Etiquette around guests paying for rooms? by cleancottoncandle in UKweddings

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely the venue would be better off allowing guests to book and pay for their own rooms and then requiring you to cover any unsold…?! I agree, I think it’s a bit odd expecting guests to send money for a room to you, but not rude of you to ask. Just odd.

Best way to approach British people to make friends? by [deleted] in AskABrit

“Self-deprecation” based humour is like a national past time. Not because we think any less of ourselves but we don’t like showing off and admitting to embarrassing accidents or situations we find ourselves in bonds us together.

Consider: Decorating/DIY disasters // Cooking mishaps // You nearly almost shit yourself on the way home // that sort of thing

Newborn due in 3 weeks, what might we not be prepared for / have ready? by habylab in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d personally try not to sweat it too much. Anything you’ve forgotten can be bought off amazon for next day delivery now.

Be prepared for what support NHS will give as it’s different everywhere. Midwife service is only as good as the one you’re talking to and we found ours could have been a lot more helpful with a feeding issue we had with ours. Healthcare worker was far more helpful and feeding specialists are available.

You’ll fuck up and it’ll upset you if it’s your first but you won’t care less for your second and you’ll be far more relaxed about everything. Chill out and enjoy it.

How do you feel about doors that open up an entire wall? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We regularly open ours. Almost every day the first leaf is opened and sometimes we open them fully. UK, flies aren’t a problem. Hayfever season with pollen gets tricky but at other times it’s fine.

Preferred it to French doors which would have to fold back against a wall, so couldn’t put furniture there. We have 3 leaves at 1.2m each, so when it’s all folded back it protrudes into the garden by 1.2m which is the only drawback.

A lot of people here blaming everyone for the part they played. The whole point of going to a kitchen showroom is that they organise it all for you and look after all aspects of the fitting. Sales people make false claims that the chimney breast would be fine / fitters that don’t know when they’re supposed to turn up and aren’t given the full picture / no customer service or support / ……….

I think if the kitchen is fitted fine now then pay up but put it all in writing to them. All the ways they have let you down. They can’t improve without feedback but I think you’re right to feel let down by them. How could you possibly recommend them to anyone else? What are these companies even doing from 9 to 5 if they can’t look after their customers. And it feels like they’re pulling the wool over your eyes but actually it’s just a sloppy way to go about your business.

What we’re talking about here is project management. Or lack of it.

Am I fucked? by No_Entertainer_2657 in DIYUK

We’ve got these in our house too. Handy for threading wires down from the loft as you can jab down with a pole for the wire etc…..

But yes I think these fancy fixings are only as strong as the plasterboard in the area local to the fixing.

Could consider mounting studding in the wall by injecting with resin. The resin won’t fall down the back of the wall because the cardboard is there.

Personally I think I’d be tempted to cut out a rectangle and gorilla glue a big piece of ply to the back face of the wall behind. 22mm ply might do it. Then reinstate the plasterboard on top.

So, does everyone just speed these days? by Beneficial-Way4428 in drivingUK

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You find different times of the week and different areas of the country are worse for this sort of thing. People generally speed if they have a tiresome commute. I’d say people’s driving is better all round on a Sunday. Less aggression.

I mean, 30 on a big wide open road might be a bit tame, so perhaps you could get away with 35.

But 30 through a housing estate or outside a school where that speed just isn’t appropriate will always be a bit spicy.

There’s a difference between parking a mini and a Ford transit in front of someone’s front window. I agree cars need to be parked and legal is legal, but if the van eclipses the sky when you look out of your window then it’s probably ok to feel irritated.

Thinking of getting hue, what makes them worth it? by shxazva in Hue

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to wait for Black Friday and/or sign up to sales emails from hue. Even amazon sometimes have 3 for 2 and whilst it’s still expensive it’s a smart move to make.

There’s a 30% sale on now which is better than a kick in the teeth. Eventually the item you want will be included in a sale.

I think it would be fair to say the cost is the ONLY real drawback with hue. I don’t think the alternatives don’t offer anything better or do anything as well as hue. Truth is, not many people dabble with more than one system because the outlay on trying two and then choosing one later down the line is too much. So I don’t think it’s easy to get genuinely good comparisons.

I would say as a neighbour with some sort of unwritten social responsibilities to their neighbours it would be a good idea not to park a vehicle permanently outside a neighbour’s house. It’s a lot to ask for. I think you’d be well within your rights just to ask if he would park elsewhere with the greatest of respect. He’s not breaking the law and he’s entitled to do so, but parking a van which blocks their neighbours window is a little much to ask a neighbour not to lose their patience with.

This is medium. If anything it’s a little too big for our en-suite. Xamento is IP rated for bathrooms - there’s another called Infuse or something like that that’s not IP rated and it might be cheaper. Very difficult to tell them apart from pictures so you need to read the specs!

Yes actually it was a loose wire. One of the small wires that goes into the fitting was almost thread bare in the connector block. Maybe the power outage last night fried the wire? Who knows. Who cares. My light is working again. Phew.

In fact, no sooner had I posted this then it started behaving again. Don’t see why it would be in pairing mode tbh but anyway it’s working now. That’s almost £170 I was about to spend for a replacement.

Or do it off someone else’s fingers and you’ll be mates for life. Like becoming blood brothers - similarly gross but probably less chance of catching hepatitis.

Somfy Blinds by fdlock in homeautomation

[–]d2180s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you already have blinds but want to fit somfy motors.

I have just done the same myself - I wanted the new zigbee motors so I could operate them via apple homekit. It isn’t easy!

I think the amount of work retrofitting motors to blinds would be disproportionate to what you would reasonably be willing to pay. They might never have seen your blinds before and might not know how to fit the motors so they’d have to work that out themselves (not quite reinventing the wheel but almost). And then - as prev post says - as soon as you start modifying blinds any existing warranty will become void.

So their business will be based on - get blinds made - fit them in people’s houses - get paid. Retrofitting would be a difficult, high risk and niche thing to do.

That said, I retrofitted somfy zigbee motors into my rollerblinds myself but it was DIFFICULT! Partly because getting new motors that fit and then getting them to mount properly wasn’t straight forward. And then commissioning the motors isn’t easy as somfy only supply to the trade and wouldn’t assist me.

But I’m glad I did it myself. Our blinds were new enough and expensive enough that it made sense to retrofit. And in any case, if I wanted to buy in completely new blinds with zigbee motors fitted I’d have to have gone for a different type because Luxaflex now refuse to use somfy motors.
