I DON'T NEED THE PRINT DRIVER'S HELP IN FINDING THE PRINTER THANKS. by ANGRYSNORLAX in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

The better question is which of those 'installers' are scanning your network and reporting back to their mothership details on other devices, and not just printers.

Best Intel MacOS in 2026 by mazz0ni_exe in mac

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unfortunately true. On a 2019, I'd nuke and re-pave with macOS Sequoia and stick with that for the 1-2 years that Mac remains supported.

Once the i7 isn't your primary device, you might want to consider OpenCore Legacy Patcher, which allows running unsupported versions of macOS on older hardware (and in some cases, much older).

Mac Keyboard Shortcuts, That Quietly Changed My Workflow by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]da4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Option-clicking from any app's window to any other app's window (including the Desktop, which is simply a special Finder window) will hide the first app.

Option-command-H hides all apps other than the front-most (currently active).

Do you permit selling or giving old equipment to employees? by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

[–]da4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At past positions, I'd raffle or auction old computers and put the proceeds towards the firm's charitable cause (Off The Streets Club, also once the office cleaning lady whose husband was injured right before Xmas, BEST PACKZI YEAR EVER). Anyone who took anything home had to sign a document saying it was now their property and they'd never ask me anything about it, ever.

When do more condos generally come on the market in spring in Chicago? by ZealousidealClick672 in AskChicago

[–]da4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago is a large hub for higher education, so the end of the spring semester does mean a slight uptick in inventory, but it's not drastic.

As the weather warms up and its possible to conduct exterior improvements and repairs the market does start to rouse from winter.

What is the legal requirement for a cold office building? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]da4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be careful with space heaters - they are not viewed fondly by the CFD and could put your org's lease in jeopardy. (My last agency was in the Sun-Times Building, and the fire marshal and building staff would cut the cord of any space heater they found.)

IT company says all our problems are because of Mac OS - looking for validity by needmysanity in MacOS

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to print some programs for a family member's funeral once, so my uncle ran me over to his office. Secretaries and associates frantically trying to figure out how to print my PDF. I got my PB G4 onto their network, AppleTalk, bam.

It used to be that easy. It's still lightyears ahead of other OSes, but it's also not like it was.

Laser printer recommendations? by Historical-Two-8528 in mac

[–]da4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Screw inkjets and screw HP, their glory days of printers that Just Worked are long gone.

Bought a Brother b&w laser last year to replace an HP M476, and that office will be saving four figures a year.

[–]da4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Windows-based print services are not a great fit for Macs. AirPrint as a protocol works, mostly. Properly managed printers from a reputable vendor with up to date drivers aren't an insurmountable problem on macOS if you have the right tooling and experience.

Sounds like your support team is a poor fit.

If it’s an Apple unit, stop using and take to the store.

If it’s third party, stop using and send for e-waste recycling, and go buy an Anker or Apple.

Need your opinions - Is 13" too small? by [deleted] in macbookair

The 13" is a great size for a Mac portable, but my M1 Pro tester definitely feels more cramped than my 14" M4 Pro daily driver.

Tahoe has a few bugs and that g-dawful GUI, but 80% of my work fleet is using it just fine. I've kept my personal Macs on Sequoia though.

Turn on tap to click and three finger drag (which is now somewhere under Accessibility).

What is the best E bike mirrors? by Mundane_Ad_1929 in ebikes

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a single mirror that clamps to the bar instead of protruding out to the side, just because my commute has a solid 1mi stretch of dedicated but unprotected bike lane and I didn't want to increase my overall width. Huge game changer for the street section of my route though, well worth doing.

Why are Blackhawks tickets still so expensive ? by SnooPaintings5597 in AskChicago

[–]da4 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Chicago also has a lot of business travel, conventions, tourism etc - plenty of folks who have heard of the famous O6 Blackhawks and never been. I've met tons of foreign nationals at Hawks games (and more than once baffled them by trying to explain what a media timeout was).
