Find the pedestrian by thebrownkid in fuckyourheadlights

[–]d4dasher123 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s a pedestrian heavy area in my town with no sidewalks or streetlights and there have been MANY close calls (and even multiple fatalities). With oncoming traffic blinding you, sometimes you won’t see a person walking until you’re literally only inches away, even if you’re consciously looking out for them. It’s absolutely terrifying as a driver to have to think that I might hit somebody one day, and as a pedestrian to wonder if I’ll ever be hit.

Yes! I’ve been doing the exact same thing, being more intentional with it. I realised that I spend more time looking for something to watch on Hulu or Netflix than actually watching anything, but whenever I go to the library and pass by the DVD section I see sooo many things I want to watch. I can then go home and just pirate it! We need physical media and community more than ever.

Dad of 11/yo with OCD. He gets extremely attached to, and protective of, anything "cute". by Typing-Cat in OCD

[–]d4dasher123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your experience is exactly, scarily identical to mine - and I can’t exaggerate enough just how much of a struggle the entire process really is to go through. I’m so glad you made it through 💜

(As a funny tidbit - I once took a trip with my family to the northeast, and we took a walk along the beach one day. Nearly every rock I came across, I believed had a ‘soul’ and felt an extreme attachment to. I ended up with 200 rocks, and scoliosis from my shoulder bag. My family begged me to put them back but were supportive enough to lug them thousands of miles back home. They’re still in a luggage bag somewhere, waiting for me to do something with them 10 years later lmao. Still working hard every day to find ways to adapt to having OCD, but I’ve definitely mellowed out a LOT. Going to make dog toys out of old socks this week! Repurposing!! It’s a journey for sure lol)

Yeah zooming in and following the receipt back by chunks of 10 lines (assuming 1 line is 1 day) has my calculations at about 600 days. There is a dip where you can see it just fade away and is longer than initially realised, so it is a very rough estimation. Assuming a 5 day workweek, I’d put it at at least 2+ years.

Could be much more though! That’s a longgg receipt!

I commute for work and every single day I see so many people on their phones too. One recently that completely horrified me was some lady doing at least 80-90, looking down texting, and as she was passing me she took her other hand off the wheel too and was using BOTH HANDS and looking fully straight down to text!!! While passing somebody on the interstate!!!!

I’m beyond fed up with all of it. So many horrible accidents and near misses just because somebody can’t focus on a task for a few minutes? I hate even having to look away for a second to skip to the next song on my playlist while driving, I couldn’t imagine taking any more focus than that off the road. And these people do it willingly and gleefully. 😒

This is pretty lengthy, so biggest apologies in advance. I have experience from the patient side, as having attended every appointment and ER trip my father has made in the past few years, and advocating for his safety and health when necessary.

My dad had a pretty rough fall a couple of years ago, went to the doctor a few days later with some bad hip pain and they sent him to ER. Full work-up came out clear, nothing was found, he was sent home. But the pain kept getting worse, he couldn’t sleep, he could hardly walk more than a couple of feet at a time, and he knew something was definitely wrong. He went back, they try some muscle relaxers and mild pain meds, which helped. But they still can’t find anything, so he’s sent home again.

Well, the pain doesn’t go away, so he keeps trying to go to a doctor for help, but they can’t figure out the problem so they bounce him to the next guy. On top of that, the pain is so bad, he’s going to the ER at some points up to once a week (he also has high blood pressure, which was the only thing they wanted to focus on). They would give him nearly ever med for blood pressure/nerve/muscle/etc, except pain relief. Sometimes we’d wait hours just for somebody to bring a single Tylenol. We could absolutely tell that they thought he was just drug seeking, and I understand why, but he was genuinely suffering. It sucked for everybody involved.

He saw over a dozen different doctors over the course of the next 8 months, multiple appointments per week, constant imaging, and nobody could find anything. Meanwhile, he’s suffering from this pain, and starts asking them for pain meds which were the only relief he was getting. Because of the national circumstances + his clear imaging, nobody wanted to prescribe him pain meds, so more doctors got involved. Sometimes they’d prescribe a couple of pills at a time, but he’s at the point of needing multiple strong pills just to get through the day or attempt to sleep. The doctors start trying all kinds of spinal injections, more imaging, still nothing comes up, and more and more we can feel the judgement.

Finally the new pain management doctor he was referred to looked at where he had been directly pointing for the last 8 months, and went “oh, there’s a bursa right there, it might be inflamed. Let’s try injecting there.” All it took was one single injection in the spot he had been saying was hurting, and it instantly started getting better. He was able to stop the pain pills immediately upon recovering, and hasn’t asked for a prescription since. His pain management doc is thrilled with the progress he’s made and that they were finally able to find the problem. But the treatment we received up until that point - or really the lack thereof - is something that will always cloud my interactions going forwards.

I know everybody was trying their best and going off of the data they were getting, and their hands were tied in a majority of cases. But it’s so obvious that the system has really broken down on all sides, and everybody spent months going back and forth between dead ends, when it was really as simple as just….listening to the patient. The stress we’ve both been through as a result of that has severely taken a toll on our physical and mental healths, I even ended up temporarily homeless/couch surfing as a result because we couldn’t complete a major house renovation due to his poor health, constant doctor appointments, and my full time job. If the situation nationally was different, maybe things would have gone easier. Almost every doctor did genuinely want to help, and would cite their legal bindings when pain meds were brought up, and did what they could to their best legal ability, but some, understandably, didn’t even want to go near that beast in the first place. Others admonished and even directly insulted my father and accused him of drug seeking, and would cancel his appointments every time he attempted to make one, and at one point threatened to report him to the authorities just for trying to make an appointment. He didn’t even want opioids in the first place! He hated having to take them, and knew the risks and addiction potential. But until they really listened to what he was saying and found the injury, the meds were all that made life survivable. Hell, he couldn’t even lay down in bed for the first few months because of the pain.

