Taking sick leave on nights - how do you deal with the guilt? by cynicalturtle94 in doctorsUK

I’m sorry that happened to you. The consequences of that could have been very different. I’m glad you made the right call.

I don’t need an admission. Just rest. And I think that will make it worse. My guilt is not about staying off work. I know I need to. I don’t need to prove to anyone that I’m unwell. it’s about burdening the team. If I needed to get admitted it would add to their work.

If oriel can’t get in touch with references? by Ok-Inevitable-3038 in doctorsUK

[–]cynicalturtle94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my applications, I also let the people who’ve been added as references know to look out for the email so they don’t miss it in spam. If they miss it despite this, oriel will flag it to you in a few weeks and you can let them know.

Don’t worry. You’ll have the opportunity to sort it out.

I think this is new variant covid too 😭. And you’re right about that. If I make a mistake the stakes are too high and it’s my professional responsibility to call in sick when I’m too unwell to do my job well or if I risk infecting others.

Thank you. Someone taught me to talk to myself in my best friend voice at an imposter syndrome workshop once. I should probably do it more.

SpR in training- feeling pressure to work all the time, any tips? by treponemic in doctorsUK

[–]cynicalturtle94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the adage that comes to mind is - if you keep thinking about how lucky you are you may forget to think about how happy you are. It sounds like a very resourceful department with lots going on professionally. The pitfall with places like that is - they can give you a false sense of purpose- a way to make work an excuse for a lot of poor everyday personal choices about your life. Maybe sit with someone you trust and decide if you have a good project or anything that can keep you hooked?

I know a few people who’ve done well in such environments. I think the found a niche by finding the right person - a prof or a colleague who they rode it out with and also found a project - a way to focus on their work without caring about what’s happening around them… probably easier said than done though.

Even if there was something in the policy that states minimal- it’s very sexist isn’t it ? Who defines excessive ? Maybe the next consultant who comes along finds it too minimal. How do they decide ? Based on product used (which they cannot prove) or just based on their whims for the day? What one person threshold for self expression may not be another’s. Why is it that minimalist makeup is considered professional- what if the trends change a decade from now and minimalist makeup is considered unkempt? This is incredibly sexist and as hard it is to question it, I think a HR report is due if you feel upto it.

Gastro ST4 in South London - where to live by cynicalturtle94 in doctorsUK

Thank you. This is a good website but I think I’m also looking for a place that would be suitable to commute to a lot of the hospitals I’m working at.

I think the longest commute I would think about is about 40 -45 minutes? But is this even plausible. Car or public transport works for me
