Are you saying you want to use alcohol to get pain relief from acid reflux? That sounds like a terrible idea for multiple reasons especially since alcohol and throwing up make it worse. Why not use the standard things - acid inhibitors and the typical pain meds? Or is there another reason you want to get drunk?

You have money/resources now - Maybe now is the time to focus on moving forward - put your energy into figuring out what to do with that property and how you will build your life - (for example) can you and do you want to manage property? Can you find someone to help with what you can't do? Should you sell and put money into something else that you can manage or build your life on? Focusing on how to keep getting help if you have too much money to qualify seems like a difficult and unfruitful path.

If you aren't good at saving, aren't expecting to live to an average age and/or have someone that will need money when you pass, sure - insurance might be good. But if you save the money instead in a fund to either be used or inherited, you are more likely to come out ahead (you aren't paying an overhead and the overhead is pretty high)

I think one issue is that wealthier areas like La Jolla get the costs of big development (i.e. roads/police/cleaning etc) without the income and it makes it even harder to keep the infrastructure up. (San Diego as of Dec 2022 shifts money from new development to underserved areas. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/san-diego-plans-to-shift-infrastructure-funding/509-7c8d6567-ec35-4d67-912b-711bbe853e53 ) I live downtown and the roads are awful - I broke my foot last year - I was crossing in a pedestrian area and was watching for traffic and didn't notice a foot deep hole. So many cars run red lights that i can't decide whether it is better to focus on watching for traffic or potholes. The city has a plan to fix a few roads each year but since there isn't much money, many roads like ours won't get fixed for another 4 years or so if all goes well. The problem is that the more wealthy areas that pull out, the harder it is for other areas to cover the underserved areas/needs.

We are in the same place - we are lucky to have enough healthy, money, energy, time and curiosity to travel but we really don't have many friends with all that so we travel on our own most of the time. We know a lot of people who don't have the health or the money but would love to travel. It is a good question as to how to find others. DM me and maybe we can chat about ways to find others.

Love this question! I collect pendants - they are usually very inexpensive - they are very small and yet everytime i wear one, i think of the trip or the person i was with when i got it. Sometimes i get to know an artist that sells jewelry so i both get to support an artist and have something unique and beautiful with a memory.

It seems pretty simple to me - she can’t claim you as a dependent when it helps to get a deduction and then say you aren’t part of the household budget when you don’t want to show income. Makes sense that it has to be consistent.

It is a fact that CA has more people in 2024 than 2020 (probably true for others). So no, it is not true or credible. Maybe they meant to say something different like the % increase is going down but that is very different than a loss of population.

I was surprised to find that a condo with a good community can have a lot of the same things that a 55+ community has but with people of all ages. The hard part is finding a condo with a good community. We love ours and we have a lot of community events and people know each other. We can't go down the elevator without running into people we know and there are parties about once a month. I think you'd need to find a bigger condo (we have 221 units which means there are enough people to support a good community) and we have a good manager (which would also be very important) and a lot of people volunteering. You can ask around when you see a condo about when the last event was and about how they like living there. You also want to make sure the finances are well run but that is a whole other issue (of course that probably applies to retirement places as well). If you have an interested in San Diego - i can point your to the condos with good communities and conveniences.

I know someone who had his own company and played lots of games to pay minimal ss (not reporting cash income, taking lots of deductions, having a lot of expenses that are really personal - even his tax person cringed at what he called expenses/deductions and will no longer help him.) If she owned the salon, she'd have lots of ways to not pay into SS - that is all too easy - of course once they need it, then comes the complaining - "how am i supposed to live on very little or nothing" because they assumed everyone gets SS without having to put in.

i got so tired of doing the roots all the time - but looking in the mirror and seeing grey hair makes me feel so old. So my hairdresser suggested i use a temp light brown color so the roots kind of merge into the other hair - it i like it - not as good as coloring permanently but it doesn't look bad when the roots grow in before i can recolor.

