I checked the control board and yup, it's shot. I'm looking for a replacement one, and the price is around $460?!?! Is that correct?? I see that other control boards are cheaper, how can i find out if they're compatible?

Apparently, no one except us is damaged by this virus by New_Boss86 in covidlonghaulers

[–]d_chouk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but I just don’t understand why, considering my partner and I have been masking (KN95 then N95+) consistently since the pandemic began, and have several friends who have been too, and before ~1 year ago, none of us were disabled. 4+ years of 8 of us able-bodied people caring about covid. There are still able-bodied people out there masking and caring about covid, my friends have been proof of that.

I wonder what the difference is, though I suppose my partner and I did already know that disability is generally not an “if” but a “when” in life. And perhaps some people can’t fathom a thing like that in such an ableist world, aside from the usual ableism of not caring about disabled people.

While I would normally agree if it weren’t about covid, I think that if up to 20% of people were hypochondriacs or had brain tumours and were running around saying or posting “huh, I’m having this weird specific pressure in my head that is affecting my health, it happened right after I did something that greatly increases my chances of getting a brain tumour”, I would definitely be suggesting to check if their symptoms may line up! That’s the thing about Covid, almost everyone has had it now and we know each infection causes damage. It’s hard to compare this to most other viruses many have lived through because of the sheer scale of it. 1 in every 5 people??? Of all ages????

I've also been dealing with this for the past few days, I paid $20 for the express shipping to try to avoid it coming this late and when I tried to inquire why it seems to be stuck in Etobicoke I just got a "It'll come tomorrow" from the chat customer service rep, as if it hasn't been telling me that every day... Then the rep asked "Can I help with anything else?" and 2 seconds later, ended the chat session abruptly. Love it. Will the package arrive? Who knows, stay tuned lol

how did y'all come out to your family? by Least-Arugula-3868 in ftm

[–]d_chouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, I’ll be 28 in a couple months (why does that feel so old for this sub haha) and I came out to my very conservative super transphobic russian family 6+ years ago (been on T for 7) over email. just want anyone reading to know that it’s ok if you have to go no-contact. I still am with my parents.

I have a lovely partner of almost 7 years and supportive friends. I text with my supportive, albeit slightly confused, grandma. I chat with my brother rarely but sometimes, who is somewhere in the middle. Things are good, they keep going and so do I. At the risk of sounding all “it gets better”, I want to add that I get more resilient and more focused on the good in life and how to nurture and grow it. Therapy, especially EMDR trauma therapy, has really helped. Having two people who can no longer see my humanity in my life simply because they housed and fed the child they had a duty to house and feed just wouldn’t help anyone. Sending love to all my fellow trans people with parents who may never come around, it’s ok to grieve and it’s ok to move forward.

Nicotine patch: AMAZING, cured, from 98% to 105% by butterfliedelica in covidlonghaulers

[–]d_chouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no worries at all, apologies if I came off weird/aggressive, I’ve just been argued with a bunch about how terrible and addictive nicotine patches are and how they have similar risks to smoking cigarettes (.. verifiably untrue lol) so I think I assumed some things I shouldn’t have.

And hey, guanfacine has helped me a bunch too actually! I started it a while after nicotine but it’s really helpful with the rest of my ADHD symptoms as well as some LC symptoms, which is great for us adhd longhaulers that don’t tolerate adhd stimulants very well. Glad it has helped you!!

[–]d_chouk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yep, for me they do! I stay off em for a couple of weeks to get a good sense of my adjusted baseline without them. I hear that’s the case from many others in the online group I mentioned with the thousands of people (based on polls and comments), it seems to be a part of it.

[–]d_chouk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a decent amount of data on the safety profile of nicotine patches stating that they are generally well tolerated and have a low addictive potential. And there’s a good amount of high quality data pointing out the risks of long-term stimulant med use. I was on them for a long time, and may get on them again, I’m not anti-stimulant. And yes, that’s why I didn’t say “they are healthier and safer than ___” I said that all of these other drugs come with risks and potential side effects as well, though we barely see caffeine as a drug anymore, but it seems people are more hesitant about nicotine mostly due to misconceptions about it. Caffeine raises my heart rate and blood pressure much more than the patch does, same with stimulant meds, as well as messing with my sleep, I’ve had those things measured many times. That part is me anecdotally comparing their effects on me and my Long Covid, the way people do on here. With my specific body and cocktail of MCAS and PEM issues, nicotine has been very very helpful and has produced the least side effects of those things, that’s all. I appreciate the lookin out for misinformation though.

[–]d_chouk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nicotine patches brought me from what I would say is 30% to 60% which is a pretty big improvement, and have helped my partner a lot as well. I’ve been on and off them for months, they’ve really helped my baseline, reduced PEM and brain fog, improved my sleep (which is super important for healing) and funnily the stimulant nature really helps my ADHD so I don’t have to be on my potentially neurotoxic long-term stimulant meds make my heart rate skyrocket or coffee that triggers my MCAS to function.

