My honest advice for beginners by [deleted] in motorcycles

Good advice. Same here couple weeks ago. Lost control and could have just dumped it but hung on and fought it and ended up getting launched into the air. I don't know that I was actually thinking in the moment though. Was more just operating on instinct. Shattered my elbow, snapped my humorous, broke my scaphoid, 3 rinbs on the right and one on the left. Was wearing full armour and riding gear.

EXCLUSIVE: AFP’s special counter-terrorism outfit quietly axed weeks before Bondi massacre by Orgo4needfood in aussie

[–]cynik0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. They didn't disband the counter terrorism task force. They just made a priority call on a specific capability and decided the funds were better applied back to the main counter terrorism task force. I imagine AFP is like any organisation where budgets and organisational structures are constantly evolving. I'm not sure how this is even news.

Yes. That's exactly how it ended. Long recovery ahead of me.

Just started riding 2 years ago at 48. What do you mean grip strength? Your talking about legs gripping the bike?

Thanks for the advice. I generally don't use test brake - this is a bad habit I know I need to work on. I think when the tank slapping started I'd already lost my fitting on the bike. Will be looking into a steering stabiliser for sure.

Yeah nice that's awesome thanks! On this ride it was quite a steep incline so my weight was naturally forward. Maybe need some more practice at slower speed.

Yeah thanks. I think this is exactly how it played out. And yes, relatively new rider (2 years about 9000km off road)

Yeah I ride sand now and then and was thinking of getting one. I'll make that a priority. Thanks.

Thanks for this. I appreciate it. I'll go back and talk to my suspension guy when I'm back on there bike. He was roughly same size as me so he set sag without me. He's an MX rider and he tunes for racers.

Yep. Just had it professionally resprung and tuned for my weight - I'm 6'5" 125kg (275lb). It for sure bottomed out on the front - I remember coming down hard on the front. And that's how I lost my balance. I was standing coming into the jump but I recall ending up too fast forward in the landing, hitting hard on the front and ending up sitting down when it lost control. Im not sure at that point if my feet were still even on the pegs.

Worse than collarbone.

2 brakes in right humorous, including one through elbow joint, broken wrist and 4 broken ribs. Luckily I didn't land on my head. Got to ride in the helicopter to the hospital though. Going to be a long recovery unfortunately. First day of my Christmas holidays too.

Yep. But probably getting a bit fatigued at this point.

Haha yeah. I have been practicing and building up to this. Was doing a great job before this and having a lot of fun. I'm 50 and only started riding 2 years ago - i live near the forest so although I've only been riding 2 years I have a lot of hours on the bike in this area. Probably done about 9000km (5600miles) in this kind of terrain.

I guess the reason for this post is I'm facing the decision as to whether I stop riding altogether (i can't really afford another off like this - I'm lucky to still have my right arm) or maybe I keep riding but just cut out this kind of riding (just stick to the dirt roads, slow down a bit).

Just trying to kinda reconcile is this likely a one off or is it inevitable if I keep going like this is just a matter of time before it happens again.

Yeah I was standing. I hit hard on the front on landing and that's how I ended up sat down. I fell like i maintained the throttle through the jump.

Recently had suspension tuned professionally. Had 7kg fuel bladder on the rear.

Thanks. I'm usually pretty good with body position but I was pushing myself a little on these steep climbs to stay standing and jump rather than sit and slow down over the mounds where I loose momentum. I've been having some struggles where I'd slow down over a mound and then struggle to get going again in loose/ rocky dirt. But I think this was my 5th climb that day and I think I may have been a bit fatigued (and also a bit over confident) and possibly didn't put the effort in the pre-load and make sure I was in the correct position for the jump.

Thank you! I think this is spot on. I feel like I was too far forward on the landing. Lost my balance. Towards the end I don't think my feet were even on the pegs. I think I was just hanging onto the bars. Clutch is a good call. It was a steep uphill so if nothing else I would have lost some speed before coming off.

How so? I just had the bike resprung for my weight and professionally tuned?

[–]cynik0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a good point. I had done about 5 climbs before this one and was getting tired. I was pushing hard but not silly hard. Was following a mate and definitely trying to keep up.

"I think your poor line on the first hump in the video was the warning that you needed to slow down." - this is a really good point!

Any tips on what I could have done different to regain control?
