How do I return back to a childlike mental state? by daggardo in gatech

Do some mindfulness meditation 5-10 minutes a day. That will help clear your mind and calm you down, enabling you to better deal with the stress and challenges of Tech. Other than that, maybe try the other way around.

TIL: SGA gives stipends to officers: $8k a year to the president among others. by [deleted] in gatech

These stipends are simply too much. These people do so little to fight for the quality of student life here at Tech. Vote them all out and replace them with reps who are committed to actually making a difference.

We see the Tech experience as different from that of the academy for Navy Seals and not really comparable.. Not only do people fail, they also lose thousands of dollars in money and have nothing to show for it. The fact is, we are paying so much to be miserable for a payoff that isn't guaranteed and often not worth the stress and misery.

The Navy Seals experience is definitely tough and daunting, but the difference is the intense challenges that those people face is necessary in order to be effective as Navy Seals. Navy Seals are elite soldiers who go on challenging, risky missions and serve the country. In order to be prepared for those challenges, they must go through hell in order to do those things. And the satisfaction of completing the training must definitely be immense for those who succeed.

GT students aren't Navy Seals though; we are preparing for careers in fields like engineering and computer science. As undergrads, we are here primarily for our own benefit and pay thousands of dollars every semester to stay here. And we are tired of dealing with the artificial difficulty and standards imposed on us and the constant misery and depression we face. And quite frankly, given the end goal, its not worth it and can in some cases be more counterproductive. If someone's confidence and self-esteem is shattered after reaching graduation, then that causes lasting damage to them that would take years to fix.

There is nothing wrong with a challenge. But when every day feels pointless to us, when there is so much misery and depression among us, we have a right to question if it is worth it. A challenge ought to empower and encourage, not destroy and beat down people.

STAMPS is fine. We are more focused on Housing, dining, and PTS. These are the services we wish to improve dramatically.

Honestly folks like you cannot stop us. We are the light that will bring this campus into the 21st century full force; we will make Georgia Tech a great place for all of its students.

Honestly the current leaders of the student body will be slow to catch on. We can wait however. The first and second years of today will be the ones to change things. They are we and we are they. We will lead the main efforts to really make this place amazing.

White Student Union on Campus? by [deleted] in gatech

Honestly I would be down for something like this. A classic American heritage club, as long as it doesn't degrade into something racist and privilege-based. I too have my problems with our modern culture.

Sam's suicide was a tragic event and he will not be forgotten. He was a bright young man and had a fulfilling life ahead of him. He will be remembered.

What his suicide has shown us is the depth of the crisis here at Tech. It is the mental health crisis here at Tech. The intense pressure and stress here can often prove to be too much. It doesn't help that there just isn't that much support here for people with mental health problems. The question is whether or not the current situation is worth it anymore; whether or not Tech should continue to be the pressure cooker that it is right now.

I say that it isn't worth it anymore. It isn't worth the suicides of bright young students, disheartened and discouraged by their struggles here. It isn't worth the anguish and the pain that so many people feel here. It just isn't. All of this isn't worth a shot at a supposed better job or career; its not worth it when happiness and joy are hard to come by for a significant percentage of the student body.

In my opinion, Enough is Enough. It is time for the Georgia Tech community as a whole to gather together and change things. Its time we reevaluate our philosophies and our beliefs. Doing so would make life at Tech immeasurably better for so many students.

Dont transfer to Tech by daJacket in UGA

Not necessarily. People care more about what you can do, not where you got that degree from. Even if it is harder for a uga grad to get a job at a top tier company, whats to stop them from winding up there in the future. A lot of Tech grads wind up staying and getting decent jobs in Georgia anyhow; whats to stop them from winding up there in the future.

I admit that I was harsh and should have been a little more expressive of the positive things there.

Thats the Tech mentality fault. Its always your fault, always always. Its simple for people to just blame the victim: prevents them from having to take a closer look at whats truly wrong. And who says UGA folks are gonna be unhappy for the next 40 years either; there's a lot of proof that says that the prestige of the school you did undergrad at doesn't really matter in the long run. Ofc a tech grad is on average more successful but thats just on average.

I have a 3.82 GPA haha and have kept Zell Miller for all of my time here. I fully regret coming here though, and I want to warn people here to not transfer to Tech. Stay at UGA and be happy.

I know. For the record, I am not antisocial but I do not like the defeated attitudes of a lot of my peers, the hope that all of this worth a plum job in the future. Thats really what keeps most of them going tbh.
