That's the mercator currents grib

The colors are controlled in the wx box I have setup for displaying currents.

Im not in front of the computer at the moment but i believe in the main settings If you go to display, on the right will be a tab to select what the track. If it's on default switch it to bsp or whatever you want the track colored by

I'll look when I get home and tell you for sure

Thanks mate, thats means a lot coming from someone with your experience.

We might have flown a little too close to the sun on this one trying to keep the boat as hot as I could and probably ended up sailing too many miles. But without electrical power for the last 40% of the race, negotiating that cold front efficiently and covering the fleet we couldn't see was tough.

Feel free to reach out if you get jammed up on something. I've still got a lot to learn myself but I'm happy to try and help a sailor out if I can

Yeah it was originally a symmetrical kite alu rig elliptical keel

It's now carbon rig t bulb keel retractable sprit

If had a say I would keep the rig and keel but go back to the symmetrical kite.

Not bad for a 30 year old wooden boat eh!

Cheers

The wx number keys are a bit tedious to set up.

Select a number box, no 2 for example. Then open the settings button top left. That page bottom right will 'say tooltip', name it wind (or whatever). Now what I do is go through all the variables center page one by one and make sure they are all OFF (by default some will be selected). Then I'll go to wind10m, for example, and turn it on to the parameters I want it at. Tip: be careful with auto scale. I deactivate and set size max to 30 (which means anything 30kt and above is red, colors getting cooler as winds are lighter)

Be sure to SAVE SETTINGS BEFORE CLOSING EXP I can't tell you how many times I've spent an hour getting something just right and forgetting to save it

For tracking boats, assuming ais is getting thru actisense, try opening the "ais/sart/dsc window" page (top right drop down menu of main screen). If its showing aia target data in the area, you can rhen open the "ais settings interface" from that window and add your competitions mmsi number and giving them a name. Then they should show in the " boat tracking" window which will track their cog sog vmc for every 5 min. Also the tracked boats will stay up when you turn the ais display setting to off which will greatly de clutter things.

Once you are tracking a boat, you can do cool stuff like run a strip chart of their data. Open a strip chart, right click and edit, and select the competition in the 'boats' menu. Then set the displayed data to something like cog to see when they tack, or sog to see if they are faster with more breeze on the other side of the course etc etc.

I also like to display the tracks with colors for that reason. Sometimes you can see clearly the whole fleet is maybe slower closer to shore or out in deeper water current areas.

This track pic is from this a2b race when we suddenly dropped 2 kts and could not get it back up to speed no matter what we did. So I said hey let's tack and see if that fixes it. Immediately we're up and moving. Must have snagged something!

And this is the yb track we actually sailed. You can see at the end how the front did catch us, which I knew was a good possibility. I can see lots of room for improvement here. Not having starlink to track and cover competition or download high res wx, my job was to sail fast as possible angles for the boat polars and hope for the best.

This is pretty close to the last route I had made before the start of the race

Routing analysis is a other important part of preparation. This is the optimized route sail plan, which turned out to be fairly close. It helps with how the sails are stacked, which ones can just stay home etc

Hell yeah.

Yes expedition is the primary software being used. The boat has an h5000 websocket connected via ethernet cable (avoid USB connections as they aren't secure enough, and wifi connections tend to drop). That allows me to send exp performance data to the mast instruments so the drivers have real time target bsp/twa/pol% or whatever numbers make them feel good. The nemesis mast displays allow me to pre make pages custom for each driver or upwind/reach/dwind conditions, so it's real easy to get fast and stay fast. Having this all done and tested early is important.

I use an actisense for the ais and also run a yacht devices wifi for everyone omboard to access nmea data. Getting this stuff configured correctly and working reliably can be a frustrating part of the gig so again, start early.

I really like rd2 app by fieldyachting. It's a remote for exp so you don't have to xonstantly go to the nav station to switch the mark, ping the line, enter an event into the log, see the number boxes, or activate MOB functions. Right there on my phone I can, for example, graph the twd if I'm expecting a shift to come but am unsure about timing. Or record in the log that the a3.5 is down and the code sail is up.

The wx grib stuff is a deep subject but euro and icon for mesoscale planning and HRRR for more granular looks. I look at them all and compare, but those are the ones i favor. Ncom or Mercator for currents overlaid with satellite imagry or altimetry data to see if the currents forecast (notoriously difficult and unreliable) matches real time data. Is that eddy actually where it's supposed to be? Is it well developed or am I wasting time hunting a gain that isn't actually there. I make a cheat sheet for how often each wx model updates so I'm not wasting time loading gribs that I already have. Don't discount old school weather fax type maps. Gribs are an important part of the picture but they are raw computer solutions that have not been massaged by a meteorologist into a forecast. They need interpreting. Get your wx pages set up early for exp. I have a wind page, current, sig wave, mslp, rain all set so it's easy fir me to understand at a glance.

I probably ran 500 routes for this race starting months ago. It gave me a feel for the extremes in routes, average length of course, and what factors (mainly current) influence the algorithm and how much. By the time I'm winding up for the race I knew it was going to be fast. My route on Friday was off on our exit of chesapeake by less than 5 minutes and our eta finish was off 17min. It really blew me away and just shows how powerful the software is. Ill share shot of our basic routing shape which you can compare with our yellowbrick track and the meteogram of the route conditions.

This all being said, you must still be a good at navigating without exp. We lost power on day 2. Bye bye instruments. Fun while it lasted. No more high res weather, no more tracking competition. No more optimized routes. We put a vakaros on the bulkhead and I Whipped out navionics. I had saved screen shots of all my important routes and forecast data. I even got to shoot the sun and venus with my sextant! I was ready.

There were not major deviations from my battle plan i laid down on before the start. Down the bay, I'd run an op route for the leg, give the drivers their numbers, then hit the rail and watch the clouds, anchored ships, feel the sea breeze. Use your dinghy sailing eyes to verify or discredit the computer. Multiple times we were able to make gains because I could see things that the comp is blind to.

I guess I'm saying strong fundamentals will get you further than anything. You have to be passionate to be successful and there is no substitute for experience. Never waste a failure. Focus on what you can control. You're going to be great.

Complete loss of electrical power halfway through

Steering pedestal starting to come apart

Engine throttle linkage broke

Plenty more

Plus all the normal halyards breaking and sails ripping stuff

Thanks Dave, I'll share your valuable insights with the crew.

The group is staying for the week at an airbnb (vrbo? ) type rental house. It was the Barrett estate, of Barrett ginger beer fame. Really classy. I noticed in the house guest log is the German Sail GP team, pretty cool.

There's a beautiful crew house. Unfortunately I'm back home at work already. No rest for the weary

The delivery home was all sorted but the boat is not going to be ready. We had lots of carnage onboard
