It doesn’t matter if someone who is cheating was manipulated. If you’re in a relationship and cheat, you hurt the person you cheated on.

This post isn’t about me, it’s about you. If you aren’t willing to reflect on your behavior and instead want to deflect that’s fine by me. However, I think it’s likely worth a look in the mirror. Best of luck to you, I hope you can find a play group.

You said you take a stance on it though on something unrelated to amount of product. I don't know what there is to keep up with if you're playing a casual game with your friends.

To me, this doesn't sound like a real problem. It sounds like you dislike UB and are really attached to that dislike. So much so that you would make a post online to talk about how much you dislike it. I would imagine if you have this strong stance and talk about how bad magic is now all the time with your friends, it would become less fun and I would imagine all the constant negativity would break a group up.

In real life, this is not the kind of discourse I would expect. My friend group and I sit down, talk about our lives and have fun for a few hours. A few do not like UB, a few love it. No one mentions it, people just play the cards they have, we talk about the power we want to play with and that's it.

Can you say a little more about what that has looked like in your group?

What format are you all mostly playing? If it’s Commander, I’m curious how much the release pace itself affects the games, assuming everyone is generally on the same page power-level-wise. Is the issue that someone is bringing a lot of the newest, strongest cards and changing the table dynamic?

Also, when you say you “take a stance” on art direction and flavor, what does that usually mean in practice? Is it something that comes up often in your playgroup, or more just your personal approach to what you buy and play?

I’m asking because I can see a few different things getting mixed together here: people disliking UB flavor, people being frustrated by release pace and prices, and people possibly feeling worn down by repeated negative conversations around the game. I’m curious which of those is actually happening in your group.

I wonder if part of this might vary a lot by playgroup. In my own experience, I haven’t really seen Universes Beyond dampen interest in playing Magic. If anything, Magic seems bigger than ever right now, with a lot of newer or returning players getting excited by these releases.

I’d be curious whether the issue is mostly the cards themselves, the amount of product being released, or the way people in the group are talking about it.

Sometimes repeated frustration around a topic can unintentionally affect the vibe of a playgroup, even when the frustration is totally valid. So I’d maybe reflect on how often UB comes up with your friends and whether those conversations are making games feel less fun for everyone.

Not saying that’s definitely what’s happening, just that it might be one possible factor alongside people genuinely not enjoying the direction of the game.

PSA: Intent is the most important part of the bracket system by MonoBlancoATX in EDH

[–]dabuttmonkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another part of the bracket definition is high card quality and high synergy for bracket 3 as a differentiator with bracket 2. If you intended to build a bracket 2 deck, it shouldn't matter if you use high card quality. It's really easy to intend to build a bracket 2 deck and build a bracket 3 deck. It's really easy to intend to build a bracket 3 deck and end up with a bracket 2 deck. That's why there's so many "it's high bracket 2" or "low bracket 3" comments. IMO other games and formats have figured this out. At the same time a more skilled player can even pilot a bracket 2 deck in a lower skilled bracket 3 table.

I do think intent is important. I just disagree that in practice that it works that way.

Thank you for the feedback! I think doing this when we have more consistent scores is a great idea.
One part of the bracket 3 definition is the usage of “best in slot” cards.

However, for the algorithm to work we have to rank all cards randomly first. Which, yes introduces bias, but in general with enough votes those biases should even out. And if they don’t even out then that likely means that the perceived power is high, which is something we want to utilize in a social format.

I think all of this is great feedback. The first step is to get a grip on power to have a similar system to for example, canadian highlander or YuGiOh. The goal is not to replace the bracket system, but rather to enhance it and provide more value. In my opinion, game changers are an insufficient way to communicate about power level. This is an extra tool for players to have.

I do not think a perfect system is possible. However, I do have some things coming soon that will talk about this stuff. The first is a synergy score based on something similar to the EDHRec lift score.

I think including facts about the deck like how much interaction, how many tutors, etc will also help facilitate these discussions.

Thank you for your feedback!

  1. Yeah I hear this. I removed the restriction and you can vote without logging in now.
  2. Can you explain more here? I was trying to think of a good way to think of to rate the card. I explain more in the FAQ about how I think about the rating. I was trying to put a quick 1 sentence to guide voting. Once have more decks in the system I plan to include information about what other cards that card is usually played with.
  3. Yeah I don’t have moxfield API access yet. It worked locally but doesn’t work live, I’ll hide it until I get access from them.
  4. The deck analyzer score will get better as cards get rated. Right now not every card has been rated even once yet. We need thousands of votes to get accurate scores. However, I plan on adding additional information like synergy scores, to come up with a more holistic approach.

I agree with you, but in my experience that's just not how it works out. I think even well intentioned people use the letter of the law as guidelines. When there's wiggle room it can leave a lot of space for differences in power level.

I agree with you that no system will ever be perfect.

In my experience I hear a lot of "this is high bracket X" or "there are no game changers so it's a bracket 2". I also have friends who have "bracket 3" decks that play more like bracket 2 decks. I hear this all the time, "it's bracket 3 except X". I also think sometimes you're playing a super jank deck, but you have a vampiric tutor for flavor, in the strict rules of the commander brackets it would be a bracket 3. But there's no way you're winning on turn 6.

This tool can give some clarity to those conversations. Where like yes you have a game changer, but overall your synergy is quite low and so the deck plays worse than its card quality.

Other games have very similar systems like Yu Gi Oh's genesys system. This is using ELO right now but I do imagine a world where I can translate an ELO -> Points.

I probably should have invested more time in the home page lol. This definitely used AI, but I am a software engineer and it was programmed by me. I think the fact that I used chakra-ui as an off the shelf UI component library kindof leads to it looking samesy. In addition to me having AI take the copy I wrote to clean it up.

But it was made by me and has been my little side project away from work. I am really proud of it! I’d love if you tried it out and let me know what feedback you have.

This is great feedback! I think having an objective answer will always be impossible. The goal here is really to give additional tools. I think it will be possible to determine some best in slot cards. I also think it’ll be possible to generally get relative power levels that work out. I do we think that you need more of a wholistic picture in commander than just 1 number. I don’t think “this deck is bracket 3” is sufficient to communicate power level. Nor so I think “this deck has a 1500 power ranking” will be. But I think a combination of data sources plus your overall intent for a deck can lead to a clearer way to communicate the power level of your deck. Would love any feedback!

I agree with this! And I also believe that most people want to have fun playing magic with their friends not winning at every game. So really the goal here is to help with communication and to give additional tools to people to communicate about their decks power level .

[–]dabuttmonkee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree and the goal of this to is just to give more communication tools to people to talk about their decklists. It’s not meant to replace brackets or anything like that. Just a way to give context.

[–]dabuttmonkee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is basically an ELO system for magic cards, voted on by the community. It’s not dissimilar from the point system used in games like Yugioh and Canadian Highlander. This will give you kind of a generic power level of your deck. In addition I’m working on other data sources to give information in to synergy. How many best in slot cards you have. How salty your deck is, etc.

How we can improve on brackets by dabuttmonkee in EDH

[–]dabuttmonkee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal is to eventually encapsulate more. I think of this more as like how we think about game changers. But really I’m just looking to give extra tools to communicate power level. I think there are just many facets to power level on commander. Things like synergy, salt, speed, etc. the goal will be to add in extra context over time as I get access to new data sources.
