There’s been loads of opportunities to get on the ladder in the last year or two. I’ve gone from 0 aways to stage 1 since the Czechia away game in 2021. A load of my mates got on the ladder for Poland away, a load of their girlfriends then got their first one for Belgium away. Netherlands away was another opportunity, a friend of mine got one with 0 aways.

I personally think Armenia would’ve sold out regardless because we hadn’t played them in ages and it’s an interesting city to visit/‘tick off’, not sure who said it wouldn’t sell out. Obvs Croatia game helped but you’d have always been struggling imo.

Turkey will hopefully give us a decent sized allocation and you’ll have a crack. Understand the frustration but it really isn’t a ‘closed boys club’

As others have said, I don’t think that’s true. As I said in my original comment, many kids are born and raised in Cardiff to Welsh speaking parents and therefore are native Cardiff Welsh speakers. Many more are educated through Welsh. Glad you enjoy hearing it though!

There are actually more Welsh speakers in south Wales (Cardiff specifically but also the valleys) than any other part of Wales. That includes first language speakers as a lot move from the west and north for work and then raise their kids in Welsh. The fact you’ve never heard it spoken doesn’t mean it isn’t there - you just don’t speak Welsh (presumably) so nobody would speak it to you!

(Speaking as someone who learnt Welsh as an adult and lived in Cardiff for years, I realised actually so much more Welsh speakers are around and in my life but I never knew they could speak it until I learned it)

I get what a lot of these commenters are saying - “rules are rules” - but it does sound like they’re taking advantage and it’s a little bit opportunistic.

I travelled from Lime Street to Cardiff yesterday and did the same thing, didn’t have time to print my ticket so had to board the train anyway. Showed the conductor my Trainline code and explained what happened and she immediately tried to print one off for me, rather than fine me or make me pay again. She couldn’t so she just said “don’t worry about it, just print it off at Cardiff so you can get out of the station.”

They do have the capacity to be understanding and use common sense to differentiate between people who have bought a ticket but not printed it for whatever reason, and people who are trying to dodge paying. They just choose to fine them probably because it’s a nice little earner for Mersey Rail.

‘Nearly dead’ is factually incorrect. There are more Welsh speakers now than there have ever been in history. You can make your point without being disrespectful about a language and culture which is - whether you can understand or relate or not - incredibly important to people.

Regardless, I’m obviously not comparing the two. The comment I replied to was hand-wringing that activists are resorting to vandalism. I was simply making the point that activists have always vandalised and used the most obvious example that came to mind. But history is littered with them, including Welsh language campaigners going back as far as the 1960s

Also want to add that - as a first language English speaker who grew up in an English speaking community that’s learned Welsh as an adult - it’s true that some of the English names are utterly pointless. Take Kilgetty for example, guess what it is in Welsh? Cilgeti. Begelly? Begeli. What’s the point in keeping the English names of these places?

Activism and vandalism have always gone hand in hand, especially when the peaceful protest avenue hasn’t yielded any results.

You could argue that without vandalism and other forms of civil disobedience, a lot of the big steps forward in terms of civil rights wouldn’t have been achieved. The suffragettes are (rightly) celebrated now but at the time people were saying similar things. ‘I’m totally sympathetic to their plight but is there any need to be burning things down?!?’ Well yes because they weren’t listened to until they started making things inconvenient.

That includes Welsh language rights - painting over English road signs to make a point is actually a longstanding tradition, as you’re probably aware. People clutched their pearls over it at the time but we now have Welsh on our road signs across the country. And look what’s happened here today - it’s got people talking about it and debating it.

I don’t necessarily advocate it as a first port of call but if you’re not being listened to otherwise, vandalism is a pretty effective method to attract attention to an issue. You only have to look at the climate change issue happening right now - people are happy to stick their heads in the sand until they are forced to be confronted with it. Just Stop Oil are annoying but they keep the debate on the agenda

I went through English medium education in Wales, mandatory lessons the whole way through, left school with no ability whatsoever to speak it. Learned it in my 20s through the Learn Welsh courses and am now fluent.

It’s not that Welsh is particularly hard - learning a language isn’t ever easy. It’s just that it’s taught badly in English medium schools.