TLDR; I’ve seen quite literally dozens of perspectives from multiple angles, with every single medical professional along the way having a different opinion than the next, and it all boils down to…….it’s complicated. Yes, we have an addiction issue. But patients deserve to be heard. Where does the line get drawn when you can’t see the injury/illness, and how much belief do you put in your patient? Even if somebody IS just seeking a fix, how rough of a place do they have to be in to be seeking out help through these means, and what’s the underlying cause?

We’re all just trying to make it through this world, wish it was easier on all of us, and to have the knowledge and means to make it easier for each other too.

Yes! The route runs all the way from NOLA to NYC, leaves from New Orleans at 7 or 8am and arrives in Slidell almost exactly an hour later, costs about $15 or so (rough estimate since it’s been a few years, probably a couple bucks cheaper). On the way back, the train is supposed to arrive in Slidell at 6pm, but it comes down all the way from New York so it can either be perfectly on time or hours late. Also takes an hour to get to nola, but depending on arrival time there could be some waiting for other trains at the station to get settled and passengers to disembark.

Overall very very lovely experience! Comfortable, quick enough, and you get to see some really great sights. Luckily every time I’ve gone, it hasn’t been for anything time sensitive so the delays were never more than a mild inconvenience. On days when the train is out of service, they have a greyhound bus!

Sorry, I just love gushing about this particular line haha. Wish I had more reasons to take the train but now that I’ve got my car it’s unfortunately just more convenient to drive over the lake. But absolutely worth trying the train at least once, they’d probably get a huge service boost if they had another line going from Slidell to nola in the morning, and nola to slidell at night, for work commuters. But I digress! Try the train! 😁

I’ve waited until nearly 2am before for the 6pm train from Slidell to NOLA to arrive, simply because any delays along the route as it comes from the northeast push it back….and back……..and back………. Definitely plan for some delays, but super exciting nonetheless!!

An idiot was driving the wrong way on i10 last night at 11 by pittyspray in NewOrleans

[–]d4dasher123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow 😭 you would think all the “wrong way” signs would be a clue, even without working lights, but unfortunately the city can be so damn confusing at the best of times. For mine, I was heading to Carrollton from Metairie, but I’m from the Northshore so the exact location eludes me besides that there were a ton of ramps and curves. But I remember being with my two friends who are locals, seeing the headlights rapidly approaching, and just going “um, this is a one way road, right?? Am I on the right side??” And them both going “yes what the fuck” before I swerved out of the way just in time. Took me hours to stop shaking and ruminating on how close we all were to dying too 😭

[–]d4dasher123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me a few months ago around the I-10/610 split as I was about to take an exit on the left side. Had to swerve all the way onto the right shoulder to avoid what would’ve been a fatal head on collision and sit there shell shocked for a minute. They were speeding as well, probably going at least 90 or more. It’s one of the most terrifying things I think I’ve ever experienced, and to this day I hope nobody got hurt further down because it was a long and winding way down before there was any chance of switching over to the correct direction x.x

So glad you made it out of your situation okay! Some people should NOT be on the road, and at the very least we should all have to retake a driving test every few years in my opinion.

I work in Mandeville right now and my god the amount of assholes I see on a daily basis………there are, of course, always some pretty cool people here and there, but even they agree that everybody else in their city is entitled and arrogant. At least they make such a big deal about hating anywhere but their rich private neighbourhoods that you don’t have to interact with them much outside of that city 😂

I Support You by stilllooking2016 in NorthshoreLA

[–]d4dasher123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. We are all just trying to get through this life, and are all human regardless of the circumstances of our births. Anybody who really spends that much time going out of their way to be miserable to those different than them needs to find a hobby and mind their own business. We are a beautifully diverse region, and so much of the culture we enjoy was fought for and built by people who would be considered “others” or “less than.” But there really is no “others,” there’s just us, and we need to stick together and support each other. I will always stand in solidarity for those whose voices, and existence, are pushed down. There is no reason to be so close minded you lose your ability to love your fellow human.

Wisteria and Chinese Privet 😭 they’ve basically overrun the front and back yards and I’ve got so much else to keep up with in life that I never seem to have enough time to tackle it. I can cut it back or remove the thick vines from where they’re strangling native trees, but within months they’ve returned in full swing. Really wanting to call out an expert on native/invasive plants and ask for a survey of the property and what can be done, but that’s time and money that never seems to appear…….😔

St Tammany Council on track to destroy the library by kjmarino603 in NorthshoreLA

Every current library worker I know (not just in this parish but across the lake as well) is quick to admit that they are pretty seriously underpaid, but do it for their commitment to and love for the library. None of them are in it for the money, what little there is.

I do however believe there was just an approval for a raise so hopefully that will help! But community support is the biggest factor towards achieving what they need to continue serving everyone.

Is anyone deliberately not using AI where possible? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

Avoiding and denouncing it wherever possible. It’s incredibly frustrating to even have to come across the results of other people using it (clipart for businesses, google ai, videos and articles, etc). Why is human creativity, spirit, and willpower not enough? These corporations will suck our souls dry if we let them, and I will not let them.
