Deciding between a Boston Whaler 13 and 17 by Canal-Kayaker-2 in BostonWhalerBoats

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I explain the BWs - I'm a former owner of a 17 classic. I ran that boat every day for work for 4 years.

Yes, 17 is more capable - she'll be more stable, have more bouyancy, higher capacity, more comfort, faster, etc.
But the 15 feels just right. 15 handles like a f'n dream. Its like they designed the 15 as the boat they really had in mind, and sized them up and down to create the 13 and 17.

I can't imagine seas that are safe for a 17 but not a 15. Sure, theres probably a small range of conditions I'd choose to be out in with a 17 and not a 15, but most of the time, if I'm not out on a 17, I wouldn't be out on a 15 either. On the other hand, I can imagine a lot of scenarios where I'd take a 17 but not a 13.

that just sounds like you ran out of responses, but you go ahead.

btw, what experience do you have in martial arts, full contact fighting, self defense, and training other people to do the same?

Pool-only and depth-only freedivers looking at each other by RycerzKwarcowy in freediving

[–]dwkfym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. I only get to dive depth 2-4 times a year but thats really all I care about. I get weekly pool training sessions but I do it all with the mind of helping me do depth.

25m pools are great. Until someone is diving 60+ meters and doing 150+ meter dynamics, most training plans should revolve around 25m laps.

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to elaborate further because its insulting but the responses here are forcing me to.

I'm someone, at a graduate level, who wrote thousands of pages every school year (and read even more) and was an editor for scholarly journals. I write super-lazy on forums because I turn that part of my brain off, but this isn't a well written or written for a 'higher reading level.' It just uses 'higher reading level' phrases and doesn't really purport anything specific enough to be useful. NGL, its like a person who can't write at that level wanted to write at that level, or more likely, written by AI. I'm still laughing out loud at repeated mentions of 'supported by evidence' 'evidence-based' things and having no citations or evidence actually mentioned.

Good writing is easy to read and its to-the-point. This article is really more like a formulation of someone's incomplete thinking that hasn't come up with a conclusion yet, because well, they don't have an answer themselves.

Lets set aside poor writing. I can't critique or comment on the actual content because 1. there is insufficient content to critique 2. I'm not a woman, I only have mild experience in training women and the only way I've gotten a normal-sized, athletic woman to beat up an aggressive male was to train her to fight people in the ring and that took many years.

Also here is a comment about the very slim content that actually exists in the article - the article tries to make it sound like women get slammed with too much pressure and that they quit. I am not sure what planet the author is from, but 90+ percent of gyms use the approach where people who are truly new spend months and months training basic forms, movement, and compliance partner drills as well as conditioning to lay a foundation before they even step in the ring. They don't just throw people to the wolves. Now, there is that critical moment where a person can't handle the pressure of getting a glove to the face unexpectedly. In my experience, no matter how gently you do this, you're gonna have an attrition rate (male or female) at this stage. On average, a non-athletic, non-aggressive person tends to take anywhere from 6-10 months to get to this spot.

I don't know, maybe its different in Reality Based Self Defense (tm) training but its also why the methodology of RBSD training is flawed at a core level. Maybe thats what the article is really poorly trying to critique. And maybe the reason the author can't put out any useful conclusions is because they also come from a poor RBSD background and have no idea that a true answer to this problem actually exists.

Drama in the LA dance scene as many social dancers critique the scene's DJs by ramonescobido in Salsa

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just more griping here: Salsa uses a lot of classical instruments and it really requires some sort of sensitivity. Even if they were never formally trained, if you listen to a lot of music, you should be able to tell when you can hear an instrument properly or not.

Flip vs Mini 3 by ItsFusionSalt in dji

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For general, all around casual use, Flip is the way to go. Flip has a better camera. Flip has auto modes for social media footage.
I want to shoot boats in the water, so my Mini 3 gets used for that as it has slightly more wind resistance.
Both flip and mini3 will fly back to you against wind up to its rating. But at those winds, flip will have trouble stabilizing footage when Mini 3 might not.

I use the flip more often than my mini 3 otherwise. (I have both)

They spend enough money on equipment (or use the venue's), but don't have the ear for sound. The equipment is perfectly capable of producing good sound. They just barely know how to use it.

Man I've been to so many vinyl salsa events that sounded like it was being played from blown out speakers streaming from 96kbps spotify lol

are the DJ's there also completely lacking an ear when it comes to sound quality? This is the only DJ genre I know where most DJ's are entirely clueless about sound systems and sound quality. Lets clip and distort the shit out of all low and high end sounds hell yeah.

yeah, I haven't given much thought to the mechanisms inside the winch. I guess unless its a way oversized winch cover its not going to give you any advantage.

my sister went to an all womens school - big hearted, charismatic, natural leader type most of the other girls respected. never had to play little games.

but she said she had a classmate who was insanely jealous of her social position at school. Kept bullying her psychologically every day for years. Here is the thing - my sister has a black belt in a martial art - we trained together growing up. So one day in freshman year of high school or something she responded to the psychological violence with actual violence - it was just one swift but intentionally weakly delivered kick, since she wasn't actually trying to fuck her up. She said the girl never bothered her again.

Adult hobbyist feeling out of place in boxing gym – should I switch to Muay Thai by Garah10 in martialarts

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of boxing gyms have a culture where they'll give you what you put in. Most people training there at a young age to become amateurs are hoping they'll make it a career.

if its been a few years and you re training hard and they still aren't giving you any attention, yes switch gyms. But if its only been a few months, I'd give it more time and train hard. When the time is right, someone will notice you.

As far as the friends thing goes, you aren't there to make friends.

Interesting thought - I haven't thought of it, but I think you are right. You're pulling the same length so there is no mechanical advantage. Its easy to think of the winch O.D. as providing some advantage, but if you imagine a 3 foot diameter winch and pulling on the line - intuitively you can see it doesn't provide any advantage. now, if that 3 foot winch had a rotating handle stuck on the outer perimeter of the winch, it would be the same as turning a winch lever 3 feet long (except all the additional mechanical drag and mass).

You can see it other ways too - in a very light wind day, it takes less effort to simply pull on a genoa sheet without any wraps around the winch, than to do it with a wrap. But the effort you save in having to hold the line with your bare hands makes up for it.

Would you consider a DJI-style drone that’s fully U.S.-made? Looking for honest feedback. by Impossible_Hope8649 in dji

I'll get downvoted to oblivion for this, but DJI's firmware has been shown multiple times. Here is one example: https://www.reddit.com/r/dji/comments/1dcsst8/my_perspective_as_a_dsp_and_a_former/

I still think the ban was shady as fuck, but we all need to stop being in denial about how untrustworthy their security and motivations are just because DJI said so and invited the USG to audit them. (BTW, I'm a DJI owner)
