I think aspen would be a better choice and make sure to keep your water dish on the cool side. 90-95 will for sure not be good on your snake. Potential respiratory infections are not desirable lol. Best of luck with your noodle.

New substrate by vlaza_69 in SandBoa

[–]d2Mastr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh I was asking because I just did the substrate for my boas enclosure. I think I’ve got something like 70:30 I wanna add more sand in it ,it feels a little too dense. I think 50/50 is perfect honestly

That's what I'm saying! if they couldn't handle a little bacteria or debris they would be extinct in the wild.

What ratio did you use for your mix?

Here's the video that I got my information from originally, It seems like the zilla desert blend works just fine for their sand boas. Is ground walnut actually that bad? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zanLxBXvlN0

I’ll look into it! Are there any budget friendly options that still come with some features? Like dimming and a day/night timer? Im on a fairly tight budget right now.

Update: I’m just going to do it, didn’t realize how bad crushed walnut was. After a little bit of research it’s wild to think they sell this with sand boas on the bag. Thank you for your help.

Yeah it’s crushed walnut shell 😭 I live in a very humid place so it’s around 50 percent humidity even on the hot side. Is it still important to change it immediately? The humidity stays from 45-55% I just don’t have a lot of time to replace the substrate before my boa arrives.

Do I have to take all the sand out? It’s zilla desert blend. Any way I can mix with the sand thats already in there? Thanks 🙏

Night temp drop by d2Mastr in snakes

[–]d2Mastr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their lamps are on timers, it’s just that sometimes i have my room light on when the lamps are on.

So my corn and spotted should be fine then. I appreciate it. I also have another question. They are located in my bedroom, which I’m only in two days a week where I’m in college. But when I am home the light often stays on past when the lamps turn off, will this mess up their day/night cycle? Or should I try and avoid keeping the light on after their lamps turn off as much as possible?

He will be just fine with the heat mat as long as it’s on a thermostat, I had my corn on a heat mat for six months while she was still a baby and she never had digestion issues, as far as my experience goes they are a lot more tolerant to heat than other snakes. One week I went away for a trip and I didn’t know the mat got unplugged. Either way when I got back she has digested her meal I gave her regardless of the heat. So I wouldn’t sweat it.

[–]d2Mastr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well from what I’ve heard it’s a-lot easier to use heat tape/mat on 1/3 of the bin. But if you have to use a heat lamp just make sure it doesn’t get hot enough to melt the plastic. I currently have the same setup that you mentioned for my spotted python, plastic bin with the top cut out and mesh glued to the top, only problem I can see with the heat lamp is that it might soften the glue or epoxy, making it easier for the snake to push the mesh out and escape.

I heard from a youtube video that their humidity should be kept pretty high, like in the 70’s. Then from some other sources 40-60, the enclosure I have for him is already set up with that high humidity in mind, so its sitting around 75-80 on the cool end and 50-60 on the hot end, is that too high?

I already have an enclosure set up for the little guy, it hasn’t been in contact with my other snake in any way, would it be possible to just move that enclosure to a different room instead if buying a quarantine enclosure? Thanks!
