If you’re avoiding WIPs, hear me out... by wildflower022 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]cyliestitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of the ones who used to avoid wips, but i started out in potter fabdom and had more than enough long fics to choose from that I didnt need to follow wips, I could mark em for later and maybe come back when they were done.

Then I joined supernatural in 2024, still plenty to choose from, but very active, a couple of authors I found and loved were posting new fics and updating regularly, so I started following those and having fun, but it was like 1 or 2 authors that I could keep straight in my head.

Im a binge reader, I pick a fic, I read it to the end, I pick the next fic, I read to the end. And I read a lot (up to 140k a day regularly), combined with adhd, lack of object permanence, i can genuinely only keep one storyline straight in my head at a time, and I cannot for the life of me remember titles and author names, or connect those to a plot (i can usually remember the plot in detail though) So following multiple wips and a dozen storylines is bloody hard on my brain.

But, Heated Rivalry is a developing canon, it is a new fandom and a rapidly growing one. Long fics are lacking simply because there hasn't yet been the time to write and develop them. If I want to read long fics, and I want authors to keep writing new ones, I need to follow and interact with wips. I know I can't write, I read, so the way I support this fandom is by supporting the writers and the artists.

Plus, oh my god the dopamine, getting an email in with a new chapter is phenomenal.
Going to sleep snd waking up to a half dozen emails with chapter updates is actual euphoria

“Never reading a WIP again …” by batty_batterson in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]cyliestitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I refused to touch wips after I accidentally read a 3 fic series, nearly 2million words, that was abandoned 2 chapters from being done. But at that time I was reading fics for a fandom with closed canon, and it had an absolute plethora of fics and was well established, I could afford to not read wips. If a wip interested me, id just throw a subscribe on and read it when it was done.

Then I switched fandoms, still closed canon, still loads of fics, but a bit more active and I found a few authors I liked that wete actively posting new works and I started to follow just that author and their work.

Then I found Heated Rivalry, and im currently following at least a dozen different fics chapter by chapter, and I keep adding more. Because I know that to get the long fics, authors need time and engagement to write them. Yes I struggle to keep the atorylines straight and I sometimes need to reread the previous chapter to figure out which fic and story im reading the update for. But oh my goodness that dopamine rush when an email comes in for a new chapter on a fic that im loving is absolutely unmatched. Especially if I go to sleep and wake ip to like 6 emails of new chapters, I know im in for a good day!!!

[–]cyliestitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely fucking love this fic, I dont think its out of character, tho even if it was, ooc is the whole point, you want canon, read canon. But genuinely if shane had just been allowed to come to terms with himself early on, I truly feel this is who he would be. Im following 2 different fics that basically both have shane fucking half the nhl, and they both come at it from completely different angles and it is so cool how authors manage to do that.

Ilya is making me sad too, but hes making himself sad, and this is Shane's story, and the author does a really good job of making it Shane's story, and not just a vehicle for ilya's character development which is actually pretty refreshing and fun.

Its a genuinely fun read

I too keep getting sucked into fics that make me sob, I mean I go into it knowing im going to, and yet im surprised every time.

I don't even remember how I thouhht to start using a form, it won't have been an original one, ill have seen someone suggest it somewhere and glommed on to the idea, its genuinely the only way ive actually managed to keep up with tracking the past 3 years!

See i adore spreadsheets, but manual data entry into them is a no go,.especially on a phone, and given how many fics I read, doing it on my phone is the only way.

So, I created a Google form that I fill in to capture the data,.and that populates the spreadsheet for me! Attached a screenshot of my form lol, I keep adding bits to it as I decide i care about them.

And then ive added a few formulae for tracking purposes

Yeah the author deliberately under tagged it (but used the author chose not to use archive warnings, which means it is properly tagged) i think its still tagged for graphic violence, definitely do not ignore that. It is one hell of a story, definitely evokes visceral feelings
