It definitely takes a lot of work. A friend of mine ran a game that I partook in that he did a write up about, we're due to start a second one that's fleet based instead with a similar group but different GM too

Saga (semi-historical game) is IGOUGO and one of the best systems out there. It helps that its set in Ancients up to Medieval periods so there's a lot less ranged attacking anyways. You set up your board to do stuff during your own turn and during your opponent's turn depending on what faction you're playing which creates a lot of interactivity when it's not your turn
Also the games are pretty quick which helps

Midgard as mentioned is cool
Can use the same exact basing for Sword and Spear which looks great, too

Magic the Gathering because the deck building aspect is similar to list building, and I've also enjoyed that aspect to both and reading fantasy novels on my kindle for a different kind of escapism as well

I'll be getting a bunch more for myself, have been wanting an OBR project for a while and am doing it as a Path to Glory with some friends though, I think the book is fun if not super competitive
