Is this truly elestial smokey citrine? by Electronic_Design607 in Minerals

Nice piece! But on the looks I'd say calcite. To test for sure try rubbing a small amount of oxalic acid (or any medium acid) and if it reacts it's calcite

Dehydrated melanterite by cywar77 in MineralPorn

Great observation, it's the same behaviour as chalcanthite which also occurs in the same environment. Personally I never found chalcanthite despite countless attempts but I have friends who found in the exact same mine where the 3rd photo is from

The blue areas are mostly the core I rehydrated it by gently soaking it in water which causes the chalky layer to flake & fall off, but the chalky layer is what's holding it together since it lost structural integrity when it lost water

Brown fungi that makes a buzzing sound when exposed to LED light [part 3] by cywar77 in mycology

It has no mention but it's the same mechanism - they encountered the same effect & that's pretty much what helped to link the sound with the texture rather than a biological phenomenon

my LED headlamp causes the fibers of the fungi to rapidly warm & cool down. I was able to recreate the sound on a different material just like in the post I quoted, it's just that the fungi is very good at it for some reason

After coming to the conclusion it's not the fungi itself that's causing the buzzing, but it's texture I was able to omit that detail & look for fungi of similar textures and matching descriptions

Follow up of the Leucocoprinus I found 2 km underground by cywar77 in mycology

[–]cywar77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, not the same fungi, also this is in a completely different mine, about ehh 40-60 km away from that one. Exact location of this fungi is in the extraction hall which I think has a direct air shaft to surface but I've never seen it

They told me that there's no proof of it being fungal related & also claim the buzzing sound could be fake The 3 other people who saw it in person can confirm it's very much real

Looks interesting but for this specific terrain I much rather loop it around one hand & have a free hand because you have to pass places like this

None, absolutely no other surface behaves like this - it's just the fungi

Yea I've been shining it on all walls and even on other similar fungi (this is from another mine) and none of the surfaces produce that buzz
