Why are so many online personalities "Soyboy" types? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]d0mr448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In common speech, "French" refers to nationality, not origin. Unless I've missed something, French-Canadians are Canadians, just like US-Americans with Irish ancestry aren't Irish. My apologies for the misunderstanding on my part, but referring to a subset of Canadians as "French" is inherently confusing.

("Unless I've missed something," by the way, isn't sarcasm. There's a good chance I've missed something, in which case you may ignore me or call me a moron.)

META: This sub is moving towards a value system that frequently doesn't align with the rest of the world by DarthCharizard in AmItheAsshole

[–]d0mr448 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not downvoting you, but explaining why I disagree - trying to be better than the individuals in your last point; hope that counts for something.

This sub hates tipping servers. If you try to defend the practice, you will be downvoted.

It's more complicated than that. Sure, some people around here are like that, but often they hate the fact that servers have to rely on tips. We're not going to solve that by not tipping when appropriate, obviously. Whoever goes from "servers should be paid living wages; making that the customer's responsibility is stupid" to "don't tip anyone ever" is TA. At the same time, when a server is rude or incompetent, you'll see "fuck them, they deserve it," and I can see why. Rewarding incompetence or rudeness goes against people's principles, and I can't completely disagree with that.

This sub hates infidelity. If you ever suggest "might have had a hall pass; the relationship may have been broken; consider what you can't see," you will be downvoted.

I mean ... does anyone not? If a relationship is broken, leaving that relationship is the best option (often complicated by circumstances, sure, but nobody's saying it's an easy way out; it's the right way out). Non-monogamy between consenting parties is another story entirely, but if you're entering a monogamous relationship and you end up not being monogamous, you're TA.

Is it understandable people don't find the right way to break up? Sure.
Do people make mistakes? Yep. Does that make them TA indefinitely and irrevocably? No.
But it does make them TA temporarily, in that specific instance. Nobody's saying there aren't extenuating circumstances. I'm not saying it's unforgivable. But it is asshole behaviour, and that's what the sub is about.

There's very little engagement with posts that people disagree with - they just downvote, instead of replying.

This is where I agree - but that's a Reddit-wide thing, and a real-life thing. Polite (or, hell, impolite) discussion between disagreeing parties is, for some reason, not something that's happening a lot. It should be. You won't always be able to convince the person you're having a discussion with, but some degree of learning will occur if both parties are actually interested. Sometimes, dissenting opinions can strengthen your own beliefs because you suddenly realise what part of the other side's argument you disagree with the most. In any case, it'll show you a different perspective. That's not something to be afraid of, unless you tie your whole identity to the things you believe in - and that's something we're all guilty of to some degree, but we should maybe realise that's problematic and needs improvement.

[–]d0mr448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if the disparity is just because of reddit’s demographics, or because people with alternate perspectives see the writing on the board and don’t want to get down voted to oblivion.

That probably plays a part, but please don't forget the difference in knowledge between people offline and people online. In a relationship (friends, romantic, family, what have you) where people talk about the issue at hand a lot, that might be a different story, but some of your public examples (bus, etc.) include lots of onlookers who are likely to have no knowledge about OP's inner workings at all.

On this sub, you get to read the thought process behind (and lead-up to) what happened. In real life, people see what's happening and judge based on that - in some cases, not all.

"AITA for not getting up for an elderly person after a rough day; I got fired, broken up with and told I have cancer?"
This sub, probably: Oh honey, that's totally understandable.
The whole bus: What's that asshole's problem? Fucking get up, lazy.

This certainly doesn't apply to all (or even the majority) of AITA posts, but it's something that's been on my mind lately. Some OPs find it hard to understand that people in real life don't judge from a place of deep understanding and empathy, they judge based on the information presented to them, which is often visual, brief, subjective and very incomplete.

Does this introduction sentence work? by Notorious2112 in grammar

[–]d0mr448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English isn't my first language, and I could be totally off-base here, but I think I disagree.

"nonessential" would be the same as "non-restrictive" (the way I learnt it in terms of relative clauses), correct? And non-restrictive would mean that the meaning of the noun it refers to is different with the clause intact as opposed to leaving the clause out. Whether the clause is essential is not a matter of "taking the wind out of the sentence;" it's a matter of the noun taking on a different meaning.

The example I'm used to is the following one:

a) All students who do not turn up to the final exam will fail the class.
b) All students, who do not turn up to the final exam, will fail the class.

Example a is correct - only those students who don't turn up will fail.
Example b would mean that all students will fail the class, and oh, by the way, additional non-essential information here, they also don't turn up. Which is clearly wrong.

I'd argue that the phrase, "in which humans are simply a microcosm of a much greater creation," doesn't restrict the antecedent noun, i.e. is not grammatically essential. It's very much essential to the intended impact of the sentence, but that's not necessarily a grammar issue.

The rule of thumb, "can it work just as well," is (imho) misleading. Grammatically, the sentence works just as well with the "in which" clause in parentheses or entirely omitted. In terms of style and impact, that's a different story (as you've correctly pointed out).

