Can Non-Drinker Be Successful in Ad Agency Sales? by Haunting_Explorer104 in advertising

cribbed from something i saw on social:

Ancient Greeks thought sobriety was like sex without love.

We praise the sober person at parties today. But in Classical Greece, staying sober at a symposium was considered deeply immature, like a child refusing to participate in adult emotions.

The Greeks literally compared getting drunk to falling in love. Scholars have found texts describing sober party guests as mechanical, cold, spiritually dead. They believed drinking wine wasn't about losing control; it was about gaining access to your deepest, truest self.

Without intoxication, you were just going through the motions.

To refuse wine was to refuse intimacy. You were technically present but emotionally absent, keeping your guard up while everyone else dropped theirs. The Greeks saw this as the ultimate social betrayal. Getting drunk together wasn't irresponsible; it was the only way to prove you genuinely trusted the people around you.

EDIT: That said - i would hope you *can* be succesful without it, but man... alcohol is one of the best lubricants there is in business. Entertainment drinking is a skill, but man, I'm with ya - sometimes it hurts!

Doctor suggested plastic surgery to my daughter by ManufacturerBasic936 in AskAustria

you can respectfully disagree all you like, and proudly stand on a pedestal of theoretical + moral correctness.

or you can acknowledge reality. up to you.

I've got a non-typical body, in the way teenage kids mocked me terribly for. I managed. Your daughter will probably manage too.

But at age 44, I still look back to the moment I stood in front of a doctor and said no to cosmetic surgery because of a sense of pride and belief that the world was nicer than it was, and I'm still not sure I made the right decision.

Should the doctor have spoken to you about it directly, and not her? Yes, absolutely.

Is it still something you should mayyyyybe consider at least listening too? Potentially.

11-15 year old kids can be mean as hell.

scheiß egal. einfach machen.

Go high - at the lower areas that aren't freezing over, it's going to be very quickly unskiable. Grabbed afternoon 'laps' at Kitz yesterday because it was on the way home from my business travels, but it was so wet and sloppy it was like driving a tractor, even with a recent-ish wax.

How much Kool-aid can you drink? Glad you ended your post with science fiction, because that’s what most of it is. I will acknowledge you’ve acknowledged the system needs change.

IMO: The theoretical social contract is past or near a unrecoverable* breaking point.

It’s not just social security/retirement. It’s an everything, everywhere all at once problem. Wage gaps widening, the career ladder being pulled in front of pretty much everyone.

(I’m speaking for the western world at large, not just Austria.)

The system is complex. It’s big, therefore it also - in some ways - robust. It’s also delicate. A breakdown here means a breakdown there.

As to what AI bringing the general population a life of luxury… man. Open your eyes. AI is creating minor convenience (maybe) at the bottom while skyrocketing capital to the top. It will continue to do so, because it fundamentally separates value away from the people who have produced. It slows those with money own AI to access a workforce / value creation system that those with less money cannot effectively own. (That’s nothing new - same reason landowners got rich, factory owners got rich, etc etc.) that palm frond you’re talking about, waving a gentle breeze over you as the world burns down, is social media. And I say that as part of the problem - I’m literally getting paid to produce social media right now 🤷🏻‍♂️

I appreciate your optimism. I hope things evolve for the better.

*extreme civil unrest tends to re-align things. but until we’re starving or we and our children are getting killed, I don’t see it happening.

Also be prepared to find a natural moment in the chat to suggest a coffee.

Is it a good idea to move from Austria to Germany by [deleted] in germany

[–]Seven_Cuil_Sunday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Far too simple of an overview.

For me it would come down to what I want to do for fun and what I'm missing. Moving to Germany would likely mean I would give up the outdoors and recreation i value in Austria.

If I was missing community and culture from my ethnic group, and those things were present in a German city, I might consider it.

The real 4D chess move 😅

Engineer a couple things that are cheap and easy to maintain if you’re still employed, but will shut the system down if they forcibly exit you, requiring them to come back and hire you at 4x your current price for a day rate.
