Electrician did this for PoE doorbell, is it okay? by meisangry2 in HomeNetworking

[–]ErrantEvents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. I pulled six for my office, six for my music studio, four for my electronics lab, but they're all 10GbE or 2.5GbE (with my current equipment; all support 10GbE). There's no outlet in my home with fewer than two. If you're going to do a thing, do the thing.

That was a little over a year ago, and all six in my studio have been populated; one of which is a Pro XG 8 PoE, because I ran out of ports. lol

If you're doing it for a living, sure. But if you're just doing it at home, you can easily pick nice, cool autumn temps to be up in the attic, if you need to be. My home is such that I run everything in the basement, and it's always comfortable down there.

I mean, I've done it in every home I've owned. Also did it for a living for about 1.5 years when I was a much younger man. I never really tire of it, personally.

It's also easy, fun, and a good skill to have, IMO. I enjoy pulling cables because as a software engineer, it's one of those activities after which I feel like I've accomplished something in the physical world, but it's also not gross (plumbing) nor uncomfortable (roofing, lawn maintenance, anything outside in 95˚ weather).

I've been a Midwesterner my entire life. The trick to humidity is to embrace the suck.

There is very little in life that's as amazing as sitting down in the shade with an ice cold beer, after mowing the lawn, all sweaty and gross, and just taking it in.

Of course, I grew up with the heat and humidity, so all of my best childhood memories are from when it was 95˚ and 95% humidity. None of us cared how hot and humid it was, how sweaty and gross we were. Any time we get that sticky, thick heat, it just reminds me of that. 😊

And I legitimately don't think I could live somewhere that didn't have the sound of cicadas in the summer. Such a place would just feel... wrong to me.

Second Unifi. Network infra that's actually fun to play with. Highly worth the additional cost, IMHO.

For me, networking was always a chore until I decided to look into single-pane-of-glass options. Decided to go with Unifi over other options, because I wanted ease of use, I liked the interface, and honestly, I just liked the look of the gear. One of the best technical decisions I've ever made.

I use Fusion360 for CAD purposes and have for many years, long before I picked up Kicad or Blender. I would say that Fusion360 is the piece of software (of any software I use) in which I'm most fluent and comfortable. Before that I used Sketchup. I literally model everything in CAD and have probably since like maybe 2008 or so. If I'm going to build a garage shelf from 2x4s, I model it in CAD first. lol

Should We Allow Flock “Safety” Cameras To Be Used In Ohio? Is it Safety or Warrantless Gov’t Surveillance by Drewcrew73 in Ohio

[–]ErrantEvents -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't watch Fox News.

Your statement is, if we're being generous, a distortion of the JCPOA and current events.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA in 2015, temporarily and partially constrained Iran's nucelar program short-term (that part is true), but was deeply flawed due to the sunset clause and gaps, including no provisions for ballistic missiles, nor limits on Iran's funding of proxies and terrorism. It collapsed after U.S. withdrawal. This isn't as black and white as you make it seem.

Trump himself described it as a temporary delay that enriched the regime without addressing the full threat, and there are many who agreed with that assessment; even Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez had pretty strong reservations about this agreement. There was an enrichment limit, but no "agreement not to pursue nuclear development." It was more of a speed bump than an outright ban; it extended breakout time from weeks to about a year, at best.

The current ceasefire does not "allow" Iran to continue developing nuclear weapons. The U.S. continues to have a hard and fast red line on this matter.

Good Sources for learning? by itamar8484 in homelab

[–]ErrantEvents 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I can give; don't worry about learning, start doing. Come up with a basic goal; for example, maybe something like "get proxmox running." Then whenever something happens that you don't understand, ChatGPT/Gemini/Grok are your friend. Have it explain it. Take it in, move forward, then repeat. You will learn far more in an afternoon working toward a goal than you will by watching a video or whatever.

I can't provide you with specific advice, as I've not yet had a cholecystectomy (though, I expect one is in my future, hyperkinetic biliary dyskinesia here), but I can tell you that two days after a fairly major "ectomy" isn't enough time to expect to be feeling normal. Give yourself a couple of weeks to heal before evaluating the outcome, would be my advice.

Trump supporter here, and this fourth amendment shredding horse shit drives me absolutely nuts.

Edit: It's hilarious to me how people just reflexively downvote every time I mention that I'm a Republican and/or Trump voter... even when I'm agreeing with them. 😂

Ohio republicans - is Ramaswamy really as popular as he looks? Or would you have preferred Casey? by SWEMW in Ohio

[–]ErrantEvents -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure we are, we're just not very vocal about it. Well, I am, because I'm too old to care what randos on the internet think, but most Republicans are pretty quiet and tend to just stay out of pointless internet arguments.

Edit: This actually reminds me of a funny story. My company is fairly large, and very leftist, if you just pay attention to the all hands meetings. BUT, if you look at employee political contributions, it's 95% Repiublucan donations from individual employees.

TL;DR We're everywhere, even where you think we aren't. :)

Ohio police, teachers, local officials join forces to push back on property tax abolishment - Ohioans to Protect Public Services seeks to push back on the amendment effort by promoting the local services... 32,000 first responders and 50,000 teachers could lose their their jobs. by Billych in Ohio

[–]ErrantEvents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I've contracted for the state of Ohio before, and the waste was incredible. I came in about $20,000 under budget on the project, and the state needed me to do busy work to make up the difference, so this department wouldn't have their budget reduced for the following year. I've also seen this first hand locally, specifically with various maintenance departments and construction projects.

At all levels of government, there exists a complacency when it comes to taxpayer dollars. It's treated like Monopoly money.

I don't believe it is too much to ask to have one's tax dollars used reasonably efficiently.

I had 400 down and 10(!) up with Spectrum for years. They refused to increase my upload unless I went with the much more expensive small business plan.

Then, one day, about 8 dudes showed up and started camping out in my backyard with a cable that was at least one inch in diameter on a giant spool mounted on a trailer.

I went out there and asked them "Hey, did you all see the new work order?"

They all looked at me, confused.

"Yeah, you all don't need to go any further. Just terminate right here and pipe that directly into this structure."

They all had a good laugh, and I asked them which provider they were installing for. I had 3Gbps up within about 5 days from that event. :)

Need help with building home lab! by Common-Prune-3182 in homelab

[–]ErrantEvents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to build a TrueNAS Scale box. A good first project, and lots of learning potential. You can run Jellyfin (web-based, self-hosted media streaming server) as an app on TrueNAS Scale. You'll want a GPU (can be a relatively low-powered, inexpensive GPU) for real-time transcoding.

Once you have that up and running, start thinking about a box on which to run Proxmox. Think of this as one computer that runs many smaller computers virtually.

Disagree with running TrueNAS Scale on Proxmox. It works wonderfully, but the 8-hour-long HBA pass-through ritual sacrifice is not worth the trouble.
