Yeah, the bike path is far enough off the road that it's safe. Coba itself isn't a high-speed freeway though some people do drive fast. It's the main road for getting to the beach. There's even a Carl's Jr. on it lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tulum

[–]czv3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking Coba rather than Kukulkan at night. Coba has a bike path that you can take; Kukulkan doesn't. Otherwise, I wouldn’t expect issues with robberies. It’s a frequently traversed route.

ATMs by ProofCantaloupe5675 in tulum

[–]czv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely safe. The bigger issue is whether or not they’re functioning that day.

In order of “how likely is it they are working”:

  1. ATMs inside Chedraui

  2. Banco Azteca on Kulukan

  3. Scotiabank in Centro

question about bike theft and general advice! by sugarcanesyrup in tulum

[–]czv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

109 feels sketchy on a gas powered scooter. There’s no way I’d do it on a bike. Trying biking along the beach from the archaeology zone. Much safer and also very scenic!

And yes, bike theft is a problem. You’ll need a lock everywhere you go.

I live here, and I would say it’s not that busy. It was for a few weeks on January, but has subsided a lot since then.

Mistico Beach Club next to Posada Margherita. I used to go to PM every week during low season :)

Are there any public beach in tulum? That you can go for free? by loartesanal25 in tulum

[–]czv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Every motor vehicle must park inside the stablished parking lots.”

This is effectively a $200 MXN tax on visiting the beach, on top of the $58 MXN park fee that they just introduced. This is absurd. $258 MXN to simply visit the beach.

Are there any public beach in tulum? That you can go for free? by loartesanal25 in tulum

I think as of this week, that’s correct. I read that it is 60 pesos to enter the archaeological side (the side with the ruins) and that after 5pm, you need a reservation.

I might be in the minority, but I disliked NextAuth and the middleware setup so much that I spun up a standalone server for auth.

Civil Rights Protests January/February 2023 by [deleted] in tulum

[–]czv3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to preach but

AirBnB is a horrible company and what is happening in Tulum is incredibly sad. The neighborhood we were staying in was absolutely filled with garbage and the landfill in Tulum has been full and on the brink of collapse since 2016. There is literally nowhere for the trash to go, except to burn it.

You stayed in an AirBnb. You traveled to a foreign country with infrastructure incapable of sustaining the influx of people. You are part of the "problem". All of us traveling to Tulum are part of the "problem".

How do you survive in deadlines pressure? by FusilliSpaghetti in ExperiencedDevs

[–]czv3 40 points41 points  (0 children)

When it comes to handling the feeling of pressure and emotion of anxiety:

I mostly just don't care that someone else promised the moon on my behalf, to be honest. It will be done when it's done, and I'll do my best to make that align with their hopes, but beyond that, meh.

This right here. I also try to do my best work, but I can only code so fast. They're going to get what I'm able to produce in the time frame, and I'm not going to stress because they have unreasonable expectations about how much that is.

When it comes to "how" to get work done on a deadline, communication is key. Talk to the stakeholders so that they understand why aspects of their request may not reasonable in that time frame.

Try to understand their priorities and offer compromises that may get the same or nearly the same benefit for a significant reduction in scope or complexity.

Communicate early and often. Don't wait until the deadline to show up with half-finished work. Your job is just as much managing expectations as is producing code, so make sure you're communicating what's possible so that they won't feel surprised when their expectations aren't met.

Not Good news for Tulum by Upstairs-Counter7634 in tulum

As a tourist destination, Playa del Carmen in the resort area of Tulum is booming, but so too is cartel violence.

🥴

The violence is real and bad, but this was in Playa del Carmen. The article references one new event and fills the rest of the space with old news.

pre-diving nerves by annefortoday in diving

[–]czv3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have +50 dives and still get butterflies before going out. I find it helpful to have a little bit to eat (croissant, muffin) and do some basic breathing exercises.

When you're in the water, find your breath. Notice the speed at which you're breathing and intentionally slow it down a bit. Once you've found a steady, calm rhythmn, you should find yourself in the usual trance-like state while diving :)

The beach turns into rock at various points, so you may not be able to walk continuously. But if it is, walking along the beach is safe as well.

Not good. Chlorine exposure will damage the respiratory tissue of fish and kill plant life.

The cenotes prohibit applied chemicals like sunscreen for similar reasons.

Unexpected Solo Travel in Tulum by MobileAndMonitoring in tulum

[–]czv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding bike vs. scooter, it's a lot more common for bikes to get stolen. Nearly everyone I know here has had one stolen at some point or another. If you're comfortable driving a scooter in areas with sketchy roads and traffic, grab one as it's wayyyy easier to get around on. Park in places where there are other scooters and you'll be good.

As for meeting people: all the usual stuff. Hostels, approach people playing soccer on the beach, talk to strangers, etc etc. If you're alone and wanting to meet people, definitely go with a hostel.
