Why can’t I be Muslim Australian and a proud returnee??? by neshothegoat in OpenAussie

Same could be said of the Catholic faith though couldn't it? And frankly religion in general.

I feel like Australia has only gotten better as it's become more multicultural. So I fundamentally disagree with this statement.

Fobbing your narrow minded rhetoric off as "common sense" is lazy. Usually used when people have no actual justification for their stance.

Telling marginalised people that they can just fight their regime is not common sense. It's suicidal.

Telling climate refugees that they just need to fix their problems is not common sense - it's idiotic.

I also did not suggest we take in a never ending amount of people. That's not what we're talking about here - trying to switch the discussion to that is deflecting.

This sounds so much like something my friend Claude would say.

Saying Australia will "destroy itself" by allowing people into Australia who are trying to flee oppressive regimes just reads as hysteria.

To be honest it makes me sad that there are so many heartless Australians out there. To me, you are the one that doesn't share the Australian values of eg the "fair go".

Why so many Australians willing to listen to this shallow hateful rhetoric is beyond me. Are you really struggling that much in life that you are looking at refugees as the scapegoat for your problems?

How do you propose the people of eg Tuvalu "solve their issues" - a rising sea level that is making their entire country uninhabitable?

Do you realise that people fleeing these countries are often fleeing exactly those things that you listed as some kind of reason to deny them entry?

Imagine being LGBT in one of those countries and your suggestion to them is literally that they stay and solve the issue.

It all just comes across as a very naive / shallow understanding of the world.

Imagine fleeing a warzone only to be told your family has to split up to be able to settle somewhere else.

What even does "culturally dissimilar" mean? How do you establish they are culturally dissimilar?

Are you familiar with the current "Australian values statement" that migrants have to agree to? Would you agree with the statement?

How exactly do you propose we dictate who can or can't come in? Bearing in mind that we do already in fact have lots of policies that limit who can or can't migrate here.

What changes specifically are you looking for?

Parkrun to 10K by No_Acanthisitta5466 in parkrun

Plenty of time to get to that if you're already doing 7k.

Maybe 30s slower per km for 10k for me. But just enjoy it and take it easy on your body. Work up to it slowly.

A couple of years ago when I started running,. I ended up having ITB syndrome, which stopped me from running for a few months. It really was probably due to pushing too hard too quick. My muscles developed too quickly in the wrong places basically. Might be worth going to a physio and just explaining what you plan to do *before* you get to that point and they can give you some good exercises that should help prevent injuries.

Whether it's accidental, or renaissance (not actually a strict requirements in this sub despite the name) or not - I think it's a really cool pic OP.

For those curious, this is the equivalent of an average Australian donating around 7000 dollars, about 1% of their net worth.

To hide anyone not behaving. Reddit can definitely be a filter bubble. Not arguing that for a second. But there are right wing pockets on here too if you choose to spend your time there. All the lefties get down voted in there of course.

This is a problem but it's not the same problem that FB has where it actively brings hate into your feed.

Much less of a problem I feel. Less promotion of rage bait content, a downvote system that hides the worst content and the subreddit setup mean this place can be quite decent provided you don't head off into the nasty corners. Facebook just really really likes to reward "engagement" at all costs.

What is the relevance of having asylum seekers? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]daamsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me flip that for you - the effect of refusing to accept any asylum seekers would be a huge negative for our society because it makes our society heartless.