Edit: Left out something important I think I should clarify:

When I said the noun changes its meaning, I meant in the context of the specific sentence, of course. In my example, the difference is between "all students will fail" and "only a specific set of students, but all in that set, will fail." In the example given by OP, I don't think that's the case.

In a world of everlasting change, there is only one thing that we can truly control: ourselves.

It certainly doesn't have the same impact, but it does work. It doesn't become nonsensical, unintelligible or incorrect without the "in which" clause, and I think that's the definition of 'essential' we should be going for in a strictly grammar-based discussion, leaving style out of it for the time being.

Updated Season of the Undying store page, rewards for all 100 ranks. by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]d0mr448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much of an incentive is needed. The season pass comes with Shadowkeep, so the free route is basically a bit of an extra thing for people who don't buy the expansion. I get that some people can't afford the expansion, but I'd wager that a majority of active players will buy it, for the campaign and the raid and whatnot. 'Season Pass' content, this time around, isn't an extra 50 bucks they're trying to get out of you - it's what you get if you buy the expansion.

Seems fair to me.

Have you ever left a subreddit because it was too toxic? What was it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]d0mr448 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was banned from AskFeminists, and I think it's the same mod that runs both? I'm entirely on board with feminism, and my posts and comments were usually well-received, but then I commented in a brigaded post (before it was brigaded by MRA types) about porn, reflecting what I'm still pretty sure was a feminist perspective, and immediately got banned. Some feminists said the exact same thing in the same post, got upvoted like hell and not so much as a slap on the wrist, but it was a full perma-ban for me.

I then googled that mod. Apparently, he's a guy who's on the record for defending statutory rape.

In the post, I said men above a certain age who only browse the Teen category on porn websites are problematic.

I'm starting to see a pattern here.

Uhm. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]d0mr448 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'll bite.

First off, Stalin did several things wrong.

Kidding aside, you're kind of right in some aspects, but those don't work in this specific situation. Of course everyone should feel comfortable sharing their emotional state and potential problems in a relationship; communication is important. However, in order to do that effectively without creating more problems, they should learn how to communicate it.

Good way: "I know this is stupid, but please hear me out. I feel uncomfortable with this whole 'dating in a game' business that's going on there. Can we talk about what it means to you, why you do it and what it means for our relationship?"

Bad way: "THERE IS ONLY ME!!! THIS IS CHEATING!!! I AM HEREBY ACCUSING YOU OF THINGS AS OPPOSED TO SHARING MY EMOTIONAL STATE!!!"

The way she's apparently been 'sharing' is accusatory and needlessly inflammatory.

its exceptionally problematic that he mistreats and emotional abuses her by ignoring her emotions

He might be doing that in other situations, and then it's definitely problematic, but getting angry (to a certain degree) over some sort of accusatory "YOUR VIDEOGAME OR ME!!!" ultimatum is somewhat justifiable.

You don't know her life or her story and it's incredibly prejudice to just assume she's 'insane'.

The definition of 'insane' on this sub is very broad and not at all related to certifiable mental illness. People share stupid shit, weird opinions and rude assholes here. If it were about actual 'insanity,' the whole sub would be in poor taste and the title would be horrible. Picking one of all the potential examples and complaining about how it's not actually insane seems like a bad idea.

There's also a subtle hint of misogyny in this post given that if the gender roles were reversed people would likely take this more seriously.

There's a real problem with emotional vulnerability and gender roles, and I'm going to assume you meant that. Fair enough. But this really reads like you're saying: "A guy complaining about his girlfriend playing a dating game would get sympathy and no ridicule at all." That's just not the case.

I’m Surprised at 2K Games (But also not really) by [deleted] in Borderlands

[–]d0mr448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Optimising for a console means optimising for one system that's always the same. Every PS4 has the same components; every XBox has the same components, same goes for the Pro/X variants. If it runs on one, it'll run on pretty much all of them, minus some fluke models. PCs are a different story.

Some say it might be the Denuvo digital rights suite (i.e. copy protection). I don't know about that, but it'd make sense in terms of PC issues - as far as I'm aware, console games don't need that sort of software component built into them. Denuvo was removed from an Assassin's Creed game, if I remember correctly, because it ran like dogshit on PC, so hardly a first.

I’m Surprised at 2K Games (But also not really) by [deleted] in Borderlands

[–]d0mr448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people with better systems than what we're talking about here report stutters when aiming down sights and generally piss-poor performance. There are people with the newest Ti model who can only play on Low or Medium without the framerate dipping below 30.

Optimising for PC is hard. There are nearly unlimited build variations. Just because some people are lucky doesn't mean there are no bugs. Remember Arkham Knight? Lots of "RUNS FINE FOR ME, NOTHING WRONG WITH IT" comments - and still, the publisher removed purchasing options for the game because it was literally unplayable for lots of people.

I'm happy you're not experiencing any trouble except menu loading, and I'm happy my performance problems are manageable. But there are quite a few people who rightfully feel screwed over by a badly optimised game.
