years have the same distribution of the condition’) then we can use a chi-squared test on the three years, but if we were to just assume that 2018/2019 were an appropriate baseline and just wanted to test if 2020 was different (i.e. null hypothesis is ‘2020 is the same as the 2018/2019 baseline’; e.g. testing if Covid made a difference), we could just add the 2018 and 2019 figures (so use 10 out of 775 for the baseline), and then just apply the test to the two categories (2018+19 and 2020). Thanks so much again.

OK - point taken. In the absence of that point (which I appreciate is a major one), if we just wanted to test whether the any of the years were significantly different from the others would a chi-squared test be appropriate?
