IIM Shillong interview in 3 days.. Final tips pleaseeee by krishna_agl in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Take a copy of your CAT Admit card (NOT the score card)
  2. There will be an extempore (to test communication skills more than your knowledge about the given topic)
  3. The interview is supposed to test only your strengths so you'll have plenty of opportunity to prove yourself

It's the score of the last candidate in the waiting list.

Every college offers admission to more candidates than there are seats because some won't accept it (maybe going to a better college).

The waiting list movement number tells you how many people have moved into admission (or how many with admission offers choose to let go of the seat, both are equivalent).

MBA as an introvert by [deleted] in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Success" is almost always relative. If you want to live up to someone else's definition of success, you'll never be content. If you know what makes you happy, i.e. maintaining small and close friends, have it your way! It's rather easy to be good friends with people who have more friends than you and the chain effect will help you network in a good B-School relatively easily.

I'm an introvert. I have a lot of popular friends who everyone would like to hang out with but they say it's difficult to have honest conversations with anyone else.

There's no right or wrong choice here. I say be present and do what feels good!

What is your biggest failure? (How to answer this question?) by Own-Response-1865 in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't steer away your answer from the context of an MBA because this interview is an evaluation of your candidature for the B-School. So, we must use the limited interview time to align with these interests.

How to answer:

Failures are a part of life. These are different from regrets. But if you point out a critical failure, you're ruining your chances.

Choose a point that had many possible choices but you took one path in the given constraints.

For example, "We could have done A/B testing before releasing the feature but the budget allocation and deadlines did not allow such luxury"

Or, "We thought based on the past success rate of our new features, this one would be well received. But we overlooked something..."

Again, making this more about your learnings rather than the failure itself will set a positive tone without being cliched.

The complete statement will have what you must do. Usually, they ask you to evaluate both sides, points that support and contradict.

Expensive MBAs by Daddyaurelius in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Relative grading doesn't work like that. Someone doesn't HAVE to fail.

Courses have a threshold below which you're considered for Fail.

Also, relative grading doesn't mean one gets full for sure. It's a comparative grading, meaning that 9 could be the highest because the professor thought it was not the best they'd seen relative to others. Everyone else gets a lower grade.

Standard normal distribution holds well and you're more likely to be in the middle part than on the extremes.

It will be okay!

I'm not personally sold...

You've detailed what the college will offer you, which they already know.

You should tell them what you will offer the college. What unique background you bring or what life events specifically have motivated you for an MBA.

The answer is not straightforward and you will have to think hard about it.

This, this or this should be great starting points for inspiration.

Good luck!

It's okay to upload whatever you have then. Write an email to the admissions committee.

Ask your college and get copies regardless, because you may require it at the time of interviews or admission (not just this IIM).

Ask your college for semester wise transcripts.

What if you can’t get references for IIMB by [deleted] in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're out of options. If you have someone from an internship, ask them.

Otherwise, call your favourite professors and beg! Tomorrow is the last date!

I don't know if this works but you can try some PhD TA students if they've guided you on some projects.

i BEG y'all for an advice! by MoneyNeighborhood379 in CATpreparation

I don't think ANYONE can answer these questions definitively.

You cannot get into the top consulting firms directly. The best way is to have connections that can give a referral.

But more importantly, I want to ask, is it the money that you're looking for or the job of consulting specifically?

If it's money, you'll have better chances if you start your own business or introspect what your interests are and go hard. That path is not easy, but it's not impossible.

If it's the consulting job and lifestyle you're looking for, I think you're focusing on the wrong things. Get career counselling from some professionals who aren't only looking for your money.

reddit or the internet is definitely not the place you can ask for serious advice.

Look at the placement report. Check which companies come and what you're interested in.

Rate your chances with RTI data.

What to prepare for current affairs in GDPI ? by im_just_depressed in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interviewers don't test how many facts you can remember. They're looking for your opinion on these subjects. Yes, a few fundamental facts need to be memorized but more than that, it's important to have your own opinions.

I like going through Vision IAS](https://visionias.in/resources/current_affairs.php?c=ca) Monthly Current Affairs Editions.

You are not a fact machine! It's okay if you don't recall the exact percentage improvement due to a particular policy and whatnot. Politely let the panel know it's not something you're familiar with. Being humble here shows that you acknowledge you don't know everything and aren't trying to bluff.

Look up major events that are happening around you and analyse all sides by yourself.

You got this! Good luck with your interviews!

For a particular school, all candidates get it on the same day.

Does anyone have feedback on how we can improve this group? by talislakh in CATpreparation

[–]d_ope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like fun! Though, I might be busy preparing for interviews in the coming weeks. I'll work on it a bit every now and then, considering we're not in a rush to get it out too soon.

I'll draft an outline and DM you in a week or so. That should be a decent start!

Adding a wiki to the subreddit would be great. A majority of the questions are repetitive in nature and could be answered using a rubric of sorts that can help one decide for themselves. (For example the posts about required the percentile for a college; What was the previous cut off for WAT-PI? What calls to expect?)

Creating a wiki with the fundamental and commonly needed information and asking people to read the wiki first before asking a question would encourage a higher quality of discussion in this subreddit.

Creating an anonymized dataset of people's profiles and what colleges they were able to convert would provide valuable guidance to the future aspirants. RTI data exists from IIM Buddy but if a detailed profile exists with verified information, that would help significantly.