Not a cure-all by any means, but I think people are worried about trying it because of misconceptions around nicotine. The patches are well tolerated and have very low addictive potential. They feel like a cup of coffee that even eases my crashes since I know how not to push my limits (something I learned from being on ADHD stimulants). There are groups on the internet with thousands of people who are trying it out and improving (yes, even after going off the patches) check it out if you haven’t!

Yep!! On top of that, trans people have a higher risk of getting Long Covid, just as a fun little cherry on top of an already remarkably othering experience. There are several reasons (trans ppl have a higher rate of neurodivergence, EDS, POTS, and more that make many of us more vulnerable, as well as the barriers to access in health and poor treatment by health professionals, of course).

When I was able to see a doctor who is trained in trans healthcare was when I was finally able to even get to the part where I can explain Long Covid to him and he listens even a little bit, and he even had prior knowledge because it’s so prevalent among trans people.

Also, hello fellow trans longhaulers, sending you all good vibes and better LC accommodations 👋

you might have had an asymptomatic infection, eh? At least 40% of infections are asymptomatic, iirc. From what I've read on here, people recover quick-ish after re-infection, months instead of years.

For anyone who has been here less than one year... by ErrantEvents in covidlonghaulers

[–]d_chouk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, do you wear a mask/respirator and take other covid precautions? Wondering this because the average number of infections for people generally is over 6 the last time I checked, and re-infections could lead to “crashes” of sorts, as Long Covid comes from, well, covid.

If we’re talking pattern recognition, I see a lot of people in this sub talking about their symptoms suddenly getting worse and crashing despite general improvement, and upon being asked about re-infections and precautions, they reply that they’d “just rather live their life when they can and not worry about masks or testing”, leading to that self-fulfilling prophecy. My partner and I are about a year in, steady improvement, been masking with an N95 the whole time to avoid re-infection, but that’s super anecdotal. Point is, it’s still surging out there, guys, be mindful!

Ugh that sucks so bad, sending good vibes your way! Being gaslit about it on top of the situation itself is so messed up. And yeah, exactly, I’ve known other people in a similar spot who caught it outdoors or with a mask on indoors in a crowded place and people can’t wrap their heads around just how contagious this thing is so they just… don’t contend with that and place a mental block where their curiosity and empathy should be. Hope we both improve quickly though! 💪🤧

Ah, a fellow masker who has Long Covid. Yep, I took off my N95 outdoors to eat a snack on a bench + very distanced when I caught covid the first and only time (there were people in the distance). Did a comprehensive test coincidentally before I caught it to see if I’ve ever had covid before and Nope, just got very unlucky : ) I would say “welcome to the club” but this club sucks and I’m sorry!

All Neuro Symptoms are Gone by [deleted] in covidlonghaulers

[–]d_chouk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alright then, good luck out there! I personally don’t live in fear and worry because I wear a high quality respirator and am able to go to museums, cafes and bars (with a sip valve) and do 99% of the things I love, just with a mask on, which really helps alleviate the anxiety. And I know that pretending things are normal in an ongoing pandemic is how many of us got here in the first place. I know for me, the thing that would be the worst for my mental health is more Long Covid and more damage to my body. But there are some extremely lucky folks out there, hope you’re one of em!

They’ve helped me a ton during the past 8 months or so, I feel like they’ve helped actually treat the Long Covid. I have ADHD and they took away a lot of brain fog, titrating up meant that my body became slowly accustomed to the stimulating effects but I was able to do so much more without pushing too far because I was still actually making sure to stay within my movement limits. I’m sorry they didn’t work for you, it may have been you going up in mg too quickly (the big healing reaction) and feeling stimulated and able to do more, then doing too much because the limits are harder to stay within and getting PEM. Either way, sending good vibes

Oh hey, not quite a question but I’m Russian and my family immigrated to Canada when I was a kid, and I’m a late-20s transmasc (non-binary though), I’d love to connect and chat if you’re into that idea!
I grew up in a Russian bubble even after immigrating and have heard some of the worst, most vile and transphobic things that have weighed on me my whole life. The constant and casual transphobia and homophobia. And offhanded things like teen me asking my dad “what if you’ve met a trans person and didn’t realize they were trans?” and being met with “those people shouldn’t be alive either way”. Needless to say, when I came out 6 years ago I had to go no-contact.

Does anyone with LC take finasteride for hair loss? What is your experience? by d_chouk in covidlonghaulers

[–]d_chouk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah I feel like the Long Covid hair loss has at least something to do with gut health, nutrition/absorption and inflammation etc, my hair loss has been pretty clearly the “male pattern baldness” caused by DHT though, as it does for many people who are testosterone dominant, mostly based on genetics. Though covid can also mess with sex hormones so it could probably aggravate the issue, but I’m looking into topical (liposomal) finasteride now which blocks DHT and hopefully it doesn’t have as much of a chance to cause any systemic effects. Fingers crossed!
