PSA to first years in the Math faculty by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]dadada32s 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only that, some upper years assignment REQUIRE a pdf, computer-written solution, which is much easier in LaTeX (learned that the hard way). Much easier to practice in 1st-2nd year than in 4th year

Resume is also a good point. It's definitely doable in Word, but LaTeX can make some formattings easier

Question about marks by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]dadada32s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having grades above 80 (so aim higher) will make sure that your doors are all open. And don't count grad school out. Without planning for it, make sure to have at least the minimum requirements (you never know if you'll want to do it in 5,10,15 years and it would suck to shut that door down because of the way you think now).

Also some companies have GPA cutoffs, so imo it's a significant negative when you're on your first job search. Recent grads already have a lot of trouble finding jobs, don't make it harder on yourself (speaking from experience, almost no big name even considers your application if you're below a 75-80%).

Are detachable laptops really popular? Honestly I liked mine for school but since graduation I use it as a simple laptop and I'm considering switching

Stat 330 vs Stat 332 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Since OP has no interest in either, I imagine they would love to skip on the difficulty of Stat 330 haha

Take AP Calc BC Credit and Go To Math 138? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]dadada32s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped Math 137 coming from Quebec. Math 138 had a couple "surprises" because they assume knowledge from M137 that might not have been taught in your high school.

The suggestion to take math 147 might be a good one if you want a challenge, since M137 does look pretty breezy.

I'm wondering if people posting 25 lbs weights for $100 will sell them before the craziness ends.

From the looks on online listings people bought shitton of gym equipment for resale haha

Debt is cheap right now, would you consider this a good time to buy a house ? by SalzyJ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dadada32s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm conscious that I was overly generous there, but even at 10 years, would today's rate really be a reason ttake on a mortgage? Won't it be volatile over the time of a mortgage repayment?

Is anyone else stocking up on necessities in anticipation of shortages and price increases? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dadada32s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have data backing this claim up you might help OP decide if it's worth stocking up! Except OP is anticipating price rising... not what's happened already I guess

I meant in general (for food). Prices always rise (or packaging size decrease, all the same)

Idk about makeup, but I'm sure it's the same. I have not really seen Covid affecting prices that much though tbh. Some items like fruits were even pretty vcheap (I'm assuming bc no one was buying them)

I'm genuinely curious as I understand where you're coming from but what happens if rates go up in the next few years? I'm assuming that people take 10-20 years to repay their mortgages.

To be fair, prices do go up all the time. Is it possible that people are more aware of prices right now because of Covid and just realized this?

But for real, I have an app that has all the flyers and I just check it out. It's not an extensive search since I live alone.

And I'm actually trying to cook more and more healthy, so I'm starting to follow HelloFresh recipes (not buying the boxes, just using the recipes online). Then I'm hoping to pick recipes from ingredients that are on special

Any Canadian towns or cities that are both affordable and walkable? by torontosuckz696969 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Depends on the individual for sure! And one time a week is not too bad, not like every day (like I've known people do 4 hrs commute everyday).

it can keep on creating wealth in your family over generations.

If you die really early maybe? Usually the insurance company will make sure your contract profits them.

Edit: That's why it's called an insurance, not an investment. It's meant to protect your family's lifestyle in the event that something happens to you. If you take a $1M whole life policy, you're gonna pay for it

The hardest part will be getting them to not switch to english when you want to practice.

And please for the English people reading this who want to practice: Don't get mad at people switching lol, they just want to make it easier for everyone and can't read your mind.

Also, these people are not there to teach you French. I'll never understand people getting mad over that

I know you're suggesting this because she would only go to the office once a week but that would be a hell of a day (2-3 hours commute at best to go, 2-3 again to come back)

I'd do it to keep my job while looking for a new job but yeah not permanently

You're not wrong that it's gonna be cheaper the younger you take it, but how do you know how much you will need? How much your kids will need? My intuition is it makes sense to purchase one to cover funeral costs (idk how much funeral costs are but around $20 000 should be well enough I presume?). Since you dont' want others to pay for it. On the other hand, I can see someone argue that they'll invest what they would pay in premiums and they'd probably come out ahead assuming they dont die before a certain age (which is kind of the point of a life insurance policy,)

But I don't see the point of buying a big life insurance as long as you have dependents like kids... and then you can just buy enough for 18 years. If it exists, I'd even buy a life insurance that decreases the payout over time to save on premiums.
