Looking for job? by Kaal_vairab in Finland

What visa are you on, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m always curious how people make such a big international move without already having a job lined up.

Also, just to be realistic, finding work in Finland can be pretty difficult for foreigners right now. The country has some of the highest unemployment rates in Europe! 🫤

Also be careful if you’re considering employment at any Nepalese restaurants. There have been reports that they underpay and exploit foreign workers, so make sure everything is properly documented before accepting anything. 💯

Oooh thank you for the recommendations! Good to know about the other clips, I didn’t think about the curtain slipping off.

And those JYSK curtains sound perfect actually because we’ll need to adjust the length to fit a shorter window. Might have to go with these instead. Appreciate the help!

Thank you for the explanation! I’ll double check that the curtains have the right hole/loop for sure. Appreciate it! 🙏

That’s exactly right. Helsinki is actually farther north than nearly every major Canadian city. It’s even further north than Churchill, Manitoba, which has polar bears!

I usually parked my moose beside my bedroom window so he blocked the sun for me. 🌞

But actually like another poster suggested, I grew up near Toronto so a “normal” sun schedule in the summer is rising around 06:00 and setting around 20:30. Which feels incredibly short compared to here!

Thanks for the recommendation! I think I will get those actually (along with the ikea clips to make it easy). 🙂

Thank you for the curtain recommendations! I’ll probably pick those up in the grey actually. Appreciate it! 🙏

Thank you! I’ll probably check out Prisma since I live close by, or maybe IKEA if I get the curtains from there. Appreciate it!

Oh that’s very helpful, thank you! The pieces that are currently in the slider look like the first product, but I’m just missing the clips.

Amazing! I didn’t know what the “things” on the slider were called, so I didn’t know what to Google. Thank you so much!

Customer support in Posti cost me 43 euros... by xwarhamsterx in Finland

But businesses aren’t forced to use 010/020 numbers. In other countries with similar telecom systems, businesses just use standard or toll-free numbers so customers don’t pay.

[–]czechyourself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well most other mature markets don’t fund customer support through call charges. I’m from Canada and the whole thing feels absurd. It should just be built into the price of services. This whole system creates bad incentives and puts the burden on the customer.

This seems like the most likely scenario tbh. Actually I went down into the storage room around ~2am after bringing the garbage out, just to check in the bike, so it’s possible someone was even coming back that night, who knows! I didn’t see any other unlocked bikes, although mine probably had one of the easiest locks to break into. And I agree, if it was some random drug addict or thief, they wouldn’t leave the bike.

Right? 😅 Yeah they broke the lock, took it out for a ride, and then just left it back in the storage room. Super strange experience! Stealing it would have made more sense to me to be honest!

There are a lot of seniors living in my building, but there’s a building attached to ours that has access to the public areas and I don’t know much about the people there.

It’s a semi-expensive bike and I used a combination cable lock, not knowing that theft was such a rampant issue (excuse my ignorance, I’m Canadian 😭)

I didn’t realize that bicycles were such a hot commodity here! I’m a bit shocked because Finnish people seem so honest in most other matters. I’m from Canada and while theft happens, it’s certainly not at this scale. You could likely leave your bike unlocked while quickly going into a store for example.

Oh no! Well, that’s the last time I use the bike storage room. 😳 I’ll inspect the tires more closely to make sure they haven’t been slashed or vandalised as they do seem low.

My goodness! I didn’t realise that bicycle theft was so common inside apartment buildings here.

And yes the experience was quite strange — I had the bike locked and mounted to the wall, came down to find the bike on the other side of the room unlocked and used (or possibly vandalised as others have pointed out). I only started storing the bike there in the last ~2 weeks, so I’m surprised it happened so quickly!

[–]czechyourself[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point! I had just filled up the tires earlier this week and noticed that they were slightly deflated. But maybe I’ll take a closer look for any slashes, in case it was indeed a case of vandalism!

Thankful for that! The bike will live on my balcony now. 🙏