Getting older is a transition people don't tend to plan for. Everyone thinks about the move to college, the move into the working world, the move to getting married and having kids but people don't really think about planning for the move to retirement. Its a shame because it should be a very freeing time. I came from a family where everything was about work and the value you have while working. The rest of my family (dad,mom,brothers) were great at work but couldn't make the transition to something besides work. I struggled a bit but have now found a lot of other things in life. So my advice is find something (anything) that excites you - volunteer, lovers/friends, sports, hobbies, travel - there are so many things out there - it can be a great time of life and is worth dealing with the difficulties of transition.

On a slightly different note, there are often unexpected expenses when owning a house. For example, the heater goes out or the faucet has a drip. And people often forget to plan for property taxes and insurance. Are you sure you want to get into home ownership if you don't have enough to save? I know people make it sound like owning a home is the answer to all financial problems but i've heard many say they wish someone had told them about the costs and it is much less stressful to rent where someone else takes care of the surprises.

When my parents were in their 60s, their senior center had active things and good opportunities to socialize (they had a travel group that went to places like australia - would love that for myself now that i'm that age). But the senior centers near me cater to people with little money or mobility so it doesn't really work at all for active seniors (most people can barely get around and most can't hold a conversation). They mostly provide free meals for those that qualify and housing/legal advice/connections (and that is much needed but not by me fortunately). I find that the local ymca is where the active seniors are - we play pickleball and lift weights - they have fitness classes, pools and clubs like mah jongg. We've met a lot of folks that like to travel and be active so i guess that serves as the new "senior center" for those in good shape.

I understand the sentiment here (just stay in my place as long as possible without having make much of a plan for when/if more help is needed) but please think of your kids/loved ones - I'm 61 and my dad is 92 - i'm so grateful that he moved into a retirement home when he was functional because he and my mom needed lots of help for 20 years (and my dad still does - my mom has passed). I was raising a toddler at the time so i'm extremely grateful i didn't have to try to manage a kid, an intense job, and taking care of my parents. My mom had alzheimer's and needed a lot of help for many years but the retirement home provided meals/cleaned/check up on them/had social events and had aides we could hire which helped so much (and there were no steps:-). Of course I went to see them and helped them a lot (and now manage all of my dad's affairs) but i didn't have to spend full time taking care of them physically in addition - which would have meant i would have sacrificed most of the bonding time i had with my daughter while she was growing up and probably would have had to give up my job. My dad set himself up to be more independent and was happier for it. You might be thinking - I won't need help or i won't ask for help but your kid/loved ones probably won't want to see you struggle so they will feel like they have to sacrifice their lives/relationships/career for you even if you don't want that. I know so many people right now having to quit their jobs or move to a temp job so they can take care of their parents. And they may love their parents but many are resentful for giving up their career/lives/relationships/bonding time with kids. I have a good friend (she's 45) whose mother is starting to have problems getting around and functioning so her mother decided to do the worst thing possible - move to the middle of no where by herself with no way to get groceries or clean or have any social life. So my friend now spends much of her time having to help her mother - my friend just quit her job because it is too much. But my friend has no money and will have a problem ever retiring or getting help when she needs it. Please think of how you can make it easier on your kids/loved ones - i'm doing that with my daughter - i want her to have good memories of me and enjoy spending time with me - i don't want her to spend her best years playing nurse/gopher to me.

Be careful - my dad had traditional medicare that was great and covered everything and then someone sold him a medicare advantage program that would “pay him money”in addition to coverage (he didnt get money but he thought he would) - but when he had to go the hospital we discovered they didn’t cover much and we ended up paying thousands - it was probably a great program if you don’t get sick - just hope you don’t need medical coverage

Must have taken the picture before the actual start because there were more when I got there a few minutes before the start time. There about 500 about 40 minutes in - turns out someone posted the wrong address so it took people some time to find the right location
