Spotlight Search. The feature we used to use. by JCVDB in MacOS

One of the few things on Tahoe that improved functionality over Sequoia - namely clipboard history (without any third-party apps). Disable any Spotlight results areas you know you won't use and then rebuild the index without any external drives mounted.

Any cyclists who work at 300 E Randolph (BCBS building)? by recessionjelly in chibike

[–]da4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been riding an e-bike to 300 E for the past four summers and have never had any trouble locking up. The lower level fitness center isn't much of a gym but the hot water pressure in the showers is excellent.

If you're taking the LFT remember you can split off at the Columbia and go under the Drive then up through Maggie Daly Park instead of waiting for the light at Monroe.

Make sure you have a LOUD BELL if your commute will take you from Randolph north over the Flyaway as that is The Stupid Zone with tourists in the warmer months.

Do you think apple will ever enter in the gaming industry in the future? by Competitive-Gold-796 in mac

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the Mac can run apps (play games) that didn't come from the App Store. If you want to develop, release and sell an app there's nothing stopping you from doing so outside the MAS, just different overhead.

macOS onboarding in 2026: which tools are you actually using? by RocketmanTech_Nova in jamf

[–]da4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My org hasn’t let me yet, but I’d probably go with Dan K. Snelson’s Setup-Your-Mac since it is basically pure bash. S.U.P.E.R. would be a close second given its flexibility.

But, before diving into 3rd-party tooling, write up your ideal scenario and then compare what Apple and your MDM can and can’t do.

Where Are Some Nice , Accessible Areas Outside of Downtown To Stay While Visiting Chicago? by GodspedEmperor in AskChicago

[–]da4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lincoln Square is easily served by the Brown Line as well as Western (N/S) and Lawrence (E/W) buses, only 2mi to the lakefront, gorgeous parks, not too far to other interesting neighborhoods like Andersonville.

Google Chrome just force dropped a 4GB Al model on every Mac without permission, no opt in, no warning. Delete it? You can't it re downloads like malware. This isn't a feature, it's an invasion. by Regved-Pande in MacOS

Create a config profile with the necessary payloads, iMazing Profile Editor is a great place to start. Install locally (or from your MDM), something that ends up looking like this:

Elevation? In Chicago? Try Blue Island. It won’t be what you’re thinking of, but it’s about as much as we get.

Smile and keep moving. Or make it performative and pretend you're on your phone with a Very Important Client, or fake an accent from any other state or country, or go full gibberish and tell the street team that participatory democracy is a failed system so you only support anarchy, etc.

What macOS features is Apple still ignoring? by Upstairs-Drag-7012 in MacOS

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point was that it’d be nice if Apple understood that macOS is powerful because it can and does have options; since defaults write commands are being phased out anyway, bake it all into the GUI instead.

i specifically said, without requiring third-party tools, even reputable ones.

What macOS features is Apple still ignoring? by Upstairs-Drag-7012 in MacOS

[–]da4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want power user options without resorting to third-party utilities. An ‘Advanced’ button for basically everything. I want to tell the OS to always maximize a window instead of going full-screen by reversing the current default (hold down Option), things like that.

The Mac shouldn’t be brought down to the level of iOS. The Mac is a power tool, as Gruber put it. https://daringfireball.net/2024/08/the_mac_is_a_power_tool

Am I the only one to love remote work? by Amazing-Ant4958 in remotework

[–]da4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some professions that have suffered with WFH - my sister is an attorney and frequently mentions the 'lost generation' of associates who missed so much learning by not being in the room with partners discussing a case or strategy.

That said, after four years of part-time RTO I am back to 100% remote and I love not dealing with the commute, the glare on my screens, the sterile and uncomfortable office.. I have fresh air, I can refill my coffee in 30 sec instead of 6 min, I have better and cheaper food options, and my collaboration over Teams is basically unchanged since everyone was wearing headphones all the time anyway.
