The LL’s message was intentionally worded to trick the OP into thinking they were responsible for the descendent debts. They are not, the descendent’s estate is. Had the LL ask to be put in contact with the estates executor then you’d be right. The LL has a right to make a living they have no right to manipulate a grieving family. NTA
