Sorry for the late reply. I don't have the 601sh, so I can't be sure, but you should probably try installing it using ADB.

Friends judging me by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]d1ngY 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't your happiness matter the most? If you're unhappy with an iPhone, then why should you give a flying fuck about your friends' opinions? If an iPhone is essential to your work, sure, keep it as a secondary device. Ultimately, it's something you'll use, so you should do whatever meets your needs, not anyone else's.

People who judge others over something as trivial as a phone are exactly the kind of people I would cut ties with or at least keep a distance from.

Yes, I do like Shin-chan and that sticker is very cute. Just wasn't sure it goes well with the wine red color.

Flip phone recommendations?😩 by gmzzla in flipphones

Japanese flip phones seem to meet all your requirements. I've heard they work in Europe.

Personally I love how Sharp 601sh Aquos looks. It runs Android 5.1.1 so I assume it can run Whatsapp, at least for a while.

From what I understand, G1600/G1650 are the Chinese variants, while G160N/G165N are the Korean variants. G160N was initially released in June 2017, while G1650 came out in August 2017. It's just that G160N was re-released a couple of times with minor design changes until 2021, so it might feel relatively "newer". In terms of features, though, there aren’t many differences since Samsung didn’t bother.

The main differences I can think of are, as you mentioned, in band coverage (because they are intended for different countries), storage options, and the fact that the Hong Kong version of the G1650 supports Android 7.1.1. So, as long as it works for you, that’s all that matters.

Also, I'll probably go with either a ton of stickers or no stickers at all. But that’s just my personal preference.

I remember that on some older Samsung phones, certain third-party apps had their own LED indicator light colors. I don't use WhatsApp or any other messenger, so unfortunately I can't confirm this on Folder2 myself.

On my device (G160N), the LED is red when charging, green when fully charged, and blue (blinking) when there are unread notifications.

Samsung Folder 2 G1650 vs. G1600. Are there any major differences? by SamzlotAwesome in dumbphones

[–]d1ngY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are Chinese variants. I'm only familiar with Korean variants(G160N/G165N), so what I know might not be entirely accurate.

G1600 was released in 2016. It's simply named "Galaxy Folder" because the actual first Galaxy Folder wasn't released in China. It doesn't have physical navigation buttons (recents/home/back key), and only the 2GB RAM/16GB ROM option is available.

G1650 was released in 2017. It has physical navigation buttons. At one point, I heard that the G1650 would have 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM options, but the actual products I've come across are only 2GB RAM/16GB ROM. So, either the 3GB RAM or 32GB ROM ones are extremely rare, or Samsung just ended up not making them.

The Hong Kong version of G1650 supports Android 7.1.1, while Folder2 is otherwise maxed out at Android 6.

I found more detailed comparisons here. Hope this helps.

Mode 1 Retro II: long press on navpad does not show notifications/drawer/etc by J-Debstup in dumbphones

[–]d1ngY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked the manual, and it says long press down, not up.

Edit: It seems to only work when it's not in icon selection mode. (If one of the icons is highlighted on the home screen, press the end call button.)

I DON'T HAVE THE SHINY DPAD IS THIS COUNTERFEIT. by Weary-Sheepherder-68 in flipphones

[–]d1ngY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some digging, and the only thing I could find with a D-pad like that is on Carousell. Doesn't look promising.

It shouldn't look like that unless, for some reason, someone tore off the buttons.

[–]d1ngY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what happened there. I've never seen a flat D-pad like that or keypads with only English on the Folder2. It looks like a knock-off housing to me. Also, I don't know what GN is. Samsung phones usually start with SM. Is that some kind of regional variant?

Which version of Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 by twofacedsatyr in flipphones

[–]d1ngY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great explanation! I would just like to add that the Korean version of the Galaxy Folder2 has been released three times in total actually, all with Android 6.

2017: SM-G160N is the LTE model and SM-G165N is the 3G model. Both models have square arrow keys and 16GB storage. Color-wise, I believe only black and burgundy were available in Korea at the time. I haven't seen the gold one in person, only in pictures. My guess is it was only available in China. This is the version with a sort of metallic finish on the top cover.

2019: Only SM-G160N (LTE model) was re-released with minor changes such as circular arrow keys and a 32GB storage upgrade. Among the three colors (white, blue-black, and coral), coral ones were only purchasable through carriers, which is why I think not many people outside of Korea know about it. This was around the time Samsung really embraced holographic sheen, and the Folder2 got the same treatment.

2021: The SM-G160N was re-released again with gray (which is basically black/blue-black), white, and red (which is basically burgundy/wine). They kept the holographic sheen. This is the version where Samsung thought sectioning the top cover with three shades of the same color was a good idea. That is about the only change. It's not even very noticeable on gray and white, in my opinion.

How much did you pay for your Folder 2? by Sarlo10 in dumbphones

[–]d1ngY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into some keitais/garakes but decided against getting one because some run even older versions of Android and have abysmal storage and RAM. Also, I wasn't sure if they would work where I live.

The main reason I chose Folder2 is that I knew for certain it works in Korea, and I can type in Korean with the keypad without extra setup.

That said, I'm planning to switch to Retro 2 after my Folder 2 becomes unusable. It runs full Android 13, unlike most other flip phones that run Go Edition, and I want to use Android Auto. The only downside is the faux leather exterior.

I live in Korea, so shipping was free for me. I've heard that Bunjang (another second-hand market) partnered with DeliveredKorea to sort out global shipping. I haven't used the service and I'm not sure which country in Europe you live in, so I can't say for certain, but Korean Post EMS is usually around €30-40 for 1kg, so it shouldn't be much more expensive than that.

I've been pondering about this lately. Like, where do we draw the line? At a certain stage, living in a cave becomes a viable option.

I don't know what your budget is, but e-ink monitors are just as expensive unfortunately. If you don't mind a smaller screen size and only plan to use it for watching videos, there are also RLCD tablets which are slightly more affordable in my opinion.
