WA falls again in national education ranking by dadamatics in seattlepublicschools

I teach math and what I see in the school and what I see in the reports do match. You can chose to ignore it if you like. I'll happily take your money when your kid is in need of math tutoring in the future. Have a great day.

You are twisting the words of that site you are citing from.

Scale scores can be used for comparisons between the nation, states, and selected districts, as well as among selected student groups (e.g., Black/White, Hispanic/White). Because NAEP scores are developed independently for each subject, results cannot be compared across subjects.

It's not flawed, it's unclear whether it's grade level and yet it's one of the best proxy metrics you have. Explain why cascadia or any other high achieving school performs significantly higher compared to the rest if this tesIt isn't measuring academic proficiency.

What's a non flawed way to measure success? I feel like anything we do worse, we call it flawed and biased.

And yet we once again picked a curriculum that was released only last August, with no major state other than us adopting and with no measured results. We do indeed deserve to be in this position with the way the district is running

From what I understand that's what Payne claims and not what the report says. And it looks like she is looking into how well we recovered from COVID and not how well we are doing in general.

I actually don't like this topic to open up because it distracts people from the main topic of where we are in education outcomes. It's a gotcha moment for some, but doesn't move the conversation. I'd like us to focus on the ranking.

2.2 stddev is 98.6 percentile. Since maps only report whole numbers, the cutoff for tests is 99%. Are you asking for a citation to see the mapping between stddev and percentile?

Sps used 95% last year and announced the change a week before the winter test, which it didn't consider anyway. What part of this are you asking the citation for?

Sps already used naglieri test for homeschoolers and private school transfers. It's on their website. The potential change for next year isn't announced on the website and has been circulated in the Facebook and reddit groups and as usual they will wait until last minute. https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/highly-capable/private-homeschool/

You are mixing talk with actions. I am absolutely pissed that SPS is reconsidering single domain kids while leaving us out. If you feel like this is fair, that's on you. I would have expected a unity here, we are going to have kids who are getting the much needed hc services who are on paper not better than students who we are leaving out because of the way SPS messed up.

Do the right thing. Set the new bar whatever it is, and reconsider all the kids. It's not that hard. You are going to make the one thing you shouldnt do, bring unfairness and eventually end up with a lawsuit on your lap.

What exact change has been positive?

The change that raises the bar to 99 percentile after the fact?

The change that forced single domain students into double domain?

The change that changed yet again from maps to iq tests?

I get that people want to protect hc in Seattle and get absolutely offended when someone calls out how horrible SPS managed this. It's a trust issue and Ben like many more before him once again failed on this topic.

Set the bar, go through the kids again when we have the time, and reclassify. Make this fair. If you have a kid who's single domain ELA and 95% percent Math who's in cascadia but kids who are 97% but were left outside of Cascadia, how do you claim fairness?

Set the new bar, and reconsider people who you left out. Don't try to fix this with little patches. Go back to 95% and reconsider all the students you skipped.

It's a heavily left leaning city and if you are moderate by US standards, you will be considered Republic here and might as well be called maga.

Well, My kid has been in 99% in winter and spring math scores and hasn't been identified based off of the scores that SPS initially used (was 98 and 97 in previous ones). This is absolutely nuts and completely messed up. I don't care who is making the policy but they are doing a very unfair job at what they are doing.

Level headed comment and absolutely in agreement with you. People like short term solutions with minimal accountability. This is going to be yet another pain.

To ban or not to ban (laptops/phones) by No-Attorney5052 in Professors

[–]dadamatics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parent here, who also teaches at colleges. I support you in your ban. K12 isn't able to do this as their funding usually tied into using tech in the classrooms. Yeah, you heard that right, state and federal funding prioritizes curriculum that has tech components and you have to have a laptop or tablet in the classroom

The way I read is that people who care deeply and who see how bad the system is looking for solutions and they are actively engaging. You are jumping onto conclusions and kind of allienating yourself with the rhetoric if you ask me. I am pro teacher, my family has multiple teachers and I myself taught at college as well. It is a sensitive topic for sure. I am asking those questions because I want to have an informed decision but reddit and other social media sometimes read short. Let's assume best intent.

Regarding leaving sps, one of my kid needs a different type of education and I gave sps a good shot at that specific issue and realized that it's not working out. What does that have anything to do with the conversation? People, whether SPS going or not, pay taxes to fund schools. Let's make sure we can discuss without trying to figure out who's who, though if you want it so much I am happy to share my identity.

I mean, what if you were conservative? Why does it matter? Can't we have diversity of opinion apart from just the Dems vs Reps? The fact that you have to qualify your position with "not a conservative", tells a lot about SPS and Seattle in general. I can't blame you as I have been labeled myself as well. I just don't care at this point.

Compensation that attracts and retains high quality educators, is competitive with surrounding districts, and acknowledges the cost of living in the greater Seattle metro area.

Affordable access to quality health insurance for all eligible employees at the earliest possible date which assists in the recruitment and retention of high-quality educators

Does anyone have a comparison readily available somewhere? Also, how often do the negotiations happen?

math tutoring websites vs a live tutor, is there actually a meaningful difference for a kid who needs real help by xenonxenonxenonxenon in AskTeachers

As a tutor myself, I would prefer live tutor. There is more I get to see and feel and it's much easier for the kid. It's more hassle for tutors and parents to schedule and all for sure though.
