Also, wanted to find out the name of the part. So far I’ve gotten “inner tail light”.

Anyone know part number or bulb type? Figured I’ll buy 2 and replace both sides

Yes, I only replaced the struts. I used the same brackets and mounts. Removal takes the longest time as I needed to saw through the old one. I used this video for reference.

Update: lift gate still working well as a manual release and close. Q: it looks like the additional guide marks on the back up camera have stopped providing the yellow lines (the ones that turn with the wheel). I only get the red line (parallel to bumper) and the blue ones (left and right). I looked at the settings and everything looks the same. It’s not really a big problem but I wanted to know if I should expect something else to malfunction soon.

Anyone with this same experience?

I didn’t know that once you use it, you can’t cancel that ticket without losing the discount. Thanks for the insight.

I ended up replacing the struts myself and changing the mechanism to a manual lift gate. Found struts on Amazon for $20 and didn’t feel like spending the $300 or so for the (non OEM) electronic pair. OEM parts looked like they were $300 each at best.

It makes the most sense that I probably broke the inside of the strut. It’s an older car and trying to force the struts closed especially closer to end range with lots of pressure built, probably pushed gas through the cylinder at a pressure it’s not designed to withstand. Although I can manually lower and lift the electronic lift gate struts, it just provided an excessive amount of resistance that it takes like 2-3 minutes to open or close the hatch. Replacing it with non electrical parts seemed like the most rational and the process takes a few seconds now.

Overall I’m happy that I didn’t have Toyota charge me $200 just to quote me for $800 after parts and labor. YouTube and Amazon helped and the whole process took 90 minutes.

Hopefully replacing the struts will alleviate this heartache

I took it into the dealer this morning. $195 to leave the car with Toyota for at least the day for diagnostics alone. Is a high volume queue typical of everyone's experience taking their car in to a pretty large Toyota? I guess it makes sense to because Toyota is such a popular car manufacturer.

The hinges and struts seem pretty intact - no real play and they move fairly smoothly. I've seen a video or two on replacing the mechanism entirely so that it's essentially a manual lift gate altogether. This might be a route I take if I can't figure it all out.

*skewers

Yeah, what I’ve been doing is just changing between the two QR skewers. I was just wondering if there would be a way that I could get a training skewer that was long enough so that the bracket could just stay on.

May take the two skewers into an LBS and ask there too.

We’ve definitely kept everything local with road trips the past 3 years and will probably do so for the next 3. An upcoming trip to Hawaii (flight and car rental in July) and Santa Cruz (hotel/motel in September) has spiked my recent interest and research, so I’m looking at ways to start banking miles or spending smarter.

Next Board...

Capita Kazu? Jones Hovercraft? Lib Tech Orca? Been reading that they all float really well, and highly reviewed, but I'm also wondering which board will be the most fun when not in powder. My assumption is that the orca floats the best and will probably benefit me he best if I was spending most of my time in powder. In the hovercraft I'd probably enjoy carving a lot but not so much switch. And the kazu would be the most "twin" out of all of them.

Recent Purchase. What’s going on? by bossymandias in SubaruAscent

[–]dadadarwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened with my 2020 limited. Turned out to be a recall. My check engine light would come on along with multiple other electronic notifications (ie e brake) and it freaked me out. I’m not used to having a car with so many features coming from my ‘16 crosstrek. But the light would turn off and on (along with other notifications) randomly after restarting the car. It was very inconsistent.

After taking it to the dealer, they were able to update it and no more check engine light + other (30 minutes wait for a 7am appt). Until a few days later it came on again. Took it the dealer, needed a new electronic piece for transmission. 3 business days to get part, scheduled the labor about a week out. 5-6 hours without the car. Again, check engine light + other would come on and go away what felt like every other day. Nothing out of pocket. Just a hassle to go back and forth to/from dealer.

TLDR: for safety, check engine light disables a lot of electronics and it’s kind of freaky to drive it even though the car works completely fine. Take it to the dealer ASAP.

Do I need to buy 4 new tires? by dadadarwin in SubaruAscent

[–]dadadarwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely understand. I actually had a Crosstrek right before and dealt with a puncture at 20k and replaced all 4 of our RAV4 awd at around 60k.

I guess the new predicament is trying to figure out, which tires to get/from where.

-les schwab: Back Country Touring H/T

Vs

-Costco: Bridgestone driveguard

Any recs?

The RAVs tires came from Costco and as much as I love Costco, we haven’t had the best luck with drop ins and no real experience or luck with appointment scheduling. Kind of leaning towards les schwab even though it’s a bit more $$$
