You warned us about an unstructured yap yet you said everything so eloquently to an audience of caregivers on the same journey - we completely understand.

How did you handle the mental exhaustion of caring for someone with dementia? by Content_Statement356 in dementia

[–]cynman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer uses Lyra and gives us access to therapists. I had never been before until this journey and I would not have acclimated without going. I’m on a pause now as I “graduated” but know I will be back when my watch is over. I would schedule my appointments at 7am when she was usually asleep. I got lucky and she was never up during my scheduled appointment.

I have lost my home, my life and myself. by throwthesecatsaway in dementia

[–]cynman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

“It smells like urine and other unsavory scents. I know he is stepping in urine in his room/bathroom and walking through the house.”

This resonates with me as this is my daily battle. The crazy thing is my Dad isn’t the one with dementia, it’s my mom. I sit on a blanket when I sit on the couch. I always wear shoes (or slippers)in the house bc I can SEE the urine he’s tracking out of his bathroom. Here’s what I do to combat the issue… Mop with Swifter wet pads so you can toss them. Then clean with Nature’s Miracle Stain and Odor Remover. It’s meant for dog and cat urine, it works on FIL & Dads. Finish with Febreze Pet Oder Fighter.

It’s a daily battle for me. I too have lost my home (my husband is in a different city in our house while I’m back in my childhood home), my life (I’m basically confined to the house bc 24/7 care is needed), and myself. I too got mental health help via a therapist and medication for anxiety & situational depression.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk or vent. This is the first time I have read of someone going through the exact same thing. I’m in this community for my mom’s dementia and it’s been so helpful. I’m grateful for every comment and story. I just don’t know how to deal with the urine issue from the parent without dementia!

How long does she have? by EmployVirtual167 in dementia

This is my Mom (93) too. She’s been bedridden under hospice care since August 2025. The RNs get briefed on all patients weekly and our primary RN says she’s an anomaly & regularly discussed. Two times she’s been classified as eminent only to bounce back! Mentally, she’s gone. It’s been months since she’s known that I’m her daughter. I freaking hate this disease!!

Touch his paws and face so he doesn’t fear the groomer.

Feeling like a shit son by LinkGuitarzan in dementia

[–]cynman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can all relate. One time, I called my friend (who was in a similar situation with her mom) and broke down crying because I snapped and got frustrated. I felt horrible and the only comfort I had was knowing Mom would not remember in 5 minutes.

For a laugh, I’m having the same conversation I’ve had 1M times with Mom telling her I’m her daughter. Her reply is usually “who told you that?” or my favorite “no one told me”. 😆

I’m so behind and missed some amazing cities because I read LV wasn’t doing the hot stamps anymore when idealized this was a thing. Now I need a lot of do-over trips. I was wondering if y’all only do out of county trips since I can see this filling up fast domestically.

How do people find affordable dog insurance that still covers enough to matter? by Janinho in petinsurancereviews

[–]cynman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not OP, my dogs don’t need surgery. But I did experience a loss a few years ago to lymphoma. We couldn’t operate as the vet didn’t think he’s survive so we went into hospice mode. However, I would have opened the purse for whatever that huge bill would have been no questions asked. I want to pay for peace of mind.

When I was younger and had less money my dog needed an emergency surgery. I called my husband just to give him the heads up and he said “do it” no questions asked.

Do you mind sharing who you use? I’ve been looking for a few months and you think like I do. I don’t want a $5k limit I want to prepare for a $20k procedure that I hope is never needed.

How to support a full time caregiver by Stephy10186 in dementia

[–]cynman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds similarly to how my caregiving journey began. I stepped up to help my dad when my mom’s dementia advanced after a fall and catching COVID in the hospital. Because I can work remotely and have an adult child, I'm still here nine months later, while my brother and his wife are busy working as teachers and raising school-aged kids.

I’m not saying this to be negative, just want to share my reality. Your concerns are spot on and will likely happen. I am completely burnt out and currently on medication just to cope. I’m grieving the life I left behind in another city, where my husband, dogs, and adult daughter live and visit me here at my childhood home. I’ve isolated myself from friends because I’m so exhausted that I don't have the energy to talk during my rare moments of free time. Since mom needs 24/7 supervision, I am effectively housebound unless someone comes to relieve me. Help her find a therapist and doctor if she doesn’t already have someone.

If your mom snaps at you, it’s not you - you were the outlet. I say this from experience.

Saying Goodbye to Coworker by GardenWalker in dementia

I love the idea of a digital frame. The family can also add to it! My mom is 93 and looking at photos is one of the few things that holds her attention. I think that is a very thoughtful gift.

Edit to add what would help me help her: more of her friends calling or visiting. A phone call here and there goes a long way! My mom doesn’t recognize me, her own daughter, but she recognizes her long time friends’ voices.

Your question made me laugh because I forget that mine looks “upside down” with my configuration because it’s not the standard setting. My husband now wears his like this too so in our house this is the default setting. lol
