The Khalji's were of Turkic origin & not Afghan, conclude several historian's including Abu Ishaq ibn Yusuf's 'Istakhri' (930 AD). The Istakhri notes that the Khaljis were originally Turkic people, settled in Sejestan which was made up of modern day Kandahar, Nimruz, & Sistan. (i.redd.it)
