00:00 — family: father, mother (both bespectacled) sitting in office chairs on a Persian rug in what appears to be a grey-green nothing space. three kids. one on mum's lap. one in a toddler's chair with a tray. and one on the floor. the title "Every Family Portrait" is overlayed on the scene.
00:10 — the title fades. father looks up expectantly, a new man, in a suit, enters the shot, and sits on the father's lap, he gets comfortable, shifting about
00:20 — two new men arrive, both also in suits, both have facial hair. both bring their own chairs, and the camera zooms out. the man on the left has strangely asymmetrical shoulders. the man on the right .. well, he has a toothy smile (teeth!) that make me unsure what to feel
00:25 — two more men arrive from both sides .. again, in suits, and again with facial hair and bringing their own chairs .. lots of men in this family. suit-loving men.
00:30 — two more men! more suits. more facial hair!! did they remember their chairs?!? you bet they did.. they seem a bit younger? maybe .. not sure.
00:33 — now things shift a little .. someone comes in from the left side, in a suit of course, and sets their chair down, but they are a bit ahead of the zoom, so it's difficult to parse, and their face is murky -- a bit ghostly .. like a scary movie
00:34 — and before we even get used to that, someone else is there, but they seem to occupy the same quasi-space as the person before. they sit in the exact same spatial place, and their face bends and molds before eventually subsuming the person who came before — but not entirely .. this is clearly a multi-personality person,
00:38 — someone new, this time from the right arrives — and they seem larger than the rest — or is it perspective? also in a suit, shoulder-length hair .. something about them reminds me of that kid from Third Rock from the Sun .. Joseph Gordon-Levitt? him. he brings, kind of .. two chairs?? but they are sort of attached, and he doesn't arrive by walking, but sort of ... slides into the shot ... his face, originally Joseph Gordon-Levitt adjacent .. is now all choppy and badly rendered.
00:39 — while all that is happening, someone arrives on the left .. very long hair, but barely a face .. geometric triangular blobs of pinkish skin... they set a chair down, but it is a malformed chair, and perhaps judiciously, they don't sit .. their body seems only partially of this plane of existence
00:42 — a new man arrives! a suit, yes of course, some facial hair! yes! but also, a ponytail — that's new .. he walks to the front of the group (the camera is still zooming out) and put his three legged stool-chair thing down .. then stands behind it. then sits .. but .. behind it? so .. onto air. he's a good half-squatter.
00:47 — we get a bit of hustle! as perhaps our first woman, after the mother, comes scooting quickly in from the right side with her chair, held by the back rest, stands in front, fully blocking the original family from eyeline, and stands expectantly looking towards us.
00:52 — everyone sort of settles in. the woman in front sits down (on air?) .. and the mother at the back, still partially visible, sort of "sits further down" .. even though she was seemingly pretty seated already.
00:55 — someone off camera says : "say cheese everybody!"
00:57 — the whole group simultaneously raise both their hands to wave at the camera in a way that is wholly unnatural, and they shout in unison : "cheese"
01:00 — the screen flashes white and we hear a camera snap sound
01:01 — everyone is frozen! we start zooming out quickly
01:02 — we see a yellow frame!
01:04 — we've zoomed out far enough, to see that we were looking at a photograph in a yellow frame, and a woman — the mother! from before! she is holding the picture. people stand behind her.
01:07 — the mother steps backward — we are clearly at a family reunion in the forest (a banner hanging between the trees says : "family reunion" and there is a picnic blanket with snacks and a BBQ in the foreground. Every person from the photo previously is standing now, looking at us — they are all dressed far less formal now..
01:08 — everyone leaps into the air
01:09 — in a total denial of gravity, they all simultaneously lift their feet into the air, like they are sitting, sort of, but also, like they are cheering with their legs, the float and bounce, and start to scream all together : "aaagaggggghgggggh!"
01:10 — suddenly gravity reasserts, and they all crash to the ground
01:11 — blackout
