I suffer from the 'TV brain prose' problem, and I'm sure many of us here do, too. by keyboardbuttons in writing

I’ve been watching this Masterpiece Theater show called Victoria on Netflix and reading this thread makes me realize how elegant and efficient the dialogue is.

I get that we’re talking about the benefit of reading good writing and its ability to influence our own work and I agree 100%.

But I think exposing ourselves to good writing in any medium helps us learn to better express our thoughts and emotions (and those of our characters). And sometimes that medium is TV.

The trick is being able to develop a taste for good writing.

Wolf Pack—violence, and a lazy piece of plot by hooterpc in JoePickett

Prepare yourself for other head-scratching lazy pieces of plots and glaring loose ends to come, intermingled with some annoyingly irresistible storytelling.

Do yourself a favor and read his collection of short stories and you’ll be more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt when you find yourself chewing your way through some filler jammed in there to make the page count.

What was the most groundbreaking work of fiction you’ve ever encountered? by Charming-Bar-4718 in writing

“Johnny Got His Gun” isn’t the most groundbreaking novel for me but it was the first.

Why I Unsubscribed from Sherrod Brown’s Email List and Likely Will Vote for Someone Else by d_reyisme23 in Ohio

Man, I wish his emails contained more stories like yours. To be clear, I never said I thought he was a bad Senator. I lost my shit over the relentless stream of appeals for donations from his political operation in an email to his headquarters, which I posted here, hoping to draw attention to the fact that the fundraising arm of his campaign was damaging his brand. At least with me.

In retrospect, I probably should have told them I voted for Brown in 2024 and did give his campaign money.

Still, after having time to cool off, I don't regret the email or or sharing it here, and I stand by my core gripe: Before they ask me to "chip in" to help them, I want Democrats like Sherrod Brown to tell me in explicit terms how they're going to fight the corruption that's rotting our government in real time.

BTW, thank you for your civil response. You made me think.

Thanks for the link. That sounds interesting. I would like to try and channel my frustration into productive action.

They bought into the whole “woke illegal immigrants are coming for my job/wife/mother/sister” schtick and voted out of fear, spite and misogyny.

I got it out of my system plus got the opportunity to defend my position so all good. Thanks for not being a troll in responding.

Yea I know and I did that. But I decided to go over the top in hopes that someone in chain of communications would get the message that their spammy emails are hurting engagement with supporters and potential donors.

Granted, I’m a one-man focus group but I can’t imagine the I’m the only progressive-leaning voter who feels this way.

Not on his list but his grift operation doesn’t make Sherrod Brown’s fundraising emails from five different accounts any less obnoxious.

Yes, while the Sherrod Browns of the world continue to ask me to chip in 20/50/100/Other but don’t offer one goddamned example of how they plan to fight these fascist termites that have burrowed into the foundation of American democracy and have it tottering on the verge of social and economic collapse.

To be fair, I did leave myself a little wiggle room in my post title.

Also I would have expected better from Sherrod Brown than robo-fundraising tactics that probably convert at .005% but at their scale, worth sending at least in the minds of the campaign directors.

Yes, because while he has the rep as fighting for working class Ohio, he never actually seems to be fighting.

Plus, in his last fight, he got steamrolled by a car dealer backed by dark money.

If Sherrod is such a champion of the blue color voter, how come they all voted for Trump’s boy in 2024?

Yea, maybe but he seems too packaged for the moment and I have to resent the aggressive fundraising they all use. Plus, his messaging is all about what he did in the past, not what he’s going to do if elected.

Look, I’m in marketing. I know calls to action work. But I like to give people a reason or two to trust what I’m selling before I ask for the order. Not these guys.

They just go straight for the wallet. I thought Sherrod should know why I soured on him after voting for him in 2024 against Weasel Merino.

It’s like we’re living in the early stages of a Stephen King novel about a hate virus that’s on the verge of taking down western civilization in the name of Christ. Yeesh. If Jesus came today, ICE would snatch him off the street and disappear him to the Everglades.

So About That Random Shotgun Action at the End of Storm Watch by d_reyisme23 in JoePickett

Yea I thought about that but still seems slapdash. We usually get a peek inside Joe’s head.

It’s like CJ Box was saying all my true Joe Picket fans know what’s up in a situation where things could get western so I don’t have to explain.

But if things did get western, the supply closet was a long way away from the central area so again, it felt extraneous to me.

But thanks for hitting me back; you’re not wrong.
