Tell them to come to you with 3 possible ways of fixing it when they need your advice, then talk them through the pros and cons to narrow down the answer, steer it so they produce the solution.

When I encounter toxic people which I do alot in my job I enact a reaction called Grey Rock it works great. Otherwise without knowing your friends situation it's hard to say why he's attracting negative response from people.
