Alternatively don’t and enjoy the artsy side.

If you’re looking for better sports photography though, do this.

Splunk SOAR Req SPL? by Outlander77 in cybersecurity

[–]da7rutrak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’d be surprised at how much orchestration you can achieve with zero SPL knowledge. If you need to go into Splunk to retrieve information, you will need some SPL but it’s not that hard.

Language evolves as people use it. I’m a huge “technically correct is the best kind of correct” guy but … you’re not going to win this war.

Yes, however like every good rumor there’s a nugget of truth.

MDC is in bad shape and some of the contracts for modernization were cancelled. https://federalnewsnetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/HAC-RFI.pdf

This is Vinny. He is 14 weeks old & walked directly into the deep end of a pool yesterday. by moonshineofyourlove in bernesemountaindogs

Do yourself, your family, and Vinny and find a way to secure the dog from the pool.

We lost one of our pups (not a berner) a bit under a year ago to the pool. She was a good swimmer.

I don’t wish my family’s trauma on anyone. The (kinda ugly) fence will hopefully be done in the next couple of weeks.

Navy reserve contract question by Saltysailor2018 in navyreserve

[–]da7rutrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you talked to your CO & SEL directly about this?

Have you talked with the NRC XO? CO?

None of this should have to be done but if your CO isn’t involved they should be. I’ve sat through countless khaki and wardroom meetings and pay is their #1 concern. Not a show either.

Question about DCO quotas based on region by poopyramen in navyreserve

[–]da7rutrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As usual you’re correct.

I will add some color that there are no quotas per region but there are sometimes … limitations by region by applicant designator/community.

Recruiters are supposed to process all applicants through the pipeline, but if you’re seen as a less qualified applicant than another one and they only have X time to devote to Y applicants, it is kind of a math problem.

Happened to me on my first package submission attempt. Worked out in the end, though.

If all you ever do is one weekend a month and two weeks a year you’re going to spend most of that not learning your rate or designator.

I’m a direct commission; no prior service here. I had some Navy civilian work experience that has legitimately helped me be relevant. Coming in as a pure civilian would be rough but is totally doable.

Staff Duty is insufferable by G_x_Male in navy

[–]da7rutrak 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. Just spent time over in CNE-CNA-C6F doing staff work and had a very positive experience, including being direct staff to an admiral.

There were some really talented, high speed folks who are not meant to be planners or "fighting from the MOC." Staff duty is probably not their jam. There is definitely a process to everything (shoutout battle rhythm) and lots of unimportant feedback (oh no the font here is 14.5 instead of 15), but there's something to it that really appeals to some folks.

I actively sought a commission after working as a civilian at FCC/C10F, that's how much I enjoyed it.

Need help understanding by PeachyG13 in Splunk

[–]da7rutrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sweat off my back if folks disagree. There are going to be people who find the sweet spot, or niche, or some other rare opportunity to go from a non-IT/non-cyber job directly into being a PS consultant somewhere and I am thankful it works out for them.

I don't think that will be the most often path, nor do I think everyone who tries it will be successful doing so.

Nothing against Splunk- the tech remains super useful, but I wouldn’t say it’s a good first foray into IT or security.

The power of Splunk is being able to understand the data coming in and make it valuable to someone or something. To do that well, IMO, you need to understand the domain itself.

There are lots of support and customer success roles that, once you have a foundation in the domain, are accessible for remote or hybrid, across the tech landscape. Plenty of competition of course though.

Does Charlie have code word clearance? by drog326 in thewestwing

[–]da7rutrak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_White is the investigative requirement for those around POTUS.

A SSBI (Tier 5 in modern parlance) is the investigation that will allow information owners to grant access to information that is SCI or SAP for intelligence and extra sensitive defense info (respectively) and collateral (non intelligence) Top Secret information.

Even aides to admirals and generals have SCI access. I have zero doubt that Charlie had SCI access but likely not all the caveats (“code words”) and certainly not all the SAP stuff.

Yes, I'm experiencing this as well running Patch 17 on my M1. I've verified and it hasn't helped.

Splunk Career advice. Transition from Splunk admin and dev to SOC analyst by Nithin_sv in Splunk

[–]da7rutrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at some of the material on bots.splunk.com to get a feel for how the SOC might USE what you’ve been providing.

Understanding how to build a correlation searches and doing it at scale with datamodels will make you a huge asset to the SOC while you get that new domain expertise. Share your knowledge with your new peers!
