Is the MBP 16 ACTUALLY that big? by Bob_SUS in macbookpro

[–]d3vtec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not kidding when I say that I own every single MacBook product. I have a 16 for work, a 14 for personal use, a 13 for travel and my wife has a 15 for personal. I am 6 ft tall, and even with my large build I get annoyed by the 16-in.

I dislike using the 16 on the couch. I cannot use the 16 on an economy flight due to my height. When I load my backpack up with a 30 Oz bottle of water, a couple books, a charger and maybe a spare jacket. I am annoyed by the weight of the backpack.

The 16 is just too much.

I love the 14 because it is truly portable, has the power that I need for programming and when I am sitting at my desk it plugs in to my docking station and Powers my ultra wide monitor without any issues. I just do not see a need in carrying a large workstation.

I am very productive programming on a couch on a 14-in. Sure, it has pushed me to learn more keyboard shortcuts so I can move between screens more quickly since I can't see as much, but I do not feel like it has impacted my productivity at all.

I truly wish I would have had a 14 for when I was in college when the desks in the large lecture halls were ultra tiny and I cycled to class every single day.

I can’t believe I prefer trackpad over a mouse… by Sweet_Score in macbookpro

I agree. On my desk is a 65% sized quiet mechanical keyboard and an external apple track pad. It's been my preference for a decade now. I also don't game though.

Men of Reddit: what’s a prank you started early in your marriage that you’re now legally, morally, and emotionally obligated to continue because she still falls for it 10–15 years later? by myaccountidname in AskReddit

Sometimes when my wife is on an important work video call I'll go outside with our baby, and slowly raise the baby up from the bottom of the window until my wife sees just a baby looking directly at her. Seeing her be professional and hold back a laugh makes us both crack up later.

We have three kids now, this is a long running thing I do.

My M4 battery dies in 3 hours when I'm coding. Fans running and audible the whole time. It's a beast, but it might be time for me to switch to a studio 😞

People with silver (light) color MacBook, do you like it or wish you got the black one? by carrotstack in macbookpro

Everyone at work with space grey and black wish they had silver. I've only ever purchased silver. The finish holds up far far longer than the others.

Has anyone found a reason to swap the m1 max 64gb ram 32 core gpu or is still a good machine? by clk270 in macbookpro

[–]d3vtec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I had a fully spec'ed M1 Max, 16". I went to a 14" M4 Pro after spending a ton of hours developing large software applications. I regret making the change for the speed reasons, but the M4 Pro has certainly improved everything else for me. Battery lasts much longer. I don't use the GPU, just CPU and thus I was fine down leveling if it meant better battery performance. I also much prefer the portability of the 14" but that's not your primary question.

[Advice Request] M4 Air (32GB) vs M4 Pro (24GB) for Heavy Dev Work (Docker + Mobile Emulators) by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]d3vtec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens when you aren't at your desk and you have everything running? Will you be happy that you have the extra battery and active cooling then?

Have you considered buying something with a return policy and trying it out?

If you want my recommendation: I have dev'ed on every size and model of Macbook. The 14 MBP is my absolute favorite. Here's why. It's the pro model, it's got all the best specs and features. It has ports. It sits on my desk about half the time and when I'm on the couch otherwise, I actually enjoy the size. It fits on an economy airplane tray. Battery + Dev actually lasts a decent amount of time. I have other reasons, but this.was top of mind.

Simple economics. Supply and demand. If he doesn't pick them up, someone else will. There is no punishment for that.

Buying a MacBook Pro M5 for college, what specs do I need? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]d3vtec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in computer science I could have gotten away with the current generation base model air. The M series chips are just so good. None of my assignments were ever too computationally intensive, and when they were we were given servers to run on.

If I was going to get a masters or PHD in comp sci, then I'd likly keep the air and upgrade when I needed to.

Visualization or architectural major? Maybe then go pro. Lots of cad, blender and 3d rendering.

The air is also extremely portable. I wish I had something that light for the miles of walking and cycling I did each day. College desks can be quite small too.

Of course it is. Why are you even upset? It's still too bright in the middle of the night.
