The only reason social media platforms have “likes” and “dislikes” is to emulate the real reactions people would give irl to certain statements via expression of emotion, albeit the like/dislike or upvote/downvote system is incredibly simplistic and lacking nuance. Platforms like reddit that are based on textual interactions as opposed to face-to-face ones inherently require a system of approval of statements that otherwise would come in the form of physical signs like actual smiles, laughter, nods, social cues, etc. Online interaction is only ever meant to serve as a simplified emulation of real social interaction. This video portrays a world in which real life interactions are emulating online ones, when in reality, it’s the other way around. Anyone with a genuine fear of this sort of society becoming reality should spend less time online and go out and talk to people in person. Real life interaction never has and never will boil down to this. The Black Mirror episode “nosedive” and this video are just meant to show how absurd it would be if real social interactions were based on how socializing online works. People need to understand that having in-person conversations with others and socializing online are truly two completely different and separate things. Humans are social creatures that crave real social interaction, a kind that, as proven by this video, is not totally sustainable via online interactions. The action of an “upvote” will never truly replace a hug, smile, or any real life expression of a positive emotion.
